  • not great pity he had to avoid the high notes its those high notes that make this an amazing song

  • This is pure shite, Liam and Tommy are tossing and turning in their graves! Greetings from Finland

  • I like Bryan Ferry's other stuff but he should leave this one alone, he hasn't captured the 'essence' and meaning of this at all. Sorry Mr Ferry

  • magic...seen him sing that live at Liverpool Empire...CASANOVA,IS THAT YOUR NAME..OR DO YOU LIVE THERE...omg...i'm drunk now come all ye young men..and lay me down..rock n roll..xx

  • like this alot his voice just clicks with the lyrics

  • I come from Carrick and it's a KIP

  • No one is beating the legend that is McCann singing this song. I've got nothing against Ferry at all but thats just the way it is

  • Great great song, very beautiful Irish melody.

Brings tears to your eyes if you're Irish, hey even if you're English.

    Fabulous song. !

  • van morrison and the chieftans are the best.

  • personally, this is my favorite version, the harp tops it off for me, such a great sounding mix with the acoustic guitar.

  • no-one can beat Charlotte Church on this one, sorry.

  • @LadyGmarilyn Loudon Wainwright III. Sorry.

  • @LadyGmarilyn the dubliners sorry best version by a long long long way jim mcann is powerfull

  • Didn’t like this at first but the more I listen to it the more I like it, I think you have to forget the other versions of it and remember this is Bryan Ferry’s style and if he can change a traditional song like this and sing it in his own style then total respect to the man.

  • Love the guy, but Bryan is way overreaching here. Give me Paddy Reilly or Liam Clancy.

  • What a beautiful song. It really doesn't matter who's playing it. So good to hear.

  • sorry bryan, much as i love your singing, youve got it all wrong with this song. as eric clapton once said, there are certain songs that are so perfect like for instance, danny boy that you dare not mess about with. like irish comeallyes such as this one which were passed down through the ages from ancient fireplaces.

  • I like Mr Ferry but this is really shite. If you want to hear the best version listen to Jim McCann

  • Like an elephant trying to tap-dance.

  • Total shite.

  • I think he did a fine job...I have not heard this song performed the same way twice...nor the lyrics the same way twice. And most of them are excellent...different...interpretations. I enjoyed this very much. The END of this video was quite...interesting.

  • Carrickfergus is a town just North of Belfast Northern Ireland.

  • Outstanding. He truly is a master.

  • fucking amazing ...as john peel used to say...you can't beat that with a stick....just cried my eyes out....love lennydylan.....think i'll play jealous guy...just to make me sadder....then morrisey

  • Yo, where is Van?

  • whats all this st pattys day shite ,ITS ST PATRICKS DAY OR ST PADDYS DAY NOT ST PATTYS DAY

  • Julia is all you need to see here. HAPPY ST.PATTY'S DAY!!!

  • van morrison has the best version!! what a voice!!! he can do anything!!! this guy sux out loud!!!

  • Superb. Many thanks for posting. Truly enjoyed it.

  • I like the fact it's on a real stage and he is performing live. The musicians are real and the talent is obvious. There are other skills offered by other talents, but here on Youtube this is it. I am just sorry that all the solid versions are not available to see.

    " only 4 nights " - only for nights

" to carry me " - ferry me..

    " i did support her " - i would support her..

Watch the START very closely..WHERE did his GUITAR ..go to...??/

  • whats going on mate, i love brian ferry but you have just ruined one of the greatest irish folk tunes ever, stick to what you best at brian..

  • Thank you Brian, and heyLETS Hear it for Julia Thornton on the harp !!! WoooooHooooo- AhWoooo AHwooooo Hoot Hoo Hot

  • this guys sucks

all he's doing is butchering the song

  • Barry Wordsworth.... FIND THIS GUY.... HE KNOWS HIS STUFF... STRONG.... ENERGY ... VALID!

  • Brian Ferry is no faggot-I live in the town and whilst this is far from my favourite version of this beautiful song,it is nonetheless sung with a great deal of passion by someone whose name will be around long after Paddy Reilly and Jim McCann are no longer with us

  • Well Im Argentinean and I prefer Paddy Reilly,

Hands down, this guy is to weak for such strong song.

se necesita una voz mas de hombre ,para esta cancion.

but he may like this part"If I could find me a handsome boatman":-)

  • He sings this better than any Irish man I've heard....and I'm Irish....sorry boys but it's true.

  • I don't beleive your Irish:) seriously though you don't beleive this is better than Jim McCann's version?, Jim's rendition is awesome, pure class...

  • Sorry to dis-illusion you but I was born and still live in the town-what makes anyone think that Brian Ferry is a faggot?

  • Just listened to the Jim McCann version again-by any chance are you him? The words awesome and class certainly do not spring to the lips of this neutral listener!!

  • Barry Wordsworth.... LOOK THIS FELLA UP!

  • Hey euroman32589, you're angry., What is going on with your life?

  • Oh Bryan, still so suave, so sophisticated,

so vocally talented - never stop performing.

  • the master-there is no other for gentleness, empathy, encapulation of love saught and never found. Listen carefully, all you critics out there.

  • hows that?

  • why kill this song van fatty did the same

  • Comment removed

  • well im drunk today and im seldom sober. irish alright. not the ferry man!

karon or is it carron im sozzled

  • The only thing that makes this video watchable is the lovely Ms. Julia Thornton. She keeps me coming back on occasion.;-)

  • @renethibault

Cher Rene Thibault , you are so right. when I first read your comment, I deeply complied to it.

  • Of the many versions available here, this and

Jim McCann's stand out. Van's was very lacklustre, compared to his studio effort with the Chieftans on "Irish Heartbeat."

  • His next project is to tap-dance Beethoven's 5th

  • trying to think of a useful comment...rubbish says it all.

  • That's a real great comment! You're right, pal.

  • Well speaking as an American we don't really have a strong attachment to this song. A Celtic traditional song is just that and open to interpretation. However as a Bryan Ferry Fan I know that he did this version on his 1978 album The Bride Stipped Bare.

  • this is a lame version. But then it is Bryan Ferry I guess, so no surprise.

  • Oh, right--Van the Man. Have you heard him slaughter "My Lagan Love"? Just hideous, and unforgivable. Bryan Ferry is brilliant, and Van Morrison is an overblown hack.

  • I don't know why people just can't enjoy the many talents we are blessed with this incredible song

  • puke!

  • he made a bollox out of lennon's jelous guy, and he's made a tit out of this classic also. now the party's over and im sooooooo tired. grow old gracefully ya tit!

  • the tune is all wrong it is supposed to be a sad song

  • I agree, he tried to make it too trendy......just can tell its all about the money nd not the emotion of tjis trgic song. love drink and death......only in Ireland can we include all three in one

  • DeClan Galbraith blows them "ALL" away singing this song!

After all he was only around 8 years old at the time !!

  • I would much rather listen to him singing Love is the Drug, thank you very much.

  • Thers only man who sing this song the right way, andt that`s Van Morrison!

  • that my friend is the truth and nothing but the truth

  • You've obviously never heard Ronny Drew, Paddy Clancy or Luke Kelly singing this song.

  • i think thats LIAM clancy

  • ya, saw van THE MAN on 2 occasions, pity he cant stay on the stage longer than 20 mins.

  • ? compared to Brian Kennedys version this is pants, even Charlotte Church sings a better version then this. He brings nothing new to this song... Its Shatner like in its delivery

  • He really brings a sense of tragedy to this song. I sense the life of a charming wastral. Very moving.

  • Not as powerful as the Bride Stripped Bare version, but wonderful nonetheless. I have seen many incredible Ferry(with and without Roxy)concerts over the years. He remains one of the formidable song stylists of his era.

  • As I have said here before! But his name is BRYAN, not Brian...and he could just stand and read the phone book and I'd pay for tickets.

  • He's not The Messiah , he's just a very naughty boy ..who keeps murdering poor Dylan.

  • What a voice--honey and brandy mixed with sand...and ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING as a live performer...

  • Merci pour cette très belle vidéo !

  • Great great voice! Looking forward to this new Roxy Musuc almbum including Brian Eno.

  • The full version is on his Bride Stripped Bare solo LP...what a voice--like sand and brandy laced with honey! He is EXQUISITE live!

  • What I mean is, If he is going to try to sing this great Irish ballad he needs to sing the full song, I have heard this song done on Youtube many, even some kid using words I never heard..It has 3 verses

  • Agreed. He did a good job, though. He may have cut some of it to fit with his set time. But you are right, that Declan kid sings a very different version. I think that's because the song is about an old man's final days and a lost love. I don't think that's exactly what people would want to hear from a 10 year old (or whatever).

  • I have to say that I am much more familiar with the two verses he sung here - I've much learning to do. The thing that immediately strikes me about his version is that he makes absolutely no attempt to sing any higher notes. In the first verse (for example) ... 'but the sea is wide' and so on, one is 'supposed' to sing an octave higher than he does here. But whatever. I still enjoyed the simplicity of it.

  • I shall have to dig my vinyl of The Bride Stripped Bare out of the cellar. He's not bad for an old mucker.

  • what happened the middle verse?

  • what did you mean?

  • Can't do wrong by me, I love this

  • Wat godvergeten prachtig!!

  • Stunning

  • Lovely!

  • +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  • Lovely!

Just a quick question: when was this broadcast on Canvas? Can't believe I missed it!

  • How it can be thought of as a desecration when it's so minimal and respectful I don't know! Unless it's just that Ferry isn't Irish? Or maybe it's not maudlin enough.

  • This is the version I like most, but I've always had a right slagging from Irish mates who see it as a sacrilege and a desecration of a traditional favourite. To each his own...
