The whole series of Digimon is inherently based on different dimensions. If you've read some of the early pilots for the mangas then the Digimon parallelomon is introduced who has the power to take digimon and their trainers from different dimensions and take their data. The pilot manga was all about Taichi's adventures alone in the Digital world with his partner who looks like an early Veedramon. There are crossoever between seasons in that manga as well including a chap w/ Davis from 02.

@shadowmoon522 Ryo's story is a very difficult one. Remember in Tamers, supposedly he disappeared to the Digital World. There is a lot of explaning the writers need to do that bring a lot of fans back. Like Ryo's Story, how Angemon and Angewoman were able to reach mega level, and if the other eight digidestined were able to get there as well. Zudomon to Vikemon, Garudamon to Pheonixmon, Lillymon to Rosemon, MegaKabuterimon to HerculesKabuterimon.

As for getting their Digimon back, Takato found a gate to the digital world in the finale so the Tamers obviously used it to get their Digimon back. Hence why Guilmon and the other Digimon are in the real world in Runaway Locomon.
