@ kissmeukiss22 if you did a little research and had an understanding of steam locomotives and diesel locomotives you would know that a steam locomotive is actually fairly green much greener than a diesel. All fuel used in a coal/wood burning stem loco is natural (no refined chemicals) so lower CO2 emittions also that exhaust is mixed with steam and mostly soot which will harmlessly fall back to earth in mere seconds to minutes what causes the ozone layer tare was the use of gasoline and diesel
@Kissmeukiss22 your fucking stupid. Diesel smoke is healthier than what your little compact hybrid puts out into the air. Fucking learn your facts you stupid tree hugger.
Actually, this isn't really the old fashioned way. Rotary plows are still the primary heavy snow removing equipment for U.S. railroads. Union Pacific uses them on Donner Pass, for example.
@Locomotive450 It is when you consider that all of Union Pacific's rotary plows have all been converted to diesel, while this one still runs on steam, as it was designed. My point is that while rotary snow plows are still in use, it is extremely difficult to find one that still runs on steam like this one.
would people shut up about the environmental effects of this, it is being operated at a museum in New Mexico for photographers and rail buffs, and this particular one is no longer operable due to the cost of operation and safety, what most of you are already complaining about has already put this beast out of operation. Go worry about the people driving hummers and trucks that get 4 gallons to the mile, not the train at a museum!
@m3ohwell It's been quiet for a while, Ed- nice video! I rode the Cumbres & Toltec back in '73 or so, and will never forget the ride. Glad to see the ongoing work (2011) with the locomotives there. Sorry: made a bit of a dippy statement, the visible elements that are in the exit gas don't consist solely of carbon but also entrained, non-combustable coal solid byproducts (which are equally as harmless as carbon). Although I should mention that if one of these vehichles went by your house on a regular basis it would turn your walls black (as this particulate matter would deposit itself in the local area).
@Peon546 Honestly if some one gets killed by that thing they had it coming. Not trying to sound harsh, but really.... Like what the fuck would a person be doing or thinking when going anywhere near that thing while its running, You'd have to be a complete retard or just wanting to die!
All this talk about pollution, it's all a load of shite, epa needs to look at humans, a planet full of farting people walking around generates more pollution than 1,000 of these trains.
@foxdmulder I would agree with this. All this black smoke is due to carbon which is being ejected along with the exhaust gas (which isn't a serious pollutant). Pollution gasses (like sulfur oxides, nitrous oxides and carbon oxides) are all invisible to the eye and you need somthing like an IR spectrophotometer to detect them. Environmental organisations are invariably concerned with how things look to the average joe (who doesn't really know anything about the science of pollution)
why steam? Easy! : When you use steam power instead all of this eco-stuff you prevent more snow from falling by simply making the entire climate a little warmer
And we have the NS (Dutch Railways) If flock of snow or three leaves lie on the track, the trains stop ....... Even worse, even the website will stop working.
@tweeplus thats because we have idiots running the trains and maintenance even for 10 cm of snow the bloody NS trains will stop working ,we need some descent USA made machinery over here ! instead of that European en china crap ! that will stop working at minus 10
To those who say it's a nuisance to the environment : What do you suggest, wait until spring ? Also, those don't run 24/7 all winter, they are only used to clear up after a big snowstorm. Most uf the time, the small snowplow integrated in fron of every locomotive is suffiscient to clear the track.
@QAFtuvok101 of course you think that actually is bad for the earth. 1 steam is water. 2 black smoke means power. (sorry that doesnt include hondas) 3 diesel is cleaner then any of the other alternative ways to produce power. gas, electricity, solar, whatever, it doesnt matter how long it runs, or when it runs, all the tree huggers who think they are saving the enviroment, are really killing it more.
Very cool! What's sad is this video that's 13 years old is of better picture quality than 85% of the videos on youtube. I did hear a REAL camera in teh background, though :D
okay, okay...lol...enough with the debating. The next time, this train won't be used, therefore releasing the black smoke...thus the world will then be pollution free..lol. I was wondering where all the world's pollution came from and all the time....it was from this "one" train...man!..lol..
Znakomity film! Dziś można oglądać to tylko tutaj... a szkoda. To były piękne czasy, nic nie było plastykowe, sztuczne, a maszyny miały dusze... Pozdrowienia z Polski :)))
I don't understand exactly how this works. Is it simply that the train is pushing the snow in front, which builds up and gets pulled into the powerful suction of the fan...which then throws it out of the chute? Or is there another part in play that I'm not seeing?
Seriously though. Enough with the "environment" arguments against steam engines. It doesn't hold water. Just cause you see black smoke doesn't mean it's a terrible polluter. Just basic combustion at work. Same pollution as a bonfire.
@hbre78a does it? What about a modern diesel? A hybrid locomotive from GE ... pollutes half the Nitrogen Oxide as a traditional diesel-electric .. and less carbon dioxide as well. But steam is cool i know I like it too
The "smoke" you actually see is large particles of carbon dust. They are too heavy to enter into the atmosphere and cause and negative effects. They simply will fall back to earth; right back where it came from with no effect. Before you go off on me that it will contaminate water sources, you're wrong. Water purification is accomplished by none other than carbon, the same stuff in your expensive Brita filter. As far as the other emissions..no worse than what comes out of your hybrid.
@AntiFoam1 you incorrectly assume that the particulate is pure carbon, which, of course, it is not. It is partially burned hydrocarbons of various sources. What is a major cause of cancer? Yes, partially burned hydrocarbons. Such material COULD pollute water and topsoil. The real issue here, and the reason for my post, is the rise and, in fact, preponderance of pseudo-science. You make false statements, and people "thumbs up" because it is what they WANT to believe. (cont)
@AntiFoam1 (cont) The real issue in this instance, is that, in the end this train is not making one bit of difference to the environment. Were 10,000 running a day, it would have a deleterious affect on health (asthma and the like). Why the post then? You came to a correct conclusion based on BS....luck. "Getting lucky" once in a while is not science. People, even in the scientific community today, are ignoring the difference btwn lab significance and real world significance.
@kenfo0 Nobody gives a shit about what you have to say because, oh I don't know, it's WRONG! I happen to be a chemical engineer and graduated magna cum laude so I'm slightly more educated than YOU. Recommendation: Stop spewing nonsense and leave education to REAL professionals. I didn't go to school for 6 years to have some wannabe hippie environmentalist try to disprove the blatant truth! Next time, I suggest doing real research instead of just copying the first fallacy you find on Google!
@AntiFoam1 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ok kiddie. That's all cute and all, but you forgot "indian chief, spaceman and navy seal" in your "resume". You don't have the first bit of understanding of chemistry. No hippie, I am SO far right of a lying faggot like you, your head would spin round and round. The only issue here was "what is coming out of the smoke stack".There is a VERY simple proof that you are wrong. I wonder if anyone knows what it is? I'll wait a bit and see...it is VERY simple.
@AntiFoam1 Further, you fake, lying dumbass, your statement "...slightly more educated than you." is also clearly bs, proving you are DEFINITELY NOT more educated than me. Again, I want to see who can get it. I'll let it ride a few days. These are two simple teaching moments to show people how to spot a liar and think critically.
You are wrong. If the smoke were just carbon particles, that train wouldn't be moving. The very idea of emitting carbon dioxide is that when you burn carbon you get energy and carbon dioxide. There won't be one without the other. I don't know what particles that smoke contains and why It's that dark, but I do know that carbon dioxide is emitted, and being gas that most definetly enters the atmosphere.
@AntiFoam1 yeah i know i hate ppl saying "OH MY GOD IM GOING TO CALL EPA!! "when ever it doesnt even cause nasty effects on earth and i didnt know the rotary plow was still in use ...
Completely incorrect. Hybrids contain Copper and Nickel, both of which are mined, amongst other places, in a very nasty mine in Canada, where they do massive damage to the environment. Carbon, however, is prevalent everywhere, and does very little damage to the environment. So, a hybrid, in the process of being created, does a very large amount of damage to the environment, compared to something that creates carbon as it's sole emission.
@AntiFoam1 The carbon used in filters and the particles from the burnt coal are two completely different things. First of all, the coal does not completely burn, it is better defined as fine cinders. It is NOT what you would use to filter water. The Carbon used in filters is pure. The particles are also acidic, where do you think the term acid rain comes from?? That is part of the reason boilers have to be inspected and rebuilt every so often.
@ffjsb Please if your gonna act like you know something about acid rain.. Get your facts straight. You don't have a clue how acid rain becomes that way.. It shows in your statement. Read up on acid rain or dont comment about it.. Geez
@AntiFoam1 muuuuuch worse... apart from carbon, there's also all kinds of hydrocarbons...in fact, it's what causes the smell, CO, CO2 and water vapor are odorless, that diesel (or gasoline) like smell is caused by various hydrocarbons...pretty sure you wouldn't want that in your breakfast...
@AKAtheA Actually I would want all that in my breakfast so shut up and die you stupid hippy and let me enjoy the good things in life instead of thinking everything is killing us and the earth
@AKAtheA Bunch of school dropouts. Why do people like you make comments on here and just show your ignorance. If you'll go to school you'll find out there is carbon in your breakfast and your body and just about everything.. Damn... I hate stupid.
@harescrambleracer So by looking @ your comment, you obviously must have a masters in organic chemistry... I wrote HC, standing for hydrocarbon...while HCs can be pretty much anything organic, when talking about fossil fueled engine emission, it's supposed to be clear that I'm talking about something called "volatile organic compounds"...
Now, even the "pure" carbon emissions here are bad, since they're in form of small particles, which tend to end up in the lungs, decreasing their capacity..
@harescrambleracer I'll have no problem with saying that a chunk of carbon is perfectly safe (unless it lands on your head...), but microparticles of pretty much anything in the air we breathe are a serious health hazard...same with f.e. volcanic ash - if you breathe enough of it in, you die...
And to top it off, did you know, that there's fluorine in your toothpaste? Perfectly harmless, but you wouldn't want a hands-on experience with the pure element.../end trolling/
@harescrambleracer of course everything is made from carbon...in combination with other elements... why don't you go eat some pure carbon though and see what happens to you.
think about it.. even too much oxygen in in its pure form can kill you, you know. (see oxidants, oxidization) and it's ( their ) effects on the human body... you might want to take some refresher courses in psy sci,and chem, because you missed some facts. start at grade 9.( first year high school).
@scythelord Its just how diesels get frowned upon for being dirty, but actually the emissions is A LOT cleaner than gasoline. The black smoke is just pure carbon which is heavy and ends up falling back down anyway once it cools and clumps together with rain.
If you throw small children into it will it go faster?!

@scythelord a diesel engine puts off my polution than a coal burner
hbre78a 1 year ago
@hbre78a does it? What about a modern diesel? A hybrid locomotive from GE ... pollutes half the Nitrogen Oxide as a traditional diesel-electric .. and less carbon dioxide as well. But steam is cool i know I like it too
danwat1234 1 year ago
@scythelord Exactly!
skybluedragonator 1 year ago
@scythelord yeah, steam engines pollute less air than mdern diesel locomotives...
almost all that comes out lands on the ground and biodegrades.

@scythelord= Same pollution as the bad breath of thos hippies. And their flatulence too.
vigo894 1 year ago 7
@scythelord Which is still pollution, dude.

AntiFoam1 1 year ago 90
@AntiFoam1 you incorrectly assume that the particulate is pure carbon, which, of course, it is not. It is partially burned hydrocarbons of various sources. What is a major cause of cancer? Yes, partially burned hydrocarbons. Such material COULD pollute water and topsoil. The real issue here, and the reason for my post, is the rise and, in fact, preponderance of pseudo-science. You make false statements, and people "thumbs up" because it is what they WANT to believe. (cont)
kenfo0 1 year ago
@AntiFoam1 (cont) The real issue in this instance, is that, in the end this train is not making one bit of difference to the environment. Were 10,000 running a day, it would have a deleterious affect on health (asthma and the like). Why the post then? You came to a correct conclusion based on BS....luck. "Getting lucky" once in a while is not science. People, even in the scientific community today, are ignoring the difference btwn lab significance and real world significance.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0 Nobody gives a shit about what you have to say because, oh I don't know, it's WRONG! I happen to be a chemical engineer and graduated magna cum laude so I'm slightly more educated than YOU. Recommendation: Stop spewing nonsense and leave education to REAL professionals. I didn't go to school for 6 years to have some wannabe hippie environmentalist try to disprove the blatant truth! Next time, I suggest doing real research instead of just copying the first fallacy you find on Google!
AntiFoam1 1 year ago
@AntiFoam1 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ok kiddie. That's all cute and all, but you forgot "indian chief, spaceman and navy seal" in your "resume". You don't have the first bit of understanding of chemistry. No hippie, I am SO far right of a lying faggot like you, your head would spin round and round. The only issue here was "what is coming out of the smoke stack".There is a VERY simple proof that you are wrong. I wonder if anyone knows what it is? I'll wait a bit and see...it is VERY simple.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@AntiFoam1 Further, you fake, lying dumbass, your statement "...slightly more educated than you." is also clearly bs, proving you are DEFINITELY NOT more educated than me. Again, I want to see who can get it. I'll let it ride a few days. These are two simple teaching moments to show people how to spot a liar and think critically.

@AntiFoam1 I like your coment...seriously i didnt know that!!
TonyMcDark 11 months ago
@AntiFoam1

"when ever it doesnt even cause nasty effects on earth and i didnt know the rotary plow was still in use ...
southern4501isawesom 9 months ago
Completely incorrect. Hybrids contain Copper and Nickel, both of which are mined, amongst other places, in a very nasty mine in Canada, where they do massive damage to the environment. Carbon, however, is prevalent everywhere, and does very little damage to the environment. So, a hybrid, in the process of being created, does a very large amount of damage to the environment, compared to something that creates carbon as it's sole emission.
SarraPiyopiyo 7 months ago
@AntiFoam1 The carbon used in filters and the particles from the burnt coal are two completely different things. First of all, the coal does not completely burn, it is better defined as fine cinders. It is NOT what you would use to filter water. The Carbon used in filters is pure. The particles are also acidic, where do you think the term acid rain comes from?? That is part of the reason boilers have to be inspected and rebuilt every so often.
ffjsb 6 months ago
@ffjsb Please if your gonna act like you know something about acid rain.. Get your facts straight. You don't have a clue how acid rain becomes that way.. It shows in your statement. Read up on acid rain or dont comment about it.. Geez
harescrambleracer 4 months ago
@AntiFoam1 muuuuuch worse... apart from carbon, there's also all kinds of hydrocarbons...in fact, it's what causes the smell, CO, CO2 and water vapor are odorless, that diesel (or gasoline) like smell is caused by various hydrocarbons...pretty sure you wouldn't want that in your breakfast...
AKAtheA 5 months ago
@AKAtheA Actually I would want all that in my breakfast so shut up and die you stupid hippy and let me enjoy the good things in life instead of thinking everything is killing us and the earth
blackXSpr 5 months ago
@blackXSpr well, in that case enjoy your HC rich breakfast... have fun dieing in ignorance and stupidity...
AKAtheA 5 months ago
@AKAtheA Bunch of school dropouts. Why do people like you make comments on here and just show your ignorance. If you'll go to school you'll find out there is carbon in your breakfast and your body and just about everything.. Damn... I hate stupid.
harescrambleracer 4 months ago
@harescrambleracer So by looking @ your comment, you obviously must have a masters in organic chemistry... I wrote HC, standing for hydrocarbon...while HCs can be pretty much anything organic, when talking about fossil fueled engine emission, it's supposed to be clear that I'm talking about something called "volatile organic compounds"...
Now, even the "pure" carbon emissions here are bad, since they're in form of small particles, which tend to end up in the lungs, decreasing their capacity..
AKAtheA 4 months ago
@harescrambleracer I'll have no problem with saying that a chunk of carbon is perfectly safe (unless it lands on your head...), but microparticles of pretty much anything in the air we breathe are a serious health hazard...same with f.e. volcanic ash - if you breathe enough of it in, you die...
And to top it off, did you know, that there's fluorine in your toothpaste? Perfectly harmless, but you wouldn't want a hands-on experience with the pure element.../end trolling/
AKAtheA 4 months ago
@AKAtheA thought it was flouride, made from hexa-flourine or some such?
bovinicusdivinicus 4 months ago
@bovinicusdivinicus what?
AKAtheA 4 months ago
@harescrambleracer of course everything is made from carbon...in combination with other elements... why don't you go eat some pure carbon though and see what happens to you.
think about it.. even too much oxygen in in its pure form can kill you, you know. (see oxidants, oxidization) and it's ( their ) effects on the human body... you might want to take some refresher courses in psy sci,and chem, because you missed some facts. start at grade 9.( first year high school).
bovinicusdivinicus 4 months ago
@scythelord Anyway, they are only used for a few days every year. It's not as if they worked 24/7 all winter.
QAFtuvok101 1 year ago
@scythelord Its just how diesels get frowned upon for being dirty, but actually the emissions is A LOT cleaner than gasoline. The black smoke is just pure carbon which is heavy and ends up falling back down anyway once it cools and clumps together with rain.
