Except for the fact that Patton has made guest appearances with Tool during live shows and Danny Carey even made a surprise appearance at a Faith no More concert last year.
If you mean he has nothing to do with Tool as far as the studio goes you are correct.
Its all good. If you get a chance, look up Faith no More's last concert in Los Angeles. There's video of Danny coming out of the audience. The people that recognize him go insane.
Back in 09, there were rumor's about Danny collaborating with Patton on something. I dont know if anything came out of it. Maybe some other folks will know. I dont see Danny's name listed on the Peeping Tom album and Patton worked with a TON of artists for that record even Massive Attack (Kill the DJ)
If Patton keeps up the work into his later days, he might be comparable to the likes of Beethoven, maybe. Definitely comparable to Schoenberg though. :P
Mike Patton is my musical hero but Trey Spruance writes as much for this band as Mike does. And Trey produces them. Mr. Bungle would not be the same band without him.
Patton is THE MAN, but all the people he plays with in ALL is projects, are all world class muscians and they ROCK!!!!! Ive never heard or seen a bad performance ever.
The fact that the comment praising mike Patton's compositional ability is the top rated comment is a real fucking shame. I agree that Patton is an absolutely amazing musician, but each and every member of Mr. Bungle deserves just as much praise, especially so with Dunn and Spruance, who share the majority of Bungle's compositional credits.
Mike Patton is ages ahead of today's audience...just take a look at those puzzled... arm-crossed spectators...How am I supposed to dance this ??? G.R.E.A.T. Mr. Bungle!
@LazersaurusRex Does any of Patton's oeuvre suggest FZ to you? I'm a fan going back to Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny and caress and fetish over 60 of Zappa's rekkids. Maybe Patton has done Do-Wap that I'm unaware of.
There was Mike Keneally before Dweezil started taking lessons from Frank Gambale to tackle FZ's formidable compositions. Mike has FZ's spirit of "hanging it all out" whether performing or composing. This to me is how "bars get raised" in terms of musical achievement.
Yeah, I never meant to say they were similar in terms of musical style, though Patton has done some do-wop stuff. He's obviously not obsessed with it like Zappa seemed to be. There are some correlations but most of them relate to their free-wheeling composition style and jazz influences.
The most obvious similarly is their musical diversity, the fact that they sound like no one before, and that they are/were constantly pushing the bar with their music.
This is the song that plays in my head on Friday afternoons in the office in anticipation of what is going to happen once the sun goes down. *Sigh* This band just makes me smile.
Thank God for this band--they made the music that most did'nt have the balls or insight and skills to create.Mike Patton..well I'm not a poet so my words don't suffice but needless to say this guy really is legendary.
Bizzare Fest. Very appropriate for Bungle to be there. Great band, just got their first album and California. Loving every sound that comes out of the speakers.
Forget about all of the naysayers that think the only way to listen to music is by filling your overpriced iPhone with Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold and Children of Bodom. This is art.
@MrGameruler101 Love those bands, not sure if he was "hating" on them though, kinda of just using an example, like kids don't know enough bands like mr bungle you know? idk haha
@DrKr0wbar hey man...A7X is awesome too... A few of the members cite Mr. Bungle as their favorite band ever. Synyster Gates said and him and Jimmy used to have a band that was really similar to them, Pinkly Smooth, you should check it out.
@DrKr0wbar dont hate i love A7X just as much as i love most of pattons stuff.
also some of their stuff was inspired by mr bungle. back before thay were popular their drummer and guitarist made a side band called pinkly smooth which was definitely inspired by patton. if you like this you shoul look them up.
Two things that really upset me about this: A. The "may your sun be blown out ..." section is not nearly as the album version B. The loud noise at the end is non existent
@TheLeakySon I am guessing you don't go to too many live shows. Personally, I feel cheated if I go to a show and all that they do is give me a cookie-cutter version of their album... I might as well sit home, save the cash, and listen to the album. It is almost like buying a ticket and going to a football game that you saw on TV last sunday... If you've already seen it, then what is the point?
@KSTCBH23 I actually do, and alot of the shows they DO change parts of the songs that aren't "cookie-cutter" versions. What they did here with the droning harmonies seemed like a cop out and nothing to do with doing something different.
@TheLeakySon Ok. However, Trey is playing relatively the same guitar part as heard on the album. It is just that they decided to arrange the live performance around that part, rather than play it as heard on the album (i.e. the vocal solo). I imagine the fact that they were playing the Bizarre Festival in Germany had quite a large effect on this decision. Since Mr. Bungle isn't exactly known as a heavy band, they catered to that particular audience by heavying up the tune.
I love Mr Bungle, but it is definitely an acquired taste. Id like to thank Frank Zappa for prepping me for the genius of Mike Patton. I saw them live during the first Album tour way back. A kid jumped on stage and Mike, who was wearing coveralls and a Jason mask, grabbed the kid, threw him into the drum set and started to dry hump him. Needless to say, a show to remember.
@danzaviva lol seriously?, I saw bungle back in the day in the 92 tour, and patton kicked in the face a guy who was grabbing his legs, everyone was laughing but I wanted to kick the shit out of hem, I should have done it.
Ive said it a million times, Mike is like a twisted, modern Beethoven. The arrangements he does in his bands is amazing. Like, you can hear 10 to 20 seconds of amazing riffs and melodies, and yet people dont like them cuz they arent "normal". Well whats normal? taking that 20 second melody and stretching it into a 4 minute "song"? he throws a lotta ideas into tracks and i respect the hell out of him and all he plays/collaborates with.
@DOGxDAYxSONxRISE that's what i love about mr. bungle along wiht most of Patton's other musical projects. there is so much going on in each song. it kind of reminds me of frank zappa's music because, like you said, there are so many incredible riffs and melodies being performed in such a short span of time. it's unconventional to the point where people are turned off by it, but i love that kind of stuff. sensory overloads are what music should evoke.
@DOGxDAYxSONxRISE i second that one man. i've always felt (though ive never met him) that patton can't NOT make music. he is driven and compulsively making music. this drives you to the outer boundaries...for real. but, those of us interested, its the place to be.
He's lucky he is "THE" Mike Patton.. because with a crowd that dead, being anyone else would suck.
Don't understand how everyone didn't go crazy at that Chuck part, always gets me. Maybe they should've actually done the whole arabic sounding lead up and then it'd go off.
@yahoorsor Towards the end Zappa was done with bands and Bungle's demise highlights why that might be. Basically, certain members were so egocentric that they could no longer get along. That was Zappa's main problem with dealing with bands of musicians with exceptional talent. But in regards to your comment I think Zappa still pushed the bar further with stuff like the Adventures of Gregory Peccary, Joe's Garage and Punky's Whip
This feels exactly like listening to Frank Zappa.

This could be something that Frank Zappa and The Mothers could of created if they were around today!!!
yahoorsor 1 year ago
@yahoorsor Towards the end Zappa was done with bands and Bungle's demise highlights why that might be. Basically, certain members were so egocentric that they could no longer get along. That was Zappa's main problem with dealing with bands of musicians with exceptional talent. But in regards to your comment I think Zappa still pushed the bar further with stuff like the Adventures of Gregory Peccary, Joe's Garage and Punky's Whip
