War is more than just bravery - discipline, leadership, and logistics are required. As long as the talibs remain allied with AQ we (ISAF) need to be there and to crush them. I think without ISAF, your A-stan would quickly return to the regional warlords' outright control, and the talibs have already shown what they can do in those circumstances.

This was intended as a transitional solution to kick start Afghan cooperation, end systemic feudalism, and bring eventual change by democratic processes. The subversion of the democratic process by these warlords, who naturally wish to maintain power, might have been better countered - but hey, this is Afghanistan. So, good intentions vs reality of power - what else to do?
