Why oh Why must each and every you tube clip be a comparison between who is 'the best'? Surely one of the joys of hearing different performers is seeing what each brings to a piece or a performance.

No doubt she has a tremendously powerful voice but this aria isn't performed as consistently effortless as La Callas by any stretch, nor has it the vocal drama and insight. It's thin in places as if she's just holding it and the pronunciation of lontana is odd, not Italian. Her Chi il bel sogno di Doretta to the right is absolutely superb though.

IMO-Sarah Brightman does a better job on this...than anyone (including Callas!:) Yes, I said it...Sarah Brightman sang a song better than Callas...big deal. Its not always about the voice...Sarah just seems to really sell the emotion and drama of this song better than anyone else. Just sayin'....:)

@anubis1974 You aren't talking of that Sarah Brightman who can't control her breath, has a tiny voice that can't be heard without microphone and sing opera arias emotionless, are you? Because if you are, I think you should listen better. Callas was the queen of pathos, Caballé the master of breath and Tebaldi had the voice og an angel... sorry, but Sarah should just listen to one of them sing this aria and then close her mouth.

Kiri Te Kanawa always had a beautiful voice and a solid vocal technique, and a wonderful range. She does a beautiful job on this aria. She could be a dreadful bore at times though, sometimes i just wanted to goose that pretty behind of hers to get some nuane and emotion in her singing, when she was great she was great, but I remember hearibg her in a recital in WWashington,Dc at the Kennedy Center and struggling to stay awake cause she was such a bore.

i love old-school class!!!! she how she keeps a 'poker face' all through the effort! none of that ticking,trembling,grimaces we get from singers these days! who wants reality when we go to the opera huh?most of the plots are no better than jerry-springer but the music is often pure genius! pure cerebral and emotional escapism! love it!

Hey Guys, don't fight! And don't criticize with such lightness! Both Callas and Kiri Te Kanawa are great! I myself prefer Callas rendition (sad and full of remorse) but love Kiri in Tosca arias... Each of those two sopranos will remain a monument in the opera history.

Not really. Kiri's interpretation, to me, is a bit wailing and too strong for such a sad aria. On the other hand, Callas has this unique mix of sorrow and remorse which matches the lyrics ("I will go away alone and far" = "Ne andrò sola e lontana")

She looks and sounds just like a woman should. As for this performance, it's delightful. You know, we can analyse it all we want, but analysis is just rationalization. Gut reaction comes first. My comment is not so much about the performance - which was wonderful - as about the performer. Kiri is one of those women who grow more beautiful with age. I think that's because life is a process of the soul emerging and manifesting itself, for better or worse: and her's is a truly beautiful soul. Those eyes - I fall into them. She's very likeable, has a delicate lightness, and this is fine, but i prefer her with some Mozart, e.g Dove sono. For this aria, i'd go with Caballe- just my personal taste, so i guess that means i hang too for not choosing Callas, though i can never understand why hostilities over such things often verge on WW3 on youtube. Really, it's about appreciation more than contests.

This aria requires much more voice than Kiri could give. She's a light soprano, in my opinion. Her singing is not bad, by any stretch of the imagination, no! It's just that the powerful kick that this aria needs is lacking.

She starts weak but certainly builds up toward the end and finishes effectively, this work is highly dramatic and needs good acting with it - callas would be the best for this aria as she is best actor but she never acted this role!! pity. This aria is so beautiful thou, I don't think anybody with half a beautiful voice would not shine in it.

Catalani's orchestration and composition should give Verdi and Wagner a 360 in their graves.
