@DRAT311 lets use some logic here. The camera man on board showed the fuel gages of the Ady Gil while they where stalled and had virtually no gas. Try watching the actual episode. Second here is a video that shows that the Japanese turn into the Ady Gil. And sense we can see in this video that they don't turn their engines on until the last minute we can deduct that the only reason they were hit was because they turned into a stalled boat. Which ALWAYS has the right of way.

If the Ady Gil had never moved the whaling whip would have barely missed it. Go back to my picture in picture one for an even clearer shot of the Ady Gils engine wake perfectly lining up with the timing of it moving from the left side of the screen to the right just before impact. If only they had pushed the throttle the other way.
