I love how the Sammy Davis Jr. (the dog) stays at the grave longer, because the dog was a great part of the man's life. This movie is nothing short of an emotional breakdown, first you smile, then you laugh, then you wonder, then you cry.
For me as for Jew, who was born in Odessa it's also a little bit difficult to watch this film(too many emotions)
The grandfather has committed a suicide because he had understood that he done a great mistake by disclaiming the fact, that he is a Jew and he couldn't forgive it to himself.
i loved this movie, it's just, i don't understand the ending with the waitress from the restaurant, the little kid who deflated the tire, and the construction worker. SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!
i guess they trying to say that people around us have similar experiences in their lives, u meet someone and later u realize u know him better than u thought, simply that everything is illuminated. basicly this film is made in czech studios and this is very czech style of doing movies.
well, what i meant was i still love it even though i still don't understand the ending that much, and what other czech films would you recommend? this is the only one i've seen
I think the girl is the old woman, because she was collecting the dead peoples things. When he saw her I think he fell in love with her. That could be why he does such an intimate thing like kissing the palm of her hand when he tells her the war is over.
I like the ending in the movie better than the ending in the book. (the movie ending explains more of what happens while the book leaves the ending cut short)
i LOVED this movie, im a russian/ukrainian/american, so i dont have to read subtitles, and the begining is very funny. the movie is very deep, and i watch it every chance i get. but one thing i dont get, can someone please explain to them the metaphor with all those people at the end?? please message me or e-mail me
the idea is that the REAL jonathan safran foer (the one who wrote the book), is saying that he really did go to Trochimbrod in a search for the person who saved his grandfather. however, many parts of the book (such as meeting alex, finding the sister, etc), were put in there as fictional elements. i think the people shown at the end were the people who he carried in his memory from his real trip.
Im not exactly sure, but I think the airport lady at the door was the waitress from the potato scene and the old man was one of the workers they asked for directions (i think) Im not sure who the kid was, but then again I haven't seen this movie for a loooong time. I just finished the book yesterday though. :)
just finished the book today. i'd love to see this movie! aylakadamk is it possible for you to post the movie? that would be the greatest! this wasn't even released here in the philippines... you would be a "premium" person if you could load the movie...please please please! thanks in adavance...
i dont understand why people dont like jews and why its wrong to have so called "Jew-o-Sympathetic" movies, yet its ok to have so called "african-American-o-smpathetic" movies, i just dont see why jews cant get a little bit of sympathy but every other race on the face of this fuckin earth can.
GREAT MOVIE!!! loved it. only one question: throughout this clip, there is a song that's playing... do you, or anyone else, happen to know the name of the song? thanks for your time and effort!
The songs from Paul Cantelon who composed the music in the movie. Im pretty sure that ones called Inside Out. The sound track is pretty cool, it features 2 great Gogol Bordello (The guy who plays Alex's band)tracks.
Ok, wrong comment there, it was Tin Hat Trio - Fear of the South playing there... I should watch the clip first. And that was replying to CineAltcineva question.
i love this movie. thanks for posting this. would you mind posting the clip where Alexander Perchov has his flasback (the scene where he and the other Jewish men are lined along the wall to be shot) i know it's a lot to ask, but I would really appreciate
Eugene Hutz looks SO GOOD at the last scene...

What I don't get is that really long flashback the grandfather had, when the girl watched him...what happened?
LactoseTolerante 4 years ago
maybe he realized he doesnt want to hide anymore, it all came back to him and he decided to end up his life as a Jew which he was.

He was the kid who asked for chewing gum and then tried to deflate the tire.

That's right! I saw it the other day and saw he was that kid that put the pebble in their tire.

Another Jew-o-sympathetic movie.. that tries to make others love Jews indirectly...
The thing is, I have no problems with Jewish.. but these movies keep pumping..

just shut up and go watch some steven seagal movies. i guess those don't "pump" so much and you like'em more.

Great movie. I love that it ends with 'Jonfan' finding a place where he can take something OUT of a bag.
Naturally, I had to buy "Fear of the South".
