Because US/EU regulations. It is a brilliant engine if you're a small car maker like Pagani who is exempt thanks to your tiny production volume. The big guys are forced to play nice with nature by using smaller turbo changed and direct injection engines to get better numbers. Not HP and torque numbers, but CO2 and fuel mileage numbers.

The M156 and M159 series engines have fancy stuff like variable whatever the fucks and continuous something or others. The old V12's only have fuel injection to brag about. They are dinosaurs relative to Merc's newer engine designs, and as such, will be going the way of the dodo thanks to fruity tree huggers who don't like when people have fun.

@jerkininjamaica its not really a manual, in that you only have to pull a lever and its not really an automatic in that it doesnt use a torque converter. Its called an automated manual. You pull the lever and the computer does all the clutch work and the shifting for you. In essense it has all the inner working of a manual but shifts automatically.
