  • what are the kinds of tobacco and what are the differences between them, like perique, english, virginia and aromatics (are there any other types?).

    please reply

  • @XxDahamonnahxX

Perique is a pungent blending tobacco, not used straight, found in many English and fermented Virginia blends.English is Oriental (Turkish) leaf blended with Latikia, a black smokey leaf usually from Syria. A spicy smokey flavor. Virginia is a bright tan-light brown leaf grown mainly in (you guessed it) Virginia. Fermented Virginia is a very rich & sweet smoke with a lighter pleasant aroma.Aromatic in England means Latikia, here it is a cavendish process.

    DHB

  • ok, quick question, is it common for the tobacco nearest around the edge to remain un-burnt? is there a tamping technique for that, or is it just something that I have to put up with?

  • @adls08

This problem comes from incomplete lighting and creates a tunneling effect. Running the lighter in a circular manner around the chamber during the first (charring) light and again during the second lighting will prevent this.

    DHB

  • Your technique of lighting a pipe has helped me... Thank you

  • and if you have a weed pipe in your hand people will believe nothing you say.

  • What a man's man

  • This make of pipe is designed to work with a paper filter. Yes, you can smoke it without the filter, but with all that metal exposed to hot smoke, it will tend to smoke wet. My advice for this type of pipe is to use the filter.

As you continue to buy pipes, try them without filters. Most pipes do not use them. The objective here is for the briar to do the filtering. The better the briar, the better it filters.

  • @studebakerdaytona thanks a lot man!

  • okay i have a question. i just bought my first pipe off my friend. its a Dr. Grabow. and when i opened it i realized there was a white filter in it (i didnt even know pipes required filters) now is the filter absolutely necessary? can you use a pipe without it? or just leave the same one in all the time? someone please respond!

  • @chazyfizle

Dr. Grabow and corn cob pipes use that type of filter. Most expensive pipes don't use those. As to your question, it is not necessary and most people throw those filters out. Those filters do capture some nicotine and moisture but they are not necessary - it is your preference. If you do smoke with the filter, you don't want to use the same filter for more than a couple smokes, they need to be replaced as they will become nasty after about 3 or so smokes.

  • I like this guy! Don't see many people with pipes any more.

  • Fantastic - I'm going into my boss's office with my pipe in hand and let him know I'm not paid enough -- Great Video - thanks for making it

  • Great video, best one out there for new pipe smokers! Danke

  • Mr. Beahrs,

I have a question as to why you stopped making videos? Or did you move to another channel/account?

    Thank you.

    Demetrius Platon

  • Hello again. I don't know where our posted answer went. Anyway, we do ship to Austraila now, so let us know what type of blend(s) you like and we can send them over. We carry the lighter at $13.95. I use them all the time.

Let us know how we may help. Thank you again for your kind comments.

    DHB

  • Dear Mr Bearhrs,

Congratulations on your fantastic You Tube video, very well presented.

After seeing the video I've managed to track down a Savinelli non-pereil. Its a fantastic pipe and I'm so happy with my purchase.

I'm from Australia and we don't have a lot of selection when it comes to tobacco blends

Just wondering if you have a favourite or few tobaccos and if you would be willing to send it to Australia

Also, your lighter is great, I'd also like to get one of those also.

    Thanks

    Dan Tennant

  • Mr. Beahrs

Great, great video! Just wanted to ask what the model number of that Savinelli is? Such a beautiful pipe! Please on the behalf of you tubes pipe smoking community keep these informative videos coming. Thanks

  • @JohnnyQuatro1

Thank you. The pipe number is quite worn but appears to be 9101. Smooth non-pareils have not been made in years, but if I receive many more requests for them, I will see if I can have less than the usual required number made.

    DHB

  • This is a very informative video! Thanks for posting this! Yes Pipe smokers reunite! It is making a comeback and we will take over the world!

  • I'm new to pipe among so thanks for the advice

  • HA, You have no idea how many times I get asked if my pipe tool is a coke spoon. Hopefully I can wander my way into your shop sometime.

  • @KiwiLindekugel

Thanks, I hope to meet you here sometime. "Here" is now 3600 Lexington ave. N, Suite 104, Shoreview MN 55126.(County Road "E' & Lexington ave N, NW quarter) 651-489-7504

    Thanks

    DHB

  • I have always found that a moustache compliments the pipe :)

  • The last words was the best! Great video!

  • @Ivarsday

    Thank you and its true!

    DHB

  • does the pipe pitured in this video not require a filter?

  • @metachozoite

You are correct, this pipe does not. When cleaning a filtered pipe, it is of course necessary to first remove the filter.

    DHB

  • @studebakerdaytona how doe sit not make you sick?

  • @metachozoite

Moderation. It is an enjoyment, not an addiction.

    DHB

  • @studebakerdaytona same here...but I wanna try some tobacco thats flavoried...ya know like a dessert :)

  • @metachozoi Go to your local tobacconist and ask for a Vanilla-based blend. Don't be surprised if one of them is jet black, it may look strong but isn't. Most pipe shops have at least two such blends and it is a good place to start. And always remember: if they don't have it, we do. Always glad to help-

    DHB

  • @studebakerdaytona kk thanks man!

  • Great video, I'm definitely going to give pipe smoking a try

  • @rokikid

    Welcome to the fraternity!

    DHB

  • Wonderful instructional video sir, I've been smoking and collecting since 1979, you obviously know what you're talking about. I hope some of these other guys on youtube making videos of themselves smoking a pipe - which I don't understand why they make them - watch your video and LEARN HOW to smoke a puipe properly. The majority of the videos I've seen here, the smoker is basically hot-piping their pipe which as you kinow makes for a lousy smoke.

  • @IchbinNamenlos

Wir sind JRF Co. Thank you for your comments.Proper smoking procedure is the key to fully enjoying a pipe. I hope to get back to these videos soon. Right now, we are moving the shop to a new and better location, so my time is consumed with moving. We hope to be back soon.

P.S. We are asking everyone to contact their Senators and Congressmen to support HR 1639, a bill to prevent FDA regulation of the premium cigar industry. I hope you will help.

    Thank you

    DHB

  • Was that a lampoon. Is the whole thing a lie? Are smoking pipes even real?

  • Wonderful video. I am new to the pipe smoking fraternity and found your comments to be informative and interesting. Thanks a lot.

  • This guy really seems to know what he is talking about, and its the best pipe i seen so far.

  • Thanks for this very instructional (and highly enjoyable) video! I have two noob questions, if you don't mind.

    1. Do you need to use pipe cleaners after every single smoke, or just on a semi-regular basis?

    2. Is it true that you shouldn't smoke your pipe more than once in a 12-hour period, and if so, does that preclude the possibility of putting down a pipe mid-bowl and coming back to it later, once it's already cooled down?

    Thanks again!

  • @RationalDischarge

There must be some sort of problem; I answered your questions before but it didn't post. Anyway after every smoke, wait until the pipe cools to room temperature, and then use a pipe cleaner.

Smoke any pipe only once in a 24 hour period. The briar cells need time to cool, contract & dry out

I re-light my shop pipe all the time. My advice is don't let the partial smoked/burned tobacco sit in there over night or more than a couple of hours. This practice can sour a pipe.

    DHB

  • Do they make that pipe anymore? It's beautiful. Anyone have a link to a website?

  • Sorry, it hasn't been made in a smooth finish in some time. Let me know and I'll see what I can find.

    DHB

  • this guy is cool

  • I'm just curious, what are the health risks for smoking a pipe compared to cigarettes?

  • @xFalloutVids

I have read that the health risk(s) with pipe tobacco are way lower than cigarettes.Pipe smoke is not meant to be inhaled, and the quality of the tobacco is generally way better.

    DHB

  • So what exactly is the diffe1ence between a cigaret2e and pipe! Sice the both smoke tabacco

  • @zippeduniform3

Pipe tobacco is superior in quality and used by people who are superior in character.

  • This helped a whole lot,

    Awesome advice, thanks

  • Awesome, Thank you good Sir.

  • lol ''no its not a coke spoon''

  • @KittenWithA9mm

I wonder why he knows the difference them XD

  • I recently started smoking cigars but I also have an attraction to the pipe.

thank you very much for this video.

  • Thanks for this! I hope you have grandkids to pass this on to at some point

  • Excellent video. Best "how to" on pipe smoking I've seen.

  • @FYB74

Thank you. We are going to move the shop, so in light of this, it may be a while before we get the next in the series out, but we will. ( if you want to find out who your true friends are, just ask them to help you move...)

    DHB

  • Is it okay to hold the pipe with just your teeth or is that bad for the pipe

  • @jbs395

Holding a pipe only in one's teeth goes on all the time, but I do not advise it. It is hard on the bit and can be hard on your teeth. Way back in the 19th century, walking down the street with a pipe or cigar clamped in your mouth was considered bad manners.Pipes smoked in this manner tend to smoke wet and hot.

    DHB

  • how long does a full bowl usually last? I've been smoking cigars for about a year now and would love to try a pipe out

  • @Anon1352

This depends upon many factors, the size of the chamber being primary. How much time have you put aside to smoke the pipe? Select a chamber size to match this time period. I have found that smaller chambers last about 30-35 minutes and larger "standard sized" ones about an hour.Above all, don't rush it. A "rushed" pipe will smoke hot. Relax and enjoy!

    DHB

  • David, Great meeting you yesterday and picking your brain about my new found "hobby". One question...when I am relighting my pipe if it happens to go out during the smoking process, is it advisable to lightly re-tamp?

    Long Ashes and Aromatic Smokes,

    Jason

  • @BuggieBlade

    I always re-tamp first, then re-light.

  • Thank you so much for this video. I have had so much trouble in keeping my pipe lit and this video was really helpful. I now keep my pipe lit without any problems.

  • HAHAHA "no its not a coke spoon" thats funny

  • I just got into pipe smoking about 6 months ago, i bought a low end pipe and some tobacco. I have now moved on and got myself a mid range Brigham pipe, however i still have some of the original tobacco that i bought and it has gone rather dry. Is there a way to rehydrate that tobacco or should i get rid of it? Thanks.

  • @JohnMuise

One of the easiest ways to rehydrate pipe tobacco is to put it into a zip lock bag, drop in about a dozen fat drops of water, shut the bag trapping all of the air you can inside, shake it around and leave the bag in a sunny place. The water within will spread throughout the bag evenly.

    DHB

  • @Roux674 Thanks for the reply. I tried an experiment using strong a Bourbon whiskey and it worked quite well.

  • Your voice is documental-quality sir!

  • Thanks for this video! Very educational and entertaining. My friends and I have regular, if not frequent, evenings where we meet together, enjoy a fine glass of scotch, a cigar, and good conversation. I've been convinced to shift from cigars to a pipe and I'm excited about doing so. I'm a big guy (6'4") and was wondering if you could recommend a particular "model" of pipe to suit?

  • @chazaran

Off hand, I'd say a half bent apple.A major issue here is how it fits your hand too. A comfortable pipe is used, an uncomfortable one ends up in a drawer. In the end, we all find the shape(s) we like. Not to give away an upcoming video on how to pick out a pipe," I am a frustrated six footer. I stopped at 5'7" but have long fingers so I prefer larger pipes..." Weight: the lighter, the better. Try it on (in your hand) before you buy it. Find what is comfortable for you.

    DHB

  • @Roux674 Thanks for your reply! I live in Christchurch, New Zealand and the majority of our tobacconists were located in the central city which is now inoperational following the February earthquake. So I'm trying to source a local shop outside of that area. But if I was to buy online where would you suggest?

  • @chazaran

Tell us what you need. We do have customers in your part of the globe and will be happy to help.

    DHB

  • @Roux674 Thanks! I've located one store just outside the city that has a small selection of pipes so I will have a look and see if there's anything I'd like as a starter. Good to know you do business in my end of the world! Do you have a catalogue I can browse?

  • @chazaran

We are in the process of re-building our web site and look forward to having it running in 2-3 weeks. It will be wider in product line than now. Wait just a little longer and we will be up and running.

    DHB

  • @Roux674 Thanks for your replies, David. I ended up checking out a tobacconist 40 minutes out of the city and he had a couple of pipes in stock so I brought a Peterson system standard (314) and so far it's been a good smoke - nice and dry. I've bought a straight pipe off a local auction website. It doesn't seem to be anything special - the only markings are "Winchester Deluxe" and "Imported Briar". What are your recomendations re: cleaning the pipe ready for use? Looking forward to a new video!

  • @chazaran

I clean used pipes with 91% alcohol and ream and clean pipe cleaners. Ream it back to the wood too and then break it in just like a new pipe. For outside care, a buffer is best. Your local tobacconist should have a buffer. You might slip them a couple of dollars for their polishing service. I don't recall the brand name on it, but if it is a pipe covered in varnish, sand it off. I did this once and it made a difference.

    Thanks-DHB P.S. Peterson's are always good.

  • @Roux674 Thanks again, David I've been using a friends youtube account as I haven't had my own (but I've just got that sorted as you can see). Will get that treatment sorted in the next couple of days. Notice your website is up and running, very nice. I've not been able to find a store in my area (possibly the whole damn country) that has a good selection of tobaccos. I'm trying to find places that ship internationally. Do you know of any? I havent heard back from Boswells yet.

  • @TheoGeekNZ

Yes, we ship internationally all the time. I think we still have a couple of bugs in our web site, so just give us a call at 651-489-7504, we are happy to help.

    Thanks

  • Very informative, as a novice pipe smoker (been smoking for about a year now) I found this very helpful. If I ever find myself in St. Paul I will be sure to stop buy your shop.

  • You don't have to put the pipe out do you?

  • @virginiatechfanx

Pipes go out by themselves so just put it down in a place where it will not start a fire. After it is out, if you are not going to re-light it, remove the dottle (the unburned portion of tobacco in the bottom of the chamber, the "Heel")to prevent the pipe from going sour. To re-light: tamp first, then re-light. Don't leave tobacco, burned or not in the pipe.

    DHB

  • 'As long as you have a pipe in your hand, people will believe everything you say.'

    What a wonderful maxim.

I would also add that as long as you are smoking a pipe, you can pause for as long as you like and people WILL continue listening.

  • @fodsaks

Great addition! I'm going to try it immediately! ( I wonder if it works on politicians...)

    DHB

  • I really enjoyed watching this video. I turn 18 in a month or so and I wanted to kick it off with buying and smoking a pipe. Me and my father always sit outside on the porch at night and talk. He always smokes a Cuban cigar and now I will be sitting next to him smoking a pipe. I truly think this will bring us closer. Thanks so much for putting these videos up. -Demetrius

  • @demet199

Thank you for your kind message. Good luck and good conversation!

    DHB

  • Really nicely done, Sir! I have enjoyed your style and learned a great deal about hot to smoke a pipe. For some strange reason I completely trust every word that you say... that is unusual for me and I'm not quite certain why this should be so... (Grin)

  • Wish I could find that lighter, I can't seem to find it.

  • @noelnkeith

Give us a call at 651-489-7504-we have them all the time.

    Thanks

    DHB

  • they will believe anything you say! i love it, great video sir

  • Great video! You had the pipe in your hands the whole time, so I HAVE to believe EVERYTHING you have said through this entire video!

  • @timdelvecchio

Thanks. I'll try it on my Congressman and Senators next.

    DHB

  • Croatia. Hi, you just made me more interested in smoking the pipe, as i hate inhaling it

    Cheers :)

  • A terrible blunder has been made and some cigarette tobacco has been smoked in my pipe. It now reeks of that horrible, toxic ciggie smell.

Are there any tips on how to get rid of this, or is it just a case of gradually overpower it with aromatic pipe tobacco over the course of time?

    All advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • @fodsaks

There is no lasting damage. You may wish to lightly ream out the chamber, but just smoking it with pipe tobacco will banish the problem quickly. You should see some of the pipes I have restored where people have smoked pot through them. What a mess.

    DHB

  • wow you remind me exactly of my grandfather, and that's a great thing! haha especially the end part the joke it truly makes me happy :) he is a wise old man who is blind well anyway thanks for the video!

  • thanks for the videos, i've been smoking pipes off and on for about 3 years now.

aside from not drinking, do you have any tips for smoking a pipe while drinking beer?

i've found it gives me terrible tongue bite and is just not pleasurable. i find myself smoking cigarettes when i drink.

  • @genericsoul It sounds to me like you have a classic case of DRAGON MOUTH, a dreaded situation. Slow down puffing, long easy draws. Make sure the pipe is clean. Choose a mild cavendish tobacco, something "soft." Move the pipe around to several different positions while puffing. Mainly, I think that slowing down will cure the problem.

    DHB

  • I'm 18, and I'm thinking of picking up pipe smoking. I'm not into the unhealthyness of cigarettes, and I don't like the incapacitating effects of marijuana and alcohol. I've never smoked , but I want something to help me relax and focus that is not a pill. I'm very contemplative and pipe smoking seems like a contemplative hobby. I guess my main worry is the negative image and health effects. Can someone who was once conflicted on deciding to start pipe smoking tell me their opinion please

  • @Gright

Pipe tobacco is an adult product and is to be used in proper moderation. We pipe smokers are a contemplative group. Do not inhale. Look up the 1964 Surgeon General's report ( also C. Everett Koop's Reports) on pipe smoking. Suprise! Pipe smokers have a quiet dignified calming presence. It

is on the rise, too. We are helping more and more college aged people with their first pipe. In an age of political repression, we pipe smokers remain a fortress of relaxed, thoughtful sanity.

    DHB

  • @Roux674

I foudn out one of my close friends who recently turned 18 has started pipe smoking. He's quite brilliant, homeschooled and self taught. He knows vast amounts of information about business, politics, and economics. He helped me with pipe selection and I've loved it. It is quite relaxing, and I think I'll be using it a lot while I study in colege.

  • Nice vid :)

    Thx for the tips

  • what kind of watch are you wearing?

  • @jeff The watch is a 20 + year old Wittnauer TTC longlife. It is on it's second battery (that I know)

It is now exactly 11:53 AM.

    DHB

  • Where are the new videos?! You present in such a great and informative manner that your videos are a pleasure to watch. I am a new pipe smoker and look forward to getting started off right! Wish I lived near a good tobacconist. Keep the videos coming!

  • Got a good chuckle out of the joke at the end lol. Thanks for the video, I've spent the night reading about it but not seen any detailed videos (ie, with closeups, or how to clean it, etc) this has helped a lot.

  • I am def about to take up pipe smokin. This will help. Im gettin a lord of the rings style pipe.

  • Ever man I ever met, who smokes a pipe has either a beard or mustache, does the length and thickness of said facial hair have any positive effect on the tobacco's taste. I find that when I shave and smoke my Bruyere the tobacco looses its spice and thickness

  • What he said at the end... totally true!

  • You said you don't inhale like a cigarette, can you still feel the tobacco buzz though?

  • @404XEEN

Nicotine, like caffeine in coffee , does nothing for the flavor of pipe tobacco. Its simply there.

  • Great and insightful video. Please make more pipe videos for novices like me!!!!

  • This man is truly my hero

  • This was very informative. Thank you

  • I love it - "As long as you have a pipe, everyone will believe everything you say. Don't abuse the power"

    Great vid, thanks.

  • Hello David, really enjoyed your video and very informative. I'm 24 years old and interested in taking up pipe smoking and went to a local shop to get assistance and found little to no help beyond "You just need to try it". One of my most basic questions would be what you need to begin smoking (which I think you cover in your first pipe video) and also beginner pipe selection. I ordered a corncob mainly because I just simply like the idea, and also the price was fair, any suggestions?

  • Nice video, I'm looking to revisit pipe smoking. Need to restore my pipe though.

    Thanks for the tips

  • Hello David.

Thank you for your "How to" video. And for the humor.

And here is a really beginner question. Do you inhalant the smoke into your lungs (just like a cigarette) or you just enjoy the flavor in your mouth, and simply puff the smoke out?

I'm 20 years old, and found my grandpas old pipe. And I enjoy the taste of the tobacco, but not really into the "lung inhalation" process because of the health issues.

    Cheers from Croatia.

  • @kristijanog

To enjoy a pipe fully, do not inhale. The taste buds are on your tongue not in your lungs. This is one of the main things that seperates us from cigarette smokers.

    Thanks

    DHB

  • @kristijanog

    To Kilgore482

Computer problem, so I'll answer here. Yes, we are going to return to pipes & Tobaccos as soon as we finish part 3 of cigars. Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Its nice that pipe smoking is coming back. Its so much more dignified than a ciggerate

  • I had no idea this shop was in Minnesota! No more cheap smoke shops for me, I'll be by soon!

  • Is there a way to not burn your tongue? I tend to burn it ever time I light up and can't smoke for weeks after that.

  • @MRCAB

It sounds like you are smoking it way too fast. Measured and deliberate puffs work best. And remember: slow way down! 2) Check your tobacco. Is it dry? Is it a sugar based drugstore blend ? Try a vanilla-cased Virginia . Relax, take it easy and slow down. And, of course, Enjoy!

  • @JRFandCo I kind of assumed that's what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the tip; and yes, I will enjoy!

  • this is the video that taught me how to smoke a pipe, and really got me started on my favorite hobby 2 years ago, thanks!

  • What kind of tobacco are you smoking in this video?

  • @Driftstage5

This is an uncased (unflavored) flake cut Virginia, pressed into cake form, then sliced. Before smoking, I rub it out. It is a part of our regular line called Virginia slices.Nice nose too.
