Yeah the producers were in on it. I was watching this live when it happened back then, & having been in the production end of television here locally, i know that had Andy messed up the sketch that way unexpectedly they would not have rushed the set & ganged up on him to get him off of it. They would simply have just cut to commercial & PSAs as long as it took to restore order. This was indeed set up.

Kaufman was NOT an acting or comedic genius! Just a bad actor who made up stupid circumstances that people thought were real. Easy to do, but he did get a lot of money for it.
I think EVERYTHING Andy did was an act. He was the consumate actor - ALWAYS a characer. Kind of like how Peter Sellers used to adopt a character the whole time he was shooting a movie...he LIVED the part. Watch the appology he gave on a very early Letterman clip, and you can see just how BRILLIANT Andy Kaufman was. (And, still is to this day, if I might be so bold as to say)
if the producers werent in on it they would have really thrown him out and not kept him there for that joke at the end where they pretend to throw him out. also just before the break they pretend to be arguing and pushing then all stop as soon as the music starts and leave the stage. of course Kramer and the other actors didnt participate in that and Kramer left before anyone looking pissed.
I believe that this is beyond strange and ANDY! I love how I do the exact thing all the time, but if I was to do this in front of people on live TV, many may call me a thief. Only him would do the childish things and make it just a beautiful thing (:
indeed you are right. Mr.Richards admitted it on the special "A comedy salute to andy kaufman." It was just him, andy and the one producer in on the gag.
@dangerouslytalented It was Jack Burns, who was a co-producer on the show and also in on the joke. Burns had a long career in comedy, including partnering with George Carlin when both were quite young.
It's stupid to say that he had multiple personality disorder and that this was an example of it. People who really have multiple personality disorder do not have this much control over it.
Wasn't there a moment when they came back from break where Andy , instead of telling the audience it was a gag , told them that it was real and that ABC was forcing him to lie and say it was a gag? LOL. Wheres that part?
smoking in a public place and on TV and indoors its art so its ok lol

I havent seen anyone else state this point.....but the audience reactions probably were one reason this show lasted as long as it did....
mrdave777 2 months ago
I can't believe anyone would fall for that. So obviously not real.

Andy knew the show sucked and he went on there to create a train wreck on live television.

Richards was in on it. See how the camera cuts to follow him. I think it's possible the women were taken by surprise.

@A2Z83 You're right. The guy Carlin is fighting with as they go to commercial is co-producer Jack Burns, who was in on the joke.

Andy Kaufman made a poorly written, forgettable sketch in to one of the most memorable moments in television history.
bttfnut89 1 year ago
he needed to do this to make his more famous breakdown seem believable. guy was a genius.

I think Richards was in on it only because Andy threw the water on him.

This is clearly a set up all around. A great gag for the time though.

Wasnt Zmuda the producer he fought?

no, Bob Zmuda isn't that old.
YouDickwod 2 years ago
He was the same age as Kaufman... roughly.
In Man on the Moon, the producer Carrey fought with was Zmuda.

@kolst8406 He also played "Warren" on the Andy Griffith show.

@junedeon Yes. He didn't last very long on that show, although, in his defense, it would have been hard for anyone to replace Don Knotts.

its a real lame premise and i see why he bungled it in the middle as it was so lame he couldnt act it. and just went off script and role.
