Saw him tonight with his band in NY and they rocked the house beyond belief! He hit all the high notes, and even said he surprised himself! Great variety, acoustic, jamming, rocking out. Totally awesome!
" W hen you're doin it for the audience you're the monkees or grand funk railroad " lol awesome ! Stills was on a howard Stern show and the posts on the show afterward were brutal, about Stillls inability to sing, his attitude, fuck them what he has accomplished will stand he' is great!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Esteban, and his banjo. The depth this man pulls from, is what gives us all a glimpse of his personal strength, his willingness to cut the crap and offer his opinion, and incorporating it into our lives...commitment to excellence..that's we always expect from him. I loved him then, love him now. Wherever he is, I wish him well. on an off day, he is better then anything out there..as the man said It's in everybody and he brings it to us, on a platter. A certain amount of magic.
No matter what CSN or CSNY did.. for me it was always his solo recordings and that Manassas record.. you know which one! As for his personal demons.. well it's a hard life to do what he has done and during the epoch where he was most famous. He's one tough sob, and a first rate musician and artist. Love ya' Stephen!
This man is one of the most underated songwriters of his generation. He is, and was, GREAT! Not everybody is a great humanitarian, or wonderful person to be around. He is a great artist. Give his music an honest, objective listen and you'll see that he is "up from the people" long before Mellancamp and others. He's a real artist. He's one of the greatest.
6:11 For the sake of the audience? The Monkees? He got Peter Tork the job. For the sake of the audience didnt bother Stills too bad when they were all freeloading off Peter Tork. Running up and down Laurel Canyon in Peter Torks GTO. For the sake of the audience for the sake of the art.
I love when his southern accent comes out, he was so cute then. Too bad he got so fat. He and Don Felder (Eagles guitarist) knew each other well in Florida when they were young. Stills said in his R&R Hall of Fame speech that he considered Felder one of his top 4 guitar players.
Listen to "Just Roll Tape" the 1968 demo that reveals the genius behind CSNY, here is a guy who paid the dues..
Stills is why I play music, and check out Ray LaMontagne, he had a God moment when he came to the same conclusion listening to Stills and has made a nice career out of it..
This is possibly the best glimpse into the real deal as you ever will hear, no bullshit, candid honesty. Always loved Still's solo stuff the most, I admire him more than ever today. R & R is a strange life. Fame isn't all it's cracked up to be. He has always been a great artist, so glad he wasn't a monkee, we would have missed a lot of great music. Old times, Good times.
I feel like this has been cut apart to make Stills look ridiculous towards the end of the studio session, and over animated because of the camera close up angle.
They make it appear that Stephen is going off on some crazy philosophical rants or something when in fact it's been cut apart there so we don't really know what the context of what he was saying is.
I have met him twice once in Northridge California and at the Greek theater on L.A. He was so wonderful and if you come on my facebook Jackie watkns you can se a photo of us together Go to see it and join me as my friend so we can chat. Cheers
No doubt that he had talent. I have enjoyed his music and voice. I just thought that he was a little too in to himself. He has had a very fascinating life.
I think he just knows a thing or 2. I only realised what he said about art last year, and I was proud of my revelation! He is quite an odd guy. Fascinating.
A big reason that nowadays Stills can be hard to understand is because he has suffered a MARKED loss of hearing in BOTH ears..wears TWO hearing aids nowadays. He also suffers discomfort from dental implants. Both conditions can make him difficult to understand at times.
I didn't know him, I met him, I worked construction with a guy that used to be a roadie for Stephen. I used to idolize him, Stephen ( don't ever call him Steve) admits he was hard on the coke for a long time, I think he just fried his nerves
I met him and his band, he treated me and everyone else like they were pieces of shit. his drummer Joe Vitale and his bassist Kenny Passarelli were great, they talked to me for 10 to 15 minutes, couldn't have been more kind to the fans that came up to them. You have got to remember though that Stills was a heavy coke addict, to even have survived such a lifestyle is amazing, I think he is just fried and has a low tolerance level these days.
ok. was that recently? i must admit there are clips on here of him talking and he has a very different vibe from the clips of him talking in the 70s...i almost don't recognise him-physically and the'energy' which is disconcerting. and his voice has changed tremendously also
it was in Portland in 2007 at the back of the theater, where the band (minus Stills) hung out at intermission and after. Kenny Passarelli said you are seeing Stephan in a good place now. but that seemed to also imply that he hadn't been in a good place previously, if that was psychically psychologically or both I don't know. Kenny also said Stills hated to rehearse and Kenny was sent a CD of the concert they were going to play so he could practice before the tour.
I have met and talked to Stills twice. BOTH occasions he was friendly and in NO way was "a real asshole". Considering that the second time I spoke to him he was in terrible pain from a torn knee ligament he showed ALOT of tolerance:both for his injury and his fans who came pushing onto him before and after the concert. He even admonished a guard who tried to block a fan from approaching him, telling the guard:"DON'T EVER treat a fan of mine like that ever again! I WILL NOT tolerate it!"
I can sympathize with your experience with Stills and am aware that mine doesn't change what happened to you. I do know that I too have had VERY unpleasant encounters with celebs whom I had previously heard only nice things about (Jules Shear, Neil Finn, etc.). As you say, a person normally judges another almost entirely from THEIR OWN personal experience..that's only human and your prerogative.
Actually, I heard that he was quite sober but had been awake and in studio when this interview was done-working away with the band for WAAAY too many hours..minus coke. He is just VERY tired here, but still managed to give a wonderful and insightful interview nonetheless.
I'm glad to hear his sounding good thanks for letting me know Aoeria!

High opinion of himself.
monradtouhy1 2 years ago
A lot of it justified, but Stills did not suffer from false modesty, and he was easily 50% of the group temperament of CSNY.

I saw a recent interview with him and it is fairly obvious that drugs has impacted him. He's not very understandable.

@damagedangel08 Plus he's had two strokes in his life time...

@monradtouhy1 He has a current speech impediment due to a recent stroke.
I don't rule out the impact of drugs on his health; the stroke or the prostate cancer.
He is sharp as a tack in this extended interview. Leaves you a bit sad.
