Sorry Kids, Were Fucked In Ontario, Its Over! The true cost of nuclear is not even in yet, when its time to cleanup a plant that retires, our hydro bills will jump again, maybe double!! Forget new nuclear, want to pay a $1000 bill to keep your lights on! Green is killing us money wise as well, Cheap Green Hydro is just a Dream! A $1000 bill for home hydro is not just a bad dream, its could happen here! Sorry, Cheap Power Still = Coal!
reliable - 40 years of nuclear in Canada. Is supposed to be so super scary evil dangerous. Yet, how come nobody got killed yet? Pickering, being a first of a kind, historically has had quite poor performance. But Bruce units avg over 85% and Darlington is constantly in 90s. Nuclear is consistently available whenever needed.
Yet, I'm against more nuclear, (or more wind). Why? We have HUGE surplus of capacity. And with conservation gaining ground or demand will fall further.
affordable - if nuclear is NOT affordable how come we only pay 5-6c/kwH? On hot days Ontario uses 20 GW of power. Nuclear constantly provides 10 GW. In day 50% of power is nuclear, at night it goes up to 80%. At night, wholesale prices are 1c/kwH or even less.
clean - yes. ever see smog around nuclear power stations in France or Japan.. dont think so. Waste - blow out of proportion. 50-100 tons of spent fuel/reactor/year.
I think I'm going to be a lot less worried about that than the millions of tons of garbage in landfills (including heavy metals and dioxins).
