Is it just me or is it not a tad dangerous to hide a cache on the very edge of a fast moving road/motorway. Not only is it dangerous to the people hunting as they are not aware of its location like you, but it also a distraction to drivers seeing adults and possibly children searching the area?
Fun idea, but specialized and not for everyone. I do not usually carry a netbook in my caching kit as my runs are mostly hikes and bike rides. If I did decide to look for one of these, I would boot into linux before inserting a strange media device.
My concern with it is it would for me anyway...annoy...the crap out of me. I dont go looking around with a laptop in my bag. So I find the Cache and bugger its a usb drive. Sod it wasted my time would be my feelings here with this one.
Hello Geocachespoilers. Boy, have I had a weird 24 hours with this cache. I posted one similar to this in Canada, noting explicitly to the reviewer that it was a USB logbook. It was published. Within 4 hours of the FTF this morning, the reviewer archived it.
A follow-up: I was told that the cache was denied because of the Listing Guidelines in part 1.2 which state:
"In the interest of file security, caches that require the installing or running of data and/or executables will likely not be published. The use of memory sticks and similar devices is not permitted either."
I don't know if your local reviewer is as diligent as mine, but I suspect you'll have issues getting this one approved on the popular geocaching website you use. Good luck!
Fantastic idea. I just placed one just like this in Moncton, Canada based on your video. Your videos have been inspiring me to place some creative hides. Keep it up!
I thnik the USB Device will have problems with temperatures in our region. I don't think it will stay long, at -15 to -20 °C. On the other hand I would not put it in my laptop anyway.
I would really like to learn how to do this one it woud really get people on my town confused cause they don't see things like this. Please help me to lean hoe to do this I think it is Great!
Very nice that you acknowledged the potential risks of this type of creative cache. I love the idea of it, as much as I love how beat up your laptop is! "Well loved"
Nice, but I guess I woudn't log because I wouldn't use such a memory stick with my own PC. Does the listing say that you have to take a laptop with you?
Has this cache been published on the popular geocaching website? I read that USB Sticks were not allowed unless there is at least a alternative paper logbook.
great idea, but does the description say "You need a laptop"? or does it just say "You need a special tool". Because a special tool could be anything :)
I've done this already with CD's (It was a multistep) :D I put 3 disk in a container for desktop users. But the final was one disk. I highly recommend you use "TrueCrypt" to GUARD the flash-drive. It will require a password to access! (Block muggles out, protect from viruses!)
oh comeon! it looks cool but it's not really convenient - a paper logbook could be read/signed by any geocacher, while with this you imply a requirement for a USB-port equiped reading device. you should definitelly put a "bring a laptop" requirement on the cache page at geocache dot_ com. aside of this the idea could be badly exploited, as someone could copy pr0n files and guess who's guilty - the cache owner! then go and prove you're not. put a disclaimer as well, if it helps anyway. too risky
Yea I would be worried about viruses, there are some real a**holes out there that would do that. Otherwise a good idea, I think I have an old USB stick lying around somewhere, might try it out. Hmmm laptop in the field, not usually what I bring along on caching trips, could there be a problem with people taking it home to put in their home computer and while they're doing that someone else can't find it?
can one not simply scan the drive for viruses before opening any files or interfaces?
