It comes down to this: Mungo Jerry created a song that appealed to the masses- it has become a standard. Shaggy recognized the greatness of the song and created his own versions. I may like Shaggy's versions better, but great music like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. No matter whose version you like, we all like this song and we all like music.

To bring race into this makes no sense at all. Rock and Roll would not exist without the combined contributions from all peoples.

First of all, African American music formed the basis of the blues. Rock and roll would not exist without the blues. In the Summertime is basically a variation of 12 bar blues. So many rock songs by "whites" owe their existence to "blacks". But It really has nothing to do with race. There are artists of all races who have no talent, who scream and/or who profit on the works of others.
