i was wondering if you could explain what pattern change is, why do they do that and whats it for? can you show more of this transmitter site, thank you for posting your video, i liked it and enjoy anything to do with radio or tv towers and transmitters on youtube,,,,,,,,,i find it interesting
Pattern Change is for AM stations only. Most have to lower power and become directional or more directional to protect other stations on their frequency at night.
During night time hours the E layer of the earth's ionosphere appears, reflecting distant AM stations via "skywave" reception. Stations must change power and directional patterns at night to accommodate nighttime sky wave propagation,
@ednixon ok i appeciate your explaination of the pattern change, i have one more question,,, what happens if you do not do the pattern change? will your station signal go further then its supposed to or what?? reason i ask is i live in texas and i can hear a AM station coming from Cuba on AM 530 they call it LaCity,
i have found that station broadcasting also on the internet, do you think they are not doing the pattern change and thats why we hear it in texas loud and clear at night
Yes, if power is not lowered at night and stations do not change to directional patterns they will go farther, and will cause interference to other stations on that frequency.
530 is rather unusual, there is one in Canada, none that I know of in the USA, where the AM band allocations start at 540 and extend to 1710. Since there are no other 530KHz US stationyou get good reception without interference from IRCA Radio Cadena Habana.
Similarly, KTRH 740 in Houston can be heard in Cuba.
@ednixon thanks for that good explaination, and i would not doubt it for the least that ktrh 740 am houston could be heard in cuba or anyplace in the world because during the hurricane i went up to east texas just over 250 miles from here and could hear ktrh just like if i was still in the houston area, thanks for your answers and i will be watching your channel to see more videos of your radio station ,maybe a transmitter site tour, thanks a million i enjoyed it,
US stations that fail to change pattern when required to do so are subject to large FCC fines if reported. Usually the stations suffering will report the station that fails to change pattern. Most all are automated to avoid large FCC fines for non compliance with pattern change rules.
