What a beautiful voice and mesmerizing rendition of Red Red Rose! So simple and pure in quality. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with some people calling her insecure. She may have been shy but to her credit she stood in front of live audiences and sang her songs which is more than I can say for any of us. I would say humble is a better description and that is why she sings so beautifully.
so little you people know about Eva. She was the most popular singer in Washington.DC and recieved numerious awards from local music associations. shows were done in front of sell out crows at one of the most popular night spots in DC Her remarks were made "are you people still awake" because she just didn't know what else to say.
What an absolute perfect version of my most favourite of Scottish Songs! She may not be Scottish but she is certainly a bonnie lass and i'm sure there just has to be a wee bit of Scottish blood somewhere there with a voice like hers! I know she is up there now with the famous bard Rabbie Burns singing to him and all of heaven :)
She was very shy, and really lacking in confidence when performing and it shows. She never knew how much her talent could mezmerize people and probably took this awe and wonder as being boredom by her audience. If only she was alive today to see how the world appreciates her special gift. Her family must be eternally saddened that this precious talent was snuffed out in its prime
Seventh generation Scottish here and also very proud of it.. Still pipers in the family and we do celebrate that tradition. Linda Dairzel Dundee Park Maine
Some people need the radio or tv to tell them when something is good I don't I stopped listening to the radio it's full of crap I can hear anything I want to on here.
At the time Eva died TV Radio always played Over the rainbow with their news clips, I did think much of myself and wondered what all the fuss was about. It was not untill
I started using youtube and clicked on Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain and was really taken back,It brought tears to my eyes partly a mix of emotion of the beauty of this song but also that she had gone. America never realised what a treasure they had untill it was too late. Britain made up for it.
@ianwalkerdownland I'm American but I'd never heard of Eva until Dave Marish did a tribute piece about her on a news show called "Nightline". Shame on those American media moguls who didn't give Eva airplay here. I usually listen to a classical station but traditional pieces such as this might have made it on there as well.
A truly beautiful and magical voice. Thanks for posting this lovely recording, she sounds just as wonderful in a live recording as she does in a studio.
I notice that she asks if people are still awake in a couple different videos. The one flaw I can find with Eva is that she never learned the difference between people sleeping and people being mesmerized.
@bergerfry I don't think I quite agree with you. At the time when Eva made these remarks, people did not realize how great a singer she was & therefore did not pay much attention to her performances. She had very small audiences & earned very little money(really very little) from her singing. In retrospect & now(in the present) everyone in the world realizes how great a singer she was.
I agree, it's amazing itsn't it, how the world now realises just how special she was, and yet she went for so long without being discovered. such a tragic loss, her music and her voice are amazing.
@Joner888 , you are so correct, have read her biography, and due to her lack of confidence, she always thought people didn't like her performances..if only she know
@Joner888 Sorry - I think you're incorrect. Nobody could possibly have heard/SEEN this - and not felt in the presence of The Divine.
Everyone I know who has ever heard her sing has gone on to listen to everything else they could find. I can't imagine what it must have been like to go out for dinner, see some blonde chick with a guitar and then have THIS happen?!
"Mesmerized" indeed!
Must also remember she was PAINFULLY shy and very insecure -- this is where the "awake" is born IMHO
@bergerfry Read that Eva played at Pearls regularly (anybody know the address?) Played at Treaty of Paris in Annapolis too. Folks came to eat rather than listen, so perhaps lack of appreciation frustrated Eva a bit? Nevertheless Eva never sought out fame in her lifetime and was painfully shy on stage at times. I live nearby. Today CDs are stocked locally but she is barely known by 10% of the local population here even though she is IMHO the most (only?) famous person from her home town by far!
@bergerfry Unfortunately her audience was more likely mesmerized by the food in front of them at the time. I too can't believe she could sing like this night anfter night with only a handful of regular friends to appreciate her. They came to Pearls just to listen and support her.
How did you get hold of these recordings? I would love to hear her live at pearls songs. I contacted her family, concerning if they were ever going to make an album of the songs. They said that they would love to and have wanted to for a while, but the record company refused it. I can't believe it!
She can reach way down deep and awake feelings that that you haven't felt for a long time. I'm an old man, and I cry like a baby when I hear this lady sing. She left before she was finished.
I'm betting they were hypnotized Eva. I would have been. I wonder how many of these folks realized at the time what true greatness they were witnessing?
@MrJohnLotus the reason she was never more known. She did so much different stuff. Adult Contemporary, Folk, and old stuff. Record companies like stuff that fits neatly into format. Why? Because radio stations are formatted. You have country stations, classic rock stations, top 40 stations, hip hop and rap stations, oldies stations, etc. A great song though and I never get tired of listening to her. I can understand why she never got signed but I think they missed out.
Listening to this angel is both pleasure and pain. The pleasure of her voice, extraordinary passion, intutition and delivery;.. and pain that she is gone and we will never hear her live, or be able to express our gratitude to her for touching our hearts. We are blessed that she recorded so many songs. Beautiful Angel.
By the time I've heard her mellowed voice she already passed away, so I burst in tears cause I knew that I am not gonna see her forever ever and that's the most touches my fragile heart. If I have the choice only one choice that would be grandted by any means I would bring her back.
How this song (and especially when sung by Eva) makes my Scottish heritage come to life. I see my long gone father and his father who were so proud of Scotland. Even though I'm advanced in age myself, the tears flow and my heart feels the emotional strain for a homeland I never knew but can't forget. Peter AIKMAN
You are not alone in the respect,Burns was such a wonderful poet akin to the old bards of Ireland and the wandering scholars teaching in the hedgerows.
Perhaps sometimes God allows only the very few to savor true brilliance and the genius of one such as Eva in a live situation. Yes we humans can't fathom why a talent such as this didn't get the deserved rewards whilst on this earthly plane.
It will forever remain a mystery to us, this thing about life being unfair, won't it?
I'm just forever grateful to Joner and the others who have posted this beautiful Angel for our listening pleasure. She is now singing in God's choir. My Heart thanks you!
She didn't want to sign a limiting recording contract...So her artistry stayed alive...and we are now blessed because she stayed TRUE to her art. How rare such a diamond is...!! I love her as though she was a dear friend.
Oh my, she sounds as shy as they say that she was! But still as endearing as ever. I like that; humble, unpretentious, fresh style, defiance of musical typecasting, and just an endearing, lovely soul.
You are much missed, Lady Eva. You're now singing with your fellow angels.
Also have a listen to the Eddi Reader version. She's a true Scot like Robert Burns himself. Also listen to her new tune 'Love is the way'.. truly sublime.

Eva is one of the greatest singers of all time,I love her. But for the definitive version of this song check out The Fureys and Davey Arthur version.Fantastic!!
sometimes Angels just have so much voice and heart....they can't be contained in a human voice or body...so God takes them home....and gives them wings 2 sing on high! and it rains, cause all the rest of the angels r crying tears of joy that another angel has joined them 2 sing!
Amazing lady...amazing voice, just like my mum. A great talent who died to early. My mum sang this beautiful song at my grandmothers funeral and did it great justice, and now everytime I hear this amazing voice with the powerful lyrics of this poem in song I thank god for such a wonderful mum who sadly passed away feb 08' R.I.P xxxxxx
Is this on any of her released albums? I think I have 4, but never heard this one before. Every song she sang turned into something even more wonderful..
For sihotech, yes, this song is on Eva's recently released album, Somewhere, no 2 on the CD list. This album, by the way, is very good containing many other beautiful songs such as Coat of Many Colors, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.
There are so many wonderful colours in her voice and an aching longing, like she's reaching for something.. and we go on the journey with her. Her open tuning on the guitar gives the song a very distinctive flavour, a kind of post celtic jazz all of her own
Not sure what you're saying about open tuning. I'm not aware that she ever used anything other than the normal tuning on her guitar. In this piece, she's using the open G chord position with the guitar capoed up two frets (although the recording is a little off-key, it sounds like she was playing in the key of A).
I think to be fair, Eva's version is better than Eddi's but Eddi's version of "Ae Fond Kiss" is just as beautiful. You will not find other songs than these that so accurately capture the aching and sadness of a lost love.
I am Scottish and think that Eddi R sings Scottish songs like an American...It's never REAL for me. I think she has a good voice but not for trad music it's too OTT. Eva always has such a natural beauty in her singing she doesn't have to try!
Despite already having Eva sing this lovely Burns song recorded live at the King of France Tavern located at the Maryland Inn in the winter of 1995 as the second track on her new album 'Somewhere ' I think this alternative version justifies her 'Live At Pearls ' album be released next. Please sit up and take note Blix Street Records. I agree with the comment about her excellent guitar playing on this song. Anyone in the UK who hasn't seen the tribute musical which is currently touring,do so !
It seems I'm a bit over sensitive. When Eva says: "is everybody still awake", I start blubbering like a school girl. Then she starts singing and I am reduced to tears. Make fun of me if you wish but I hear the the voice of an angel.
Her self-deprecatory remark is very sad not only because there sounds to be only a handful people in the audience, but that her performance is also delighting a world-wide audience here some 14 years later.
For those who do not know, this beautiful song is now on the just released, and highly reccommended, new Eva Cassidy CD, "Somewhere". Also, Just a reminder, that Eva was also a wonderful guitar player, as proven by her awesome finger picking on this song.
Jelena, I remember winter in Belrage. Your fresh cheek on my lips. The tree limbs laden plump with heaven's frosty dressing; as dogs lay in doorways, contented by the gifts from soft Serbian hearts. I remember winter in Belgrade. Moja draga.
How unfair life is. How it can give and take in seconds. Eva's death was so premature and tragic, such a young talent with much more to offer. She never got to see her music played to audiences worldwide, but i hope she always knew it was good enough.
But we were just lucky whilst she was with us she produced amazing things like this for us to listen to.
What can I say - I'm a true blue blooded JOCK living in Jockland - a female Scot at that. BUT if I could think of one song and one version of that song to be played @ my passing then this beats any other version including any from my my own country, hands down. What a haunting voice. I thank you for posting this. If there is such a thing as peace - I hope she has it,
OMGosh, I just found this one:) Just beautiful My Beloved John was Scottish also! His Mom came over here from Scotland along with her Mom! I remember his Granny she was a SWEET SOUL MY BELOVED IS WITH HIS GRANNY NOW & me I can't wait! I will put this song into my favorites like many of her songs makes me cry I miss My Beloved soooo bad:( dj
Without a doubt, one of the most BEAUTIFUL voices I have ever heard !!! She's now singing with the WONDERFUL Skeeter Davis in the " GREAT CHOIR" up above. I just LOVE Eva to bits !!!
I was just despairing of John Barrowman's version of Red Red Rose when I found this! She really was an amazing talent and that was beautiful. I love this almost if not more than Eddie Reader and Karen Mathieson's versions!! Thanks so much for posting!
Sitting here in L.A. spellbound.....a wonderful lass named Marydoll in Scotland told me about Eva and Burns' wonderful poem.....what a magnificant combination......Scotland is magical and we all know it somewhere inside.
She does not get the credit she deserves and probably never will. But as long as those who love her music keeps it and plays it, it will live on. And who knows, future generations may appreiciate her more.
Fabulous news!!! On August 26 - A NEW Eva Cassidy CD will be released, with 12 songs, including Red Red Rose~~.Check Google for the Eva Cassidy Website - to get all the information. The CD is called "Somewhere" for a song written by Eva. It will be awesome~ with a few songs never heard before. Counting the days! :)
Thank you so much somewherenw for posting that info. I am Scottish and my Fiance is a Kiwi. She desperately wants to have this song played at our wedding and now it looks like we will be able to. Brilliant news!
How sad that there were only very few there to hear her. How sad the place didn't just explode with clapping hands until the roof blew off. Eva had no idea of what a wonderful gift she had in her voice and guitar playing along with taking a great song and then preforming it in a very heart felt manor. If I do find out anything about a CD of this, I'll be sure to post here. Digging around on USA web sites there are some newer CDs that aren't known about to many yet.
wow, i never knew eva cassidy had recorded this. breathtaking performance, up there with 'danny boy'...she must have had a scottish soul (even if she said 'gong' instead of 'gang':)
this is one of the most beautiful love poems ever written any where in the world rabbie burns was a great talent in his short life, eva does him justice in her short span amongst us.
What a beautiful version of this poem by Robbie Burns. I don't think I've ever heard such a good version and I'm sure Robbie himself would be delighted with it.I also enjoyed her singing ' Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain ' from the same venue - Pearl's. Let us hope that Chris Biondo and Eva's parents agree for this gig to be released as a CD. I know her many fans would welcome this session .Let us petition to get it released as I want to hear what other beautiful songs were sung at this venue.
I was unaware that Eva recorded this beautiful Scottish poem (set to music ) by Robbie Burns. I am unaware of her performance at Pearl's so if anyone knows more about it please let me know. Hopefully this Live at Pearl's session will be released on CD by Chris Biondo at some stage. Please do so Chris - her millions of fans would be delighted. Pauline Mitchell Bristol UK
this is a real gifta Scottish song sung better by Eva than I have ever heard it sung by some of the finest singers of my country-magnificent, and etched with meaning in every line
Thanks, so much, Joner888,for posting this beautiful song, by the incomparable Eva Cassidy! I had never had the privilege of hearing it before! It is a treasure! Every Eva song is a true treasure! Thanks again!

You will not find other songs than these that so accurately capture the aching and sadness of a lost love.

eva is a great singer but sorry i have to say only a scottish lassie can sing a true burns song and ms reader does that xx

I am Scottish and think that Eddi R sings Scottish songs like an American...It's never REAL for me. I think she has a good voice but not for trad music it's too OTT. Eva always has such a natural beauty in her singing she doesn't have to try!

Got to love Eva Cassidy. She makes every song her own. RIP

Intense and clear voice!!!!! Touching music!! Perla.

It seems I'm a bit over sensitive. When Eva says: "is everybody still awake", I start blubbering like a school girl. Then she starts singing and I am reduced to tears. Make fun of me if you wish but I hear the the voice of an angel.

I totally agree with you!

I read that she wasn't just very shy,
but that she also had self-esteem problems.
Her self-deprecatory remark is very sad not only because there sounds to be only a handful people in the audience, but that her performance is also delighting a world-wide audience here some 14 years later.

wow, such intense emotion and a natural feeling for the text. I have newly discovered her, and find one incredibly gifted musician.

This is even more beautiful than the version on the new CD, which I wouldn't have thought was possible. Thanks for posting it!
I just did a video with the CD version that you may wish to check out. Not a lot of images of Eva available, but I did my best.
Again, this is a precious jewel of a performance. Please leave it up forever!

I was just despairing of John Barrowman's version of Red Red Rose when I found this! She really was an amazing talent and that was beautiful. I love this almost if not more than Eddie Reader and Karen Mathieson's versions!! Thanks so much for posting!

She does not get the credit she deserves and probably never will. But as long as those who love her music keeps it and plays it, it will live on. And who knows, future generations may appreiciate her more.

I know her many fans would welcome this session .Let us petition to get it released as I want to hear what other beautiful songs were sung at this venue.
nicefrog45 3 years ago 7
I was unaware that Eva recorded this beautiful Scottish poem (set to music ) by Robbie Burns. I am unaware of her performance at Pearl's so if anyone knows more about it please let me know. Hopefully this Live at Pearl's session will be released on CD by Chris Biondo at some stage. Please do so Chris - her millions of fans would be delighted. Pauline Mitchell Bristol UK
