I bought my first Everly Brothers record in 1958. I was 12 and taking guitar lessons...cut my musical teeth on their music. I still sing along but with a much more scratchy voice. We all may be getting old, but their music with that perfect harmony and great rhythm never gets old. Wouldn't it be great to see just one more live performance? Maybe another Homecoming. I could be there in two hours! We wouldn't complain if those well seasoned voices cracked a little. They're just right!
I think they made Paul very proud...they idolized Phil and Don ...and to have them sing one of his songs!! what a great accomplishment!!! BEATLES FOREVER!!!
A fabulous sound from two of the finest voices in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. Their 1968 album entitled "Roots" is one of my favorite EB recordings. Don and Phil have impacted the entire music scene since their arrival in the 50's.
i am 59 and i have loved the everly brothers since i was 12 in 1962. i agree that so many of their fans will miss them because of their retirement. but i understand.
I have the CD ON THE WINGS OF A NIGHTINGALE< it is a three in one CD also includes EB84 and BORN YEATERDAY and is my favorite CD of their later work after the 1983 reunion. THe 3 favorite songs of mine from this CD are Born Yesterday (written by Don), Brown Eyes written by Phil, and Always Drive A Cadillac by Larry Raspberry. Every true EB fan should try to get this CD. You will be amazed at their harmonies and natural born talent.
Yup, The Everly's are the best ever. My 33 year old daughter says "no one harmonizes like the Everly's do, too bad that today's stars can't harmonize like that!"
They use to appear in Vegas every year, but in 2001, they cancelled the tour and never picked it up again. I guess they retired from touring. I saw them in concert back then and they were just great. They are true godfathers of rock and roll.
I'm 33 and feel the same. I've been looking for any information on them going on tour again. I know their in their 60s but just would love to find some news on them. If anyone has any insight PLEASE POST! I would love to see them live!
Actually, I think they're 72 and 70 now, and nearing that age myself, I can understand if they don't want to tour. Too bad for their many fans, though.
Saw them in person - sat in the front row of the "Greek Theater" in LA, 1984, they were great! and looked so happy too! Don leaned down and asked me if the sound was OK. and it was. Thanks for this great recording. Dj
I saw them live late 60's - at a lounge in Miami by the airport - I felt happy to see them but, sad that they were reduced to this type of venue..
But, we all do what we have to.
Sir Paul -paid them his highest tribute by writing this beautiful song for them - EBs rule..
Great song - what are they up to today! I can still hear their voices from when I was a little one in the 50s riding in the back seat in my father's mercury woodie.
Still a great song. The Everlys make it seem magical. Small wonder McCartney wrote it - great song writer. Nobody ever did that "I can feel something happening" lift in that context before - makes it unique and special. the way
This song is perfect for the Everlys and its out of respect that Sir Paul wrote it for them. It fits in perfectly with their style and call-response set up of their greatest songs.
Yep!!and i'm proud to say that i had Don's guitar in my grubby little paws backstage at oxford that year.yr of the scratchplates) ne ver ever played such a grat guitar knocked spots off their old gibsons.pleased to say i managed to get one in 98
I agree with Waldo99. If the Everlys were not harmonizing on this song, I would soon tire of it. (Or someone of their calibar, but who would that be?) I am happy that it charted for them though.
Not to quibble too much, but: I LOVE these guys, but why did they ALWAYS wear tuxedos? That "look" worked very well for them at one time, but by the time they'd reunited and were promoting this awesome record, it might've helped them get more airplay if they'd dressed more like they did on the "EB '84" album cover. JMO.
McCartney's demo of this song has identical harmonies. Respect is due because he wrote an "everly brothers" song. You gotta love that Everly sound though. :)
With all due respect to Paul McCartney the Everly's harmonies are what make this song. The tune and lyrics are decent, but it is the Everly sound that makes the song.
I saw this 1985 tour (in Brighton) - with Albert and Pete Wingfield. I have to say that they sang the more modern songs better than their old hits, mainly because Don's voice seemed to have deepened over the years. "Nightingale" went down a storm. (The opening performer, by the way, was Ralph McTell).
Thats right, I saw them with Ralph at the Albert Hall in 85, Albert has played on every tour since the reunion, Pete has missed one or maybe two tours, don't forget that great Bass player Phil Cranham.
@heezabirddog oops, yes you are quite right, I saw them so many times, its hard to remember without looking up my collection of programs, In fact I saw them every time they came to england after the reunion, including the reunion, and three times before the split.
the opening act/perfomer in 85 (also in 84( was pat alger,mc tell was 87, the first time since the reunion in 83 that the ev's had been back to the albert hall.on key board in 85 was ian mc lagan of the faces
I love this song. I'm an old corny guy who still likes this stuff!
