I think it's easy to forget that the feminist movement only very (relatively) recently succeeded in granting females equal legal rights, and it was even more recently that society progressed its ideas about gender roles. For example, my mother (who is part of the Baby Boomer Generation) was never even encouraged to go to college, let alone supported financially. Her brother, on the other hand, was both encouraged and supported.

In a society built within a dominant-subordinate framework, the subordinates are usually said to be "unable" to perform the preferred roles that are so well-guarded by the dominants. The myth of their inability to fulfill more valued roles is challenged only when a drastic event disrupts the usual arrangements i.e in WW2 when "incompetent" women suddenly "manned" the factories with great skill.

I think it's easy to forget that the feminist movement only very (relatively) recently succeeded in granting females equal legal rights, and it was even more recently that society progressed its ideas about gender roles. For example, my mother (who is part of the Baby Boomer Generation) was never even encouraged to go to college, let alone supported financially. Her brother, on the other hand, was both encouraged and supported.

In a society built within a dominant-subordinate framework, the subordinates are usually said to be "unable" to perform the preferred roles that are so well-guarded by the dominants.
