Chris Cornell did a stripped down acoustic arrangement in 2007 for Carry On that David Cook modified and cut to 90 seconds in 2008 to fit the American Idol performance time allowed.

While the judges may have been clueless, Ryan Seacrest announced it as Chris Cornell's version. It was an excellently done tribute to both artists, IMO.

Just my opinion, I like Chris Cornell but he can't hold a damn candle to this performance of the song. The energy was off the hook, not to mention the power and pitch usage by David. He really brought the song to life right here! David knows what will rile up the crowd and he used his strong, high and steady pitch method all throughout that season of Idol. It's one of the main reasons he won. Good stuff, and very smart on his part.
