I usually dislike Gheorghiu, but I'm prepared to cut her some slack here, given her illness. And she actually does pretty well by this aria; it's better than her "Ore dolce e divine," I think. Still, Brenciu steals the show - he's brilliant!

"Wretched" is a big word. I can assure you if Gheorghiu is indeed a wretched soprano she'd never be on Met.

Thanks for the vid. So nice to see Marius Brenciu. I still remember his really good Alfredo in Bucharest in 2000/2001. Angela, sweet as always, even with a cold.

Despite the cold, she seemed to get stronger as the opera went on. It's just too bad that we were all waiting for this particular aria and were bound to be somewhat disappointed. Both tenors were great and Lisette was wonderful. I hope she didn't typecast herself.

Gelb came out before the performance and announced Gheorghiu was suffering from a cold and begged the audience's indulgence, so that explains why she is calculating her moves so carefully to have any voice by act III, I think--labored is a good word for it, but probably her best effort under the circumstances. The first act was a slow start for her and Alagna, but the Prunier and Lisette were excellent throughout to me.
