  • Excellent and soulful version. I've tried to buy your CD on CDBaby but I wasn't able to find out. Could you help me. Congratulations anyway for your vocal and musical talents.

  • VERY nicely done. Good job!

  • sung beautifully

  • Best version on You Tube! You should get lots of new views soon as House Carpenter tabs were just published in Acoustic Guitar's August issue.

  • great video. THanks for the tabs! Is this Scotch/Irish Bluegrass/mountain music?

  • im impressed :)

    i love this

  • what have you got to maintain me on

    what hills are those

  • "an anglo-saxon infestation since the anglo-scots wars."- the Angles were there well before the Vikings. Nicely put,by the way- loads of Scots in England, too. They "infest" English parliamentary constituencies, but we tolerate them because ,well, they're Jocks!

  • you do well enough at it. even for one who really doesn't get it.

  • As good as the Pentangle Version -

    Really great!!!

Beautiful voice - if you ever record a record send me a copy.

  • not quite. above average. but you'd go far to reach pentangle's heights.

  • @pfalky2k well thats sort of a dick comment. I think her voice is a perfect marriage with this song. Its smooth with just a hint of rasp.

If you're trying to learn a non-finger-picked version of this, its a great place to strat. Although the singer might be tough to compete with.

  • House Carpenter is an English or Scottish ballad from the sixteenth century. It's one of my favorite Child ballads.

"This ballad is also known as James Harris, or the Daemon Lover. It is Child Ballad #243." -Quote from the Francis J. Child Ballad website.

Great performance, Bob Dylan does a great version of this song (featured on The Bootleg Series)

  • And yet I am not convinced. Whilst there is some evidence to indicate the lyrics derive from a Scottish ballad (which doesn't necessarily imply Celtic) the music and usual style of singing of the song sounds more English to me, but I can find no solid evidence to support that (usually described as "origin unknown). This interests me.

    Do you have a reference?

  • if it is scottish, it's Celtic. in scotland, there have been the picts. then the Celts. a few norse incursions on the north east & an anglo-saxon infestation since the anglo-scots wars. but scotland IS a predominantly Celtic nation, as is ireland wales & cornwall. i always thought this song more english trad though. lacks the true Celtic feel of scots/irish trad tunes (listen to dubliners, chieftans, corries gaberlunzie for examples) pentangle has a bit of "fairport convention" feel about them.

  • What makes you say it is a Celtic song?

  • @albionrulesok

    Because it is.

  • Bellisima...the singer and the song...!!!

  • Thank you.

You sing an ancient song very beautifully.

    I'm moved.

  • i've been tryin to find the anthology version which i couldn't find so i decided to use your version which is very beautiful and so yours is included with the original versions until i find the original ....thanx

  • just wonderful..

  • You have a lovely voice! I love the chord progression, it sounds very warm and solemn.

  • A really nice version, it sounds there is a touch of Joan Baez in the arrangement of the vocals. Great voice. tt

  • Not depressing in the least bit. Actually very touching.

  • Did you actually listen to the lyrics...?

  • Obviously, and I still don't find it saddening to my ears. Then again you're talking to an odd girl.

  • I'll take your word for that.

  • This is a beautiful rendition bravo! :)

  • Brilliant! You've inspired me to do an acapella recording of Barbry Allen - a song my grandmother used to sing to me as a child. These songs are centuries old, but are still remarkably relevant. Well done.
