Unfortunately the peace treaty said the US had to get all troops out but said nothing about the thousands of NVA in So. VN. 2 years after that treaty was signed NV forces over ran Saigon. So in effect the US managed to get an outcome that favoured So. VN. NV broke that treaty. US could've invaded again - US gov lost the will.

I backpacked through all of Vietnam a few years ago. Some of the old battlefieds still have stuff laying around. I took a picture of an American boot stuck in the dirt. Picked up a few bullets off the ground. Found a few sandbags. War is hell. God bless those guys who fought over there.

The Marines also penetarted into the valley in Operation Dewey Canyon 1, I think, but may be wrong about the operation's name. There were also other actions in the Ashau.

Some of the action you all see is after its safe enough for camera guys to come take pics. The Dudes in the pics made it possible for those guys to do that. History to me tends to imply that if a nation wishes to do right with its people then the grounds for going to war ought to at least be honarable and not merely about liberating others of their property. I backpacked through all of Vietnam a few years ago. Some of the old battlefieds still have stuff laying around. I took a picture of an American boot stuck in the dirt. Picked up a few bullets off the ground. Found a few sandbags. War is hell. God bless those guys who fought over there.

I was there in 1969 in this battle- don't glorify this disaster. Hundreds killed and wounded for nothing - a stupid piece of ground given right back within a short time. Johnson and MacNamara played with soldiers lives like it was a game - Lives wasted on both sides. The US military did not lose this war - the media and our greedy government gave it away. I was one of a multitude of 19-20 year olds that grew old in a year while America played and forgot us.

@1769jongates I got there on May 1st of 1970 (3/187 Inf 101st), and there were still some "old guys" (ranging in age from 18 to 25) who had been to the A Shau Valley.

@BluezGuitarz I'm Vietnamese and both of my grandpas are from different sides... I grew up lost and confused about this war...at times i hated the american too for the atrocity they bring upon my land... but one thing that i realized as I grew older... it's better American and Freedom than the Communist scums ! who lies and deceit their people.. Today the Communist of Hanoi roamed the old Saigon and they are ruined everything with their corruptions and lies..

Secondly : I Would like to know What relation between MICKEY MOUSE and the US MARINES CORPS ? Or it's simply a fantasy imagination of Stanley Kubrick when he made the Film Full Metal Jacket.. There are many SPECIAL FORCES recruting VietNamese and Nung minority peoples, called MIKE FORCES, based in NHA TRANG...since 1965. And none called Mickey.

I have a neighbour friend died in ASHAU Battle of 1965. That is a great battle with only South-Vienamese forces (2000 soldiers). On 1965, the US Army Forces are not yet landing on the Center of South VietNam, nor fighting in ASHAU. In ASHAU border there are then, many battle over years. I'm mistake to talk about the giving-term "HAMBURGER hill".. I'M SORRY.

Going to disagree. Combat vet friends of mine, some of which are Army 11, and USMC 03 series MOSs are reenactors and Airsofters.

The Hamburger Hill battle happened in 1969.
There many battles fought in the Ashau Valley.
NOV 1965 was the year that the 1st Cav Div fought several pitched battles with the NVA notably at LZ Albany and LZ Xray.

Thank You vietnam vets for your unselfish devotion to my freedom,You went to a place that was far from your families and homes.You stood up against the v.c and the nva forgive me for not capitalizing the apprev. You were against a very determined and brutal enemy but you did what you had to do to make it back.I have nothing but respect and admiration for those who served and died for our freedom.I am only saddened by the response you were shown by the cowards who were to eager to protest.

(Not on 1969 as your title)

@SaigonCitizen, As others here have stated, this particular battle, that nicknamed 'Hamburger Hill' occurred in 1969. I knew some people there. The Marines also penetarted into the valley in Operation Dewey Canyon 1, I think, but may be wrong about the operation's name. There were also other actions in the Ashau.
