  • I tried to test Bakelite with Formula 409 and it didn't work.

  • @Ohio1TreasureHunter

Did you then try it with Simichrome? Usually if it doesn't test with 409, then it's not Bakelite. I've never had a test reply differently, when trying both 409 & Simichrome. With all the fakes going around, the hot water or friction test is the 100% way to test. The fakes circulating online, WILL pass the chemical test. They're that good at faking these pieces.

  • @godlesswickedvanian I have purchased some silverpolish and are more familiar with bakelite. Thanks:)

  • If the bakelite has been restored to its original color which is white on this bangle, this test will not work. Also people mistakenly call the material bakelite. It is actually catalin. Restoring the color to white can only be accomplished by sanding the surface which is something you would never do on a bangle.

  • Your video is VERY informative, I wish you would do more on other ways to test other products, or identifying antique or vintage designers, anything on jewelry!

Thanks for sharing and again A+.

  • I just bought a brand new bakelite reproduction guitar volume knob. The seller claims it is bakelite. But, I cannot tell for sure if this is true with the smell, sound and 409 methods. I have never smelled true bakelite before. Also, these pieces are brand new and totally white in color. So, I'm not sure if they've even had a chance to oxidize. Please help. Thank you.
