When commenting on performances, one must know the approach of each scholl; for example, a kata in Shidokan MUST be choppy in some parts, since Kimé is the goal of those movements, and must flow in other movements, the student has to know WHERE. Lightly commenting on how the kata should be done is disrespectful and ignorant, unless one knows the focus of a particular school.
This video CORRECTLY says: "Matsumura no Passai", the other Passai are "Itosu no Passai" with two versions, from which the Shotokan Bassai are derived. Nowhere does it say it is Matsumura Passai from Hohan Soken Sensei lineage. Hohan Soken, by the way, also practiced under Chibana Chosin Sensei, who kept this kata in his lineage under the name "Passai Dai", the other two Itosu Passai being "Passai Sho" and "Koryu Passai" in Miyahira Sensei Shidokan.
Grandmaster Soken performed at times with Chosin Sensei in the early fifties but far as I know he did not study under him. If you have proof otherwise please let me know. I see you are in Argentia were Master Soken lived for 20+ years. Is this the lineage you are under? Thanks
I read this on a discussion forum about Shorinryu styles, in which it was said that Hohan Soken Sensei practiced with Chibana Choshin Sensei ( I said "under" because Chibana Sensei was Soken Sensei's senior) being it that Chibana Sensei taught a version of the old style modernized to some extent but keeping the traditional, effective combat approach. I am under Miyazato Shoei Sensei of the Miyahira Sensei Shidokan lineage.
