They are the 2 best coaches in NBA history (and lmao if anyone says Mike Brown, just stfu) But Phil Jackson has not changed the game like how Red did, Phil jackson needs stars like MJ, Shaq, and Kobe to win championships, whereas Red had the gift to make stars out of ordinary people
Phil has 10 and Red has 9, but that is not that effective as an argument because by that logic, Robert Horry is better than Michael Jordan because Horry has 7 and Jordan has 6. Also, Red took his DRAFTED team to the Finals 10 YEARS IN A ROW. What other Franchise has gone to the Championship for a whole decade consecutively? They won 9 of 10 and 8 in a row. Try to discredit Red all you want, but 8 in a row is still 8 in a row. Not even the Yankees 5 peat is close. Still 3 years off from TYING it.
Phil Jackson may be better as a coach, but Red Auerbach is on a much higher level regarding what he did for the game of Basketball itself. He drafted the First Ever Black Player and started the First Ever Black Starting Five in the NBA. Talk about revolutionary. He treated his players like they were family and had success not only as a Coach, but as a General Manager too.
David Stern should watch this video before he judges LeBron's actions following their game 6 loss to Orlando. There was nothing wrong with reacting the way he did. You don't have to fake a smile and hug the opposition who just beat you to be a good sport.

2008, Game 4: Lakers blow a 24 point lead AT HOME to their hated rivals (I was at this game, loved it). Phil made no adjustments to stop the bleeding.
2008, Game 6: Lakers lose by 39 in a deciding game, record.
Red was a great coach but I think he was an even better g.m.. The moves that he pulled off in the 50's and 60's were great and then in '84 they traded Gerald Henderson for a 1st round pick which turned out to be Len Bias. Their have been great defenses and great fast break offenses but it's funny how no team since the Celtics in the late 50's and 60's has put that together. They're the only team in NBA History to play lockdown defense and then run the ball down the opponent's throats.

The players were acquired for a fast break team but the 80's was the first time that the Lakers ran the fast break. They traded for Kareem, got Wilkes, and signed Nixon. In all the interview that I've seen of West, Goodrich, and Kareem or Wilt, I've never heard them say that they were a fast break team. Everyone talks about how when Magic came they started to run, especially because that suited his style best.
I know that, but the system that they used to run like they did was taken off of what LA's Coach learned from Red after winning a bunch of championships with the Celtics. Red is the original creator of what eventually became "showtime" or "westcoast" offense.He was not only the best coach/gm that ever lived,but he is the father of modern basketball as well.he was a great man, and he will be missed.
I know Red started the fast break I was just saying that the Lakers weren't a run n gun team until the 80's. That's crazy that no one has combined lockdown defense with fast break offense, since the Celtics. I think the Celtics right now should start running, Charles Barkley said that last year adding that it would make them more dangerous.
you should watch the Celtics today,they do run and have the lockdown defense. they may not score a ton of points,but they are capable and they do run a LOT.This year they aren't the perfect example of Celtic basketball because they aren't as good of an offensive team as years past. but they are getting there,and they are the best example of the last 20+ years.Red would be proud, i hope he's looking down on his Celtics with a smile on his face. :)

Phil Jackson may be better as a coach, but Red Auerbach is on a much higher level regarding what he did for the game of Basketball itself. He drafted the First Ever Black Player and started the First Ever Black Starting Five in the NBA. Talk about revolutionary. He treated his players like they were family and had success not only as a Coach, but as a General Manager too.

Defense is not tougher now, it's just more complex. BTW idiot, when there are less teams, coaching is MORE important, not less. The more times you play a team in a season, the harder it is to coach.

Defense was actually stronger back then as you were actually able to foul hard back then. Today's defense is weak.
Red had 8 HoFs because he made them HoF. There were ZERO #1 overall players in Red's time (unlike Shaq) and at no point was the consensus that those Celtics had the most outstanding player of the era (unlike MJ, Shaq, Kobe).

Red was a great coach but I think he was an even better g.m.. The moves that he pulled off in the 50's and 60's were great and then in '84 they traded Gerald Henderson for a 1st round pick which turned out to be Len Bias. Their have been great defenses and great fast break offenses but it's funny how no team since the Celtics in the late 50's and 60's has put that together. They're the only team in NBA History to play lockdown defense and then run the ball down the opponent's throats.

The players were acquired for a fast break team but the 80's was the first time that the Lakers ran the fast break. They traded for Kareem, got Wilkes, and signed Nixon. In all the interview that I've seen of West, Goodrich, and Kareem or Wilt, I've never heard them say that they were a fast break team. Everyone talks about how when Magic came they started to run, especially because that suited his style best.

That's crazy that no one has combined lockdown defense with fast break offense, since the Celtics. I think the Celtics right now should start running, Charles Barkley said that last year adding that it would make them more dangerous.
