  • how the hell do these songs survive all these years (centuries) ?

  • @XRedburn they haven't survived. these are Ensemble Organum's propositions of how those chants might have sounded (in 6th c.). they took old roman chant from 13th century and mixed it with some eastern features

  • @swiatlowiekuiste :

In fact, Ensemble Organum have innovated much less than the monks at Solesmes did...

  • @Callixtinus monks of Solesmes made good job, without it further research on gregorian chant would be impossible. Of course now we can compare neums in Graduale Triplex with the vatican edition and we understand much more but as I say it would be impossible without their efforts. So we can say Ensemble Organum is also in a way legate of Solesmes :)

  • Wonderful chant. Anyone have the lyrics to this? Thanks in advance :).

  • @SyKmGl Lyrics and translation can be found at interletras [dot] com/canticum/eng/Translation_Xmas.html

  • I am not sure "mesonycticon" is Midnight Mass. May be in the present-day Roman rite.

  • @Eutychis :

The very meaning of the word "mesonycticon" is "of the midnight".

  • @Callixtinus Wouldn't that be "mesonycticOU" or "mesonycticonIS", depending on what language you use? :D Otherwise it's just "midnight".

  • Merry Christmas! Callixtinus, thank you for the great video. You always manage to find such wonderful images to harmonize with the music.
