I take it back. His facial expressions, bodily movements, and the way his hair jiggles make this the best Tchaikovsky of all time. Vengerov: 1 Everybody else: 0
Man, whatever happened to the video of Vengerov playing this concerto when he was 16? IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS VIDEO. Seriously, the way he sounded when he was 16 I would say is probably the 3rd best Tchaikovsky I've ever listened to.
i love the tempo! every single note sang! we can argue a lot about vengerov's playing, but one thing is true, he doesn't leave you indifferent, he does inspire everyone! and that's what a master should do.
Stop fricking comparing musicians. You'd think that the classical music fans were much more mature than that. Whatever, we don't really have recordings of Paganini so we can't compare them. Just appreciate Vengerov. If you like Paganini's work, that's cool too, but I don't see how he fucking relates to Vengerov's interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Concerto.
What pathetic comment. We can never know. However the opinions of other muscians and great composer of the time who heard Paganini play certainly considered him a brilliant technician of the violin.
Actually, since Paganini was considered abnormal by his own era's standards, it is safe to assume that modern day virtuosos are just as good, if not better.
My comment about his abnormality was in no way related to his physical attributes. What I meant was that his playing ability was something that was never seen before, therefore, it was "abnormal" to those times.
Since the bar was lower than it is today, after so many generations of fantastic violinists, I think we just have to evaluate Paganini with relation to his time period--not ours.
sorry to be pedantic -MARFAN. as for pag of course none have heard him play but it is widely accepted that he did things on the violin that none had done before and seemingly none have been able to replicate since. he was unique unto himself. that is not to detract from the greats of today and recent past of whom maxim is most def one
this is def not vengerov's best performance, it seems slightly overwrought IMO...however Rostropovich's conducting and orchestration is brilliant, he brings out details that rarely shinr through in other performances

A great violinist of our day and someone with a really fresh approach to the violin repertoire there is only 1 version of the Tchaikovsky for me and it is Oistrakhs interpretation(only my opinion-if you still don't believe me look for an old vinyl of Oistrakhs 60th birthday-he plays the Thaikovsky and what a performance!! someone was asking if the orchestra are giganticallastic compared to Vengerov-no Vengerov is quite small(big broad shoulders though)but small legs-still a LEGend of our day!!
you should hear vladimir spivakov's performance with the philharmonia orchestra conducted by seiji ozawa. Even as my favorite violinist of all times is Oistrakh.... this is by far my favorite recording of tchaikovsky concerto.
once again, almost exactly the same comment as usual posted on a vengerov video, just with kogan named this time... and bound to antagonise.. jealousy perhaps
omg omg omg omg omg omg is that uploaded yet??? i heard hilary hahn played it and i was just impressed. if was impressed when she play it, i know i would be blown away if i heard vengerov played it. hes sooo expressive when he bows. ahh. how wonderful
a bit slow for my taste as well. my fav recording is kyung wha chungs followed by mutter's. this is the 1st i have seen him play his facial exp and contortions are very distrating but his playing is amazing!
uhh what about perlman, zukerman, zimmerman, Ivry Gitlis, Camila wicks...and the list goes on. Vengerov may be the "best" of this generation, but we still have violinists from the golden era still living with us.
Absolutely incrdible - is there a dvd or recordeing of this to buy somewhere?

He had morphans's syndrome commonly known as spider finger. This abnormality was beneficial to violin playijng not a hinderance

Note how Maxim reaches for a note way up the finger board at 1.30...just to get the right tonal quality. That 's someone who really cares.

Is it on YouTube? Music is a highly subjective medium. Upload video or audio please and I will certainly give an intellectual opinion.
