@laceup1967 - Whiteman commissioned this song to be arranged by Don Redman. Redman rehearsed the Whiteman band exhuastively for THEIR recording. The Henderson version you are listening to however, from May, 1927 is clearly superior.
Thank you for the extra information. I agree that this version is far superior. I my view, Henderson's was a superior band anyway. However, my research shows that this was recorded in May not November. Which sources are you using?
Could be you are using the wrong stylus. Since the information is stored on the side walls of the groves (not at the bottom) you are actually wearing them down with a heavy weight. With the proper stylus (made especially for 78s) and lightweight cartridge you should be able to play your records without a problem.
There is a repair shop here in Toronto (Ring Audio)that specializes in analog playback machines. They carry all types of styli. There is also Bay Bloor Radio but their prices are ridiculous. Any high-end hi-fi retailer will have them. I heard that even Radio Shack sells cartridges however you might have to order them from their catalog. Good luck.
ebay has about 10 sellers I've found to be priced very reasonably. They've got needles and crtridges I've never seen before. Just search phonograph needles.
Am i right in assuming its Fats Waller on the piano?

It's that American month before day thing which has confused you. Actual recording date was May 11 1927

Very good sound. Must be an electricalally processed disc. I have always been amazed by this song. Was he referring to Paul Whiteman?
acfinney 3 years ago
Yes, actually Paul Whiteman co-wrote this song.

Your lucky that record plays well without the tone arm skipping. I have to weight mine with a coin. Great music fun, thanks....
