You can say all you want about Galloway, but on Iraq he is right. He may be a hypocrite and he may be brash, but don't let cloud the fact that he can be all those things and still correct about the war. To flip that around, Hitchens is a great intellect, a fantastic debater, and has written some great books, but that doesn't mean he can't be wrong on this.

I was a fan of Hitchens but his constant flip flopping on the some issues like palestine, were Israel is the obvious aggressor and make not respect his opinion at all. That and the fact the George Galloway mopped the floor with him in this debate.

I take it that you are an atheist and a supporter of Michael Hitchens material. Hitchens is an incredibly intelligent man however his opinion is far from the truth. Lobbying in places like Washington you need to understand that he has political and fiscal motivation to speak for Israel.

The point though is about the war in Afghanistan. regimes which exist in the Middle East, but another to try and impose secular democracies there, when there exists in the region a huge base of support for those regimes there.
We're on the same side, I think, and want the same things, but it's just that I think our (ie Western) policy in the Middle East is just a deeply flawed way of getting to it.

I was against the war in Iraq, so I can't speak for Hitchens or Bush on that, but I did agree with Hitchens, when he rebutted the anti-war argument by saying that the cause of terrorism is not our resistance to it. I thought about that statement, and it persuaded me greatly. I can't stand by silently while these fanatics intentionally target civilians simply to wreak havoc and exalt in violent, religious chaos. Yes, we've killed civilians, but we don't target them. We want the violence to STOP.
Yes of course, we need to deal with the terrorists who currently threaten us but what I'm saying is we must also understand the role of US/British foreign policy in creating these same monsters. Fighting terrorists is one thing and important, but if we change the original actions (such as unconditional support to Israel) that give political ammunition to them, characters like bin Laden will become isolated and without any appeal, and Islamist terrorism will subside.

Iraq wasn't a threat, and still isn't. The improved security is due to factors beyond our control: Isolated neighborhoods -- walled off; Awakening Councils; 'successful' ethnic cleansing; truce between Muqtadr al-Sadr and the Iraqi government. In addition, the U.S. got Iraq into this situation -- you can't use 'improved security' as an argument.
Who's protecting me? I don't fear the nationalist movements in Iraq. Al-Qaeda never existed in Iraq, but they do now.
Now, Al-Qaeda is a real terrorist organization, but the U.S. stregthened the organization by illegal invading and occupying Iraq. Just think about all those orphans left in the wake of the Iraq War: perfect material for recruitment. Now, should the U.S. pull out, Al-Qaeda will lose it's justification for being in Iraq and then deal with a surge of nationalists -- who WILL chase them out.
You're also a victim of Pentagon propaganda. You see those strategically shown images of our 'precision guided weapons' on television and assume that's the norm. In fact, only a minute percentage of weapons dropped are precision guided, the majority are cluster bombs. You also probably don't know that we have dropped over 2400 tons of depleted uranium.
And do remember that the vast majority of the 1.2 million people killed was civilians. Never mind the 5 million refugees.
Finally, you're a bit naive to believe this war is being fought to protect us rather than for macro-economics, war profiteering, the control of M.E. oil and U.S. global hegemony. But then again, I can't blame you...You've been bull shitted to all your life.

The point though is about the war in Afghanistan. You're gonna find few people in this world more anti-Taliban or pro-secularism than me, but it's just that the link between al-Qaeda and the Taliban was very much bigged up pre-invasion. Of course it was to save their own hides (which is, in itself, a rational action) but it still was a way the US could've had Bin Laden in their grasp, and what a coup that would have been. I think Hitchens arguments would be better accepted if we didn't have an over-privleged man child as our Chief Executive. It also doesn't help that the U.S.'s moral record during the Cold War was not what anyone would call 'humanitarian'.
It also doesn't help, at least on the surface, that Hitchens did not support either the Vietnam or Gulf Wars.

Still its prior bad acts we may have made a mess of things but removing Saddam Hussein from power cant be called anything less than honorable. Nam was a different case it was at the height of the cold war which made it more precarious. I agree with you though, it is an unattractive business.

I was against the war in Iraq, so I can't speak for Hitchens or Bush on that, but I did agree with Hitchens, when he rebutted the anti-war argument by saying that the cause of terrorism is not our resistance to it. I thought about that statement, and it persuaded me greatly. I can't stand by silently while these fanatics intentionally target civilians simply to wreak havoc and exalt in violent, religious chaos. Yes, we've killed civilians, but we don't target them. We want the violence to STOP.

Yes of course, we need to deal with the terrorists who currently threaten us but what I'm saying is we must also understand the role of US/British foreign policy in creating these same monsters. Fighting terrorists is one thing and important, but if we change the original actions (such as unconditional support to Israel) that give political ammunition to them, characters like bin Laden will become isolated and without any appeal, and Islamist terrorism will subside.

Iraq wasn't a threat, and still isn't. The improved security is due to factors beyond our control: Isolated neighborhoods -- walled off; Awakening Councils; 'successful' ethnic cleansing; truce between Muqtadr al-Sadr and the Iraqi government. In addition, the U.S. got Iraq into this situation -- you can't use 'improved security' as an argument.
Who's protecting me? I don't fear the nationalist movements in Iraq. Al-Qaeda never existed in Iraq, but they do now.
Btw, what's the death toll?

Now, Al-Qaeda is a real terrorist organization, but the U.S. stregthened the organization by illegal invading and occupying Iraq. Just think about all those orphans left in the wake of the Iraq War: perfect material for recruitment. Now, should the U.S. pull out, Al-Qaeda will lose it's justification for being in Iraq and then deal with a surge of nationalists -- who WILL chase them out.
