I like Transformers but Transformers 2 was...not what I expected. I was really disappointed. By the end of the film, I was completely exhuasted with all the robot fights, cheesey and corny dialogue from the "gangster" robots, etc. If TF3's going to be nothing but explosions, I'm not wasting my money.

Vancouver has the largest production facility outside of L.A.; plenty of big budget, vfx heavy features, (including the upcoming approx. $200mil budgeted 2012) and tax credits of 25+%.
'Hollywood' left L.A. years ago because it couldn't support the city's demands ($5k for building, now $20k), etc.. it's not coming back.

Actually, I am a VFX artist, writer and film maker.
I have a very good 'clue' what it's all about.
Most of Transformers was created in a computer... by ILM. Background plates shot on the fly, bounced around by handheld, augmented by explosions mean that the CG guys did all the heavy lifting on the film.
And I happen to live in Canada.
And I take exception to his comments when he's trashing good, talented, capable people that I've had the pleasure of working with.
Well as a film maker you should be able to appreciate each stage of production.The amount of work that goes into shooting on location is mindblowing.The bg pates arent just sporadic,theyre considered, at least he's not like most action film makers who rely completely on CG;he does most vfx for real-explosions etc.Also just so u know i wasnt insulting the canadian film industry or its crews,just defending bays work.Hes just used to his crew so its worth the money for him to get his crew with him
The man knows what he's doing when it comes to action flicks. I also really agree with what he's saying about runaway production... CA seriously needs to consider offering tax rebates or "true Hollywood" - a place where films and TV are shot - will be transplanted to New Orleans and Canada leaving Los Angeles with only the corporate offices. It's a scary thought since "the industry" effects ALL aspects of life in LA.
michael bay is really good at these action packed movies, when it comes to dramas and romance, he is off the list, you cant just say "yh ill pick the best director in hollywood" you have to choose which director suites your genre, point is that everyone need everyone to survive

Apparently that's what the world wants since he made nearly 600 million dollars so far world wide. I think he knows exactly why he makes things explode.... where and for what reason. i'm a beginning film maker, and trust me, to do what he does... it takes years of planning and years of making the film happen. It takes skill my friend.
I am also an aspiring film maker. My style is more along the lines of Kevin Smith and Trey Parker. I believe story is the most important thing. I understand to point of "popcorn" films but I expect the basics of any story to be met. Three act structure and character development, these make the foundation of any movie. Most of Bay's films have little to no character development. Dynamic characters make good movies because the audience connects with them.

I like Transformers but Transformers 2 was...not what I expected. I was really disappointed. By the end of the film, I was completely exhuasted with all the robot fights, cheesey and corny dialogue from the "gangster" robots, etc. If TF3's going to be nothing but explosions, I'm not wasting my money.

And I couldn't more with him about iphone movies. I've always said it was a fad. Why would I bother watching a movie in such a small screen? If outdoors, I rather socialize. Traveling? Plane or other means: read, music, sleep, last resort: portable dvd/meadia notebook size screens. At home? 50" HD tv.
I just wish would challenge himself and add something more to his movies: drama.

U-huh, cause filming Transformers is SO tough. 80% was done in post by ILM, the plates could be shot anywhere.
Vancouver has the largest production facility outside of L.A.; plenty of big budget, vfx heavy features, (including the upcoming approx. $200mil budgeted 2012) and tax credits of 25+%.
'Hollywood' left L.A. years ago because it couldn't support the city's demands ($5k for building, now $20k), etc.. it's not coming back.

Actually, I am a VFX artist, writer and film maker.
I have a very good 'clue' what it's all about.
Most of Transformers was created in a computer... by ILM. Background plates shot on the fly, bounced around by handheld, augmented by explosions mean that the CG guys did all the heavy lifting on the film.
And I happen to live in Canada.
And I take exception to his comments when he's trashing good, talented, capable people that I've had the pleasure of working with.

Well as a film maker you should be able to appreciate each stage of production.The amount of work that goes into shooting on location is mindblowing.The bg pates arent just sporadic,theyre considered, at least he's not like most action film makers who rely completely on CG;he does most vfx for real-explosions etc.Also just so u know i wasnt insulting the canadian film industry or its crews,just defending bays work.Hes just used to his crew so its worth the money for him to get his crew with him

The man knows what he's doing when it comes to action flicks. I also really agree with what he's saying about runaway production... CA seriously needs to consider offering tax rebates or "true Hollywood" - a place where films and TV are shot - will be transplanted to New Orleans and Canada leaving Los Angeles with only the corporate offices. It's a scary thought since "the industry" effects ALL aspects of life in LA.

Apparently that's what the world wants since he made nearly 600 million dollars so far world wide. I think he knows exactly why he makes things explode.... where and for what reason. i'm a beginning film maker, and trust me, to do what he does... it takes years of planning and years of making the film happen. I am also an aspiring film maker. My style is more along the lines of Kevin Smith and Trey Parker. I believe story is the most important thing. I understand to point of "popcorn" films but I expect the basics of any story to be met. Three act structure and character development, these make the foundation of any movie. Most of Bay's films have little to no character development. Dynamic characters make good movies because the audience connects with them.

I remember seeing badboys 2 over a pals house! it was just over the top!! felt like the same car scenes were being repeated over and over again! the storyline was bad! it was poor! I think bay thought he was beating Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series by cramming in more action!! truth is! Donner could come up with a few great action scenes! bay comes up with a ton of shite scenes!
