it´s probably nostalgia but I haven´t rode in a better streetcar than the PCC.
In the Hague , Netherlands. These were delivered in the early fifties and I believe they are still spinning their driving wheels today ! It was the perception of clever , durable and above all good-looking american engineering.
Interesting that you have cable cars, street cars, trolleys, and regular municipal buses in SFrancisco. I wonder if all that variety isn't a bit pricey to maintain???
But if you think about the big picture the cost to maintain the system is not a lot compared to the benefit.
After all how many people come to SF for the Cable Cars, heck even the 1940's street cars draw people to SF and that pays in big in the long term, not to mention the Ferries that connect us to places like Alcatraz.
Plus you have both the regional and local Rail, Bus and Ferry systems that connect all of the Bay Area.
@Beachdudeca - ''cost ... not a lot compared to benefit'' ~ good to know. Other cities should try that as a way of attracting tourists. With the high cost of gas these alternate methods of transportation should be even more beneficial and more attractive to tourists.
The PCC was the best streetcar ever built! Back when the car was first developed, the builders were soon making an ADA accesable car. No it did not come with a lift, but the asile was already built to permit a wheelchair to roll to a spot to park.
This is the best way to get to Castro street from downtown. It is really fun. Stop in the twin peak bar for a drink and sit down and talk to the custermer there. They are very friendly
"The bright red street cars in SF are stunning. I wish every city could have these."
Agreed, they pwn any transit vehicles made today. I wish SF could have more of them. Those red cars you talking about, I believe came from LA. They tore up those lines to build the LV Freeway system. Which is why LA sucks to this day.
I agree.I would love to see streetcars like those in this video in general. I would love to see these were i live in Huntington, NY. Or in New York City or Philadelphia or Chicago.
I live in Antwerp (Belgium) on the continent of Europe and we haven't got such nice and historical trolleys/streetcars like San Francisco!! The type of streetcars (we call them "trams") which is most common in our city is from PCC (not all the same as the ones of Gmunden and Vienna in Austria but resembling almost). Also new lowfloor trams, called "HermeLijn", are seen on Antwerp lines 2,5,6,8,11 and 15. I like trams a lot (read about them and collect pictures)!!
someone should get a video of the powerhouse (or whatever its called) the place that has all the machinery to run this system I got a few pics but I wanna see a video
Yeah you should Google for "san francisco cable car museum" and select: Video. You'll see a couple of my videos, but I only have shots of the out side. The other videos show the wheels turning the cable.
I think I have a few shots of that too. I'll post it if I find it, but it will be a while. Now I'm just waiting to receive my new hard drive so I can start editing video again.
im gonna get an external so i can back up actually move my files to it and free up my pc's HD then i can save and archive and edit videos, and the sound the cable car makes when it rolls it sounds like one of the space sounds in my duke nukem 3D game
I was using two 500 gig internal drives for editing and storage. Anyways I had some disk problems. So I pulled the drives to keep my files safe. I have no space to edit now. But I just ordered an other drive. I'm going to upgrade to OS X Leopard with a clean install on that drive. Then I'll put my files back on it, and everything should be good. I think I I'll probably buy one more too. Then use two as externals as full back ups.
500 gig drives id like to get the biggest one i can afford a 1 TB one sounds good. and i also like the bell ding ding sound of the SF cable cars, in another video or this one maybe I saw 2 guys pushing one of these cars is it easier to push these vs a car or harder
San Francisco roacks. It has one of the best public transport systems in NA. There is an exciting amount of variety when it comes to public transit. Love watching trolleybuses with their poles pivoting over the safety island in this video.
Thanks. If you haven't already, you might like take a look at my Seattle videos. I have a lot more shots of trolley buses, including some good overhead shots inside the Seattle Bus Tunnel.
Thanks. BTW San Francisco has some old Japanese streetcars too. I don't know if any are in service on this line right now. However I think that Muni is now working to restore a 1927 streetcar from Kobe, so it can be used in the future.
THis makes me want to go to SF! Sadly right now the only PCC places i can go now is to Philadelphia or to Boston from NYC...

1400deadwood Take the market st line of SF Minicipal....
of course they went way over the top whith all those busses, trams and trolleys.
( and subway, and cable cars )
Pure overkill and a lot of money will do that. Especially when you notice they average about 1.75 passenger riding on them
bonsema1 1 year ago
@bonsema1 Dude , what is this 1.75 passengers , all of our transit tends to be pretty full and heavily used here in San Francisco.

When in SF I go to Mkt St just to ride in a PCC.

@1400deadwood actually you forgot the Subway (BART) so its light rail, streetcars, cable cars, trackless trolley, SUBWAYS and buses.

@timosha21 - folks in Frisco sure are smart about transportation

The cars in the video are ex-Philadelphia PCC's that have been rebuilt and repainted in liveries of all the cities in N. America that had PCC cars.

LOL. Yeah, you'd think that someone could make a modern electronic fair box, that at least "looks" antique for these things.

Japan has a very famous TV program, "Sekai no Shaso kara."
Sekai no Shaso kara means the view from train's window all over the world.
This video is like that.
Angle is best, content is cool! Thanks so much!
We can feel San Francisco's atmosphere very easily.
And though San Francisco' city is like Kobe in Japan,
San Francisco' streetcar is like Hiroshima in Japan.
Hiroshima has many kinds of the streetcar as same as San Francisco.
Thanks again.
