But Ana can look back at this match and learn from it. I have never seen Serena hit the ball so hard EVER, so that showed how threatened she was by Ivanovic. One thing i didn't like though, was the cocky looks Serena was doing when winning a point against Ana.. she was definately jelous of Ana's beauty!
Serena definitely whacks the ball from time to time; if it's within her hitting zone, she just absolutely unloads! However, she is far from a ball basher when she actually gets into rallies. I especially love how she gives her opponents a high loopy backhand crosscourt to either change the pace, neutralize the point if she's playing defense, or just pulling them off the court to set up a winner! Sigh... I love her ;P

Let me throw this out there besides her semi in this tourney with Venus and Miami and the Year ending championships I think this was the best match Serena played in 2009 outside of the Grand Slams.
The sad part is that this is one of Ana's best matches of 2009. She will never be as good as Serena, but I would like her to get back to her best. The WTA needs her.
that mega fh return of serve is something she did a lot during er winning streak at the start of 2008. she still does it occasionally but i think she really should go for it more often. it was effective against a serve like ana's so it should be effective against anyone!
I like Ivanovic's net-attacking strategy, but a lot of the time her approaches aren't deep enough, and with Serena at the other side of the net, it's practically suicide.

Besides, Serena doesnt even hit the ball that hard, not compared to some women on the tour. You people must not watch Sharapova often, or Ivanovic for that matter. Ivanovic and Sharapova both hit way harder than Serena, their arms and racquets produce a rubberband-like motion. Their shots are insane, Serena hits moderately hard consistently. I think that is why people think she hits hard; she doesnt hit many floaters.

@samaybrahmin There are plenty of people that hit the ball hard. Sometimes the opponent is hitting harder than Serena. Serena is clearly not ALWAYS hitting the ball as she can and she can still win her matches. If she feels her opponent is being aggressive and controlling the points, THEN she will go to her max power that no one has. I've been a fan of Serena for the longest and more times than not I get mad because sometimes she is playing too passive.

uhm ... i dont think that you should determine a persons skill based on how "hard" they hit the ball because that is not what tennis is about. if the women that she challenges cannot handle the way she plays then that just proves how much of a better player she is. there are many different styles of play. some women hit soft but place the ball well. Serena hits hard AND manages to place the ball well. the other women who "got around" the power, just outplayed her, thats all. you cant win it all

Let me throw this out there besides her semi in this tourney with Venus and Miami and the Year ending championships I think this was the best match Serena played in 2009 outside of the Grand Slams.

that mega fh return of serve is something she did a lot during er winning streak at the start of 2008. she still does it occasionally but i think she really should go for it more often. it was effective against a serve like ana's so it should be effective against anyone!
