  • Thank you for posting this, PhilosophyF.

  • These debates are always enjoyable, especially hearing Hitchens deliver such sound reason, but I wish that they would try a little harder. The format is always the same: 1. Ten minutes of the usual rhetoric from each person. 2. Theist/Creationist/Whateverist delivers logical fallacies. 3. Atheist delivers the usual good material that the Whateverist is well-prepared to illogically refute, and 4. Whateverist then dances around all the points like a clown. We need a new format!

  • poor dinesh

silly christian, logic is for atheists

  • Well this was an interesting read... Akamola the self proclaimed revolutionary! Dude, if you scrape that dump out your pants and maybe rinse the gritty sand out of your vagina you might just sit more comfortably and behave a bit better.

    Naughty boy.

  • Good stuff ,thanks PhilF

  • haha i cant even read what akamola is saying because every comment is given about 20 thumbs down. epic fail!

  • If it makes you feel and better, you have not missed anything.

  • christopher has got a good mind of reasoning.

  • O C'mon what is the matter with you

    This guy is well balanced.....

He has chips on both shoulders!!!

  • Love the Hitch!

Saw him debate live last month :)

  • it's more than a bit ridiculous to suggest that there has never been an atheist who spent a significant amount of time caring for people with leprosy or knowingly risked contracting a deadly infectious disease to help the sick. atheist physicians and nurses do such things everyday without any expectation of a heavenly reward.

  • Exactly.

  • "without any expectation of a heavenly reward."

exactly, which makes it an even more selfless act. i think this is a far more moral thing to do.

  • I respect you, but please don't swallow Christian propaganda

  • Bullshit. There are many nonbelievers who do selfless things on the same level. Religion is NOT required for that. The challenge stands.

But you are right about Teresa.

  • I'll name two:

Galileo Galilei who gave his life at the hands of tortorous Christians to preserve truth and the scientific enterprise that ultimately cured leprosy.

James Madison, who pledged his life, property and sacred honor to free his country from a tyrannical state that mandated the Christian religion. He risked his life to fight for future generations he would never meet.

  • The fact that your research hasn't found anyone that has done that doesn't prove anything. His question wasn't. I surmise that you are suggesting that an atheist can never do anything selfless, which you have no evidence to support.

  • hey akamola, isn't it a sin in your religion to lie? especially about your faith?

  • Look at your own logic... Why couldn't an atheist do what father damien did? Assume that you are correct in asserting that an atheist has never done what father damien has done. It does not logically follow that because it hasn't been done, that it cannot be done. I think you are confusing "cannot" and "hasn't"

  • Arguing whether it has is irrelevant to whether it can. One's a comment on some history, one's a statement of possibility.

You're making a gross category error here.

  • We dont know that it hasn't.

And Hitchens question was about naming something that couldn't be done; not naming something you don't think has happened.

Again, you're making a gross category error here.

  • It has nothing to do with /my/ logic.

You said you could name something an atheist couldn't do. Its in your first comment. That, in fact, is something an atheist /can/ do. That's logic.

Why haven't you seen it? I don't know.

Has it ever happened that an atheist committed themselves wholly to the benefit of others? I do not know that, either; perhaps it has. But that's not relevant to Hitchens' point.

  • If you don't understand the difference between "can" and "has", I am not confidant anything can be explained to you at all. This is the very basics of logic.

    Thanks for watching anyway.

  • My evidence is logical necessity. Whether something has or has not happened is irrelevant to whether it can, if you acknowledge that, then you acknowledge my point.

And as such, your assertion from your original comment (which I can quote for you) about how no atheist could perform an act such as Father Damien is untrue. Such an act can, possibly, happen... as its not impossible.

You keep asking why it hasn't, but if you understand the difference between can and has, that's irrelevant.

  • Not a general sense, a rational sense. A logical sense. Its not uncertainty, its true by definition. Again, this is basic Logic 101.

Evidence is the definition of the terms, logical operators, and normal language. Can an atheist devote their lives wholly to some selfless pursuit of the care of others? Obviously, yes--because its possible.

Which means your assertion that it can't be done is false, strictly by basic, rudimentary, simple, academic, textbook, easily referenced inference.

  • "nly his religious background could have given him the strength to do that."

This is clearly false, as people HAVE done it without such a background, such as the example I gave. You asked for an example, I gave it, and you havent even acknowledged that yet.

  • Still with the insults. Still letting yourself down by talking at that level. Some decorum please.

No, not happy, because you are referencing an organisation which doesnt answer what you asked. You wanted one non religious person, i gave you one and you havent acknowledged it. You choose instead to represent yourself with insults and repeating yourself.

  • Again with insults and nothing intelligent to say. Sorry, as long as you conduct yourself in this fashion I have nothing to say to you. Try this comment again but write it maturely and stop letting yourself down.

  • You claim to understand the difference between "can" and "has", and yet you argue that something that is logically, evidently on its face, true is "uncertain".

Either you don't understand basic logic (which isn't a sin nor a crime, many very smart people make the error that because they're bright that means they're rational), or you don't understand the terms.

  • "Obviously, in a GENERAL SENSE, a non-believer can do anything that a believer can. With reference to Father damien's deeds being performed by a non-believer, you are just using the same kind of uncertainty that religious people use. "Such an act CAN, possibly, happen... as its not impossible", like how apologists say god CAN exist, it is not impossible. What evidence do they have ? Practically none. What evidence do you have ? Practically none."

    That's a great simile.

  • Wuzzah

I just think that was a good simile =P

I saw your argument with the other guy who could not give you an example.

So what, I am the only person who am willing to say that you had the edge up til this part of the discussion, and you call me a cunt. Btw I like cunts, wish I had one.

  • lol high on what, Rohypnol?

    =P

  • He has been given an example now however. He has failed to acknowledge that of course.

  • Back to the name calling I see. Insults demean only the insulter. You let yourself down with discourse of this level.

As I said, you asked for one example, I gave you one, and you have not acknowledged it yet. That is all I wrote. It is very simple, and yet you cant answer it and turn instead to insults and repeating yourself.

  • The fact that you cannot imagine it says more about you than about anything else.

  • Oh, god...

  • Nope.

  • Did Galileo Galilei really die by Christian hands? Do you have any sources? I thought he was "only" put in "house arrest".

  • Easy: Gerald Duurrell. He gave all his money, and his health, for the cause of saving endangered species, which ultimately amounts to saving humanity itself. From its own stupidity.

  • You ARE a Christian apologetic.

Have you heard of "straw man" argument? Calling Durrell a zookeeper is exactly that. Petty dishonesty, typical for religious nuts.

Plus, you are implying that saving LIFE itself on earth is somehow less important than giving pills to a few sick people (See? Strawman isn't nice.)

  • Haha, nice.

Out of arguments, therefore start with the insults. Typical. :))

  • Calm down, sonny. No need for hysteria. You seem to be under the false impression that the younger one dies, the bigger his/her achievement.

It's good you educated yourself about Durrell, but you should learn to spell too: "brain", not "breain". But I'm too harsh - you don't know what a brain is, how would you know how to spell it... :)

  • Yeah, my comment about your typo wasn't very relevant. I might have been a little irritated by being called a cunt.

  • Really if you have to reduce yourself to language of this sort, and insults, then you have already lost. Insults demean only the insulter, not the target. Take a deep breath and try again in polite rational discourse.

  • Real mature. Do you actually feel proud of yourself talking in such fashion? To me, when someone talks like this, its just because they know they are beaten.

Insults demean only the insulter, not the target. You demean only yourself with discourse of this level. Some decorum please.

  • "Name One"

Saraswathi Gora. Put her life at risk and underwent hatred, violence, exile AND imprisonment for what she believed as she campaigned against untouchability, poverty, gender bias and FOR Humanism and atheism. She voluntarily lived in poverty WITH the sick herself

Winner of the Birla Award she campaigned until death and founded "Athiest Centre". The pain she went through she went through EVERY DAY, not just the RISK of contracting a disease, but actually living it.

  • Maybe you should read about the slums where she lived by choice. The violence and fear she lived under the threat of every day. Every day would have been a risk of being infected by any number of diseases or killed by any number of the people who hated her.

I do not know why you are so fixated on disease, there are other terrors that people can sacrificially live under voluntarily. The problem is not what secularists can or can not do, but your subjective measurement of the worth of such.

  • "a little cunt"

sorry no response for the troll while it talks in this fashion.

  • Your insults and school yard language is present in this comment too. As I said, until you raise the level of your discourse your comments are useless to me. Raise your game and you will stop being so wrong, so often and people will treat you at the level of maturity you talk at.

  • Still with the language. Some decorum please. You are just trolling now. No response until you raise your game.

  • And she did not do this? She went to prison, was attacked numerous times, lived with the poor and the diseased every day in awful conditions. Your hard on for leprosy clouds your ability to measure the worth and sacrifice of those who have done things you can only dream of.

  • Once again, she went to prison for freedom fighting and land reforms, which have, once again, digressed from the main premise of my argument, she was only beaten by the BRITISH for rebelling against them, which doesn't fall into the category of Father damiens gross self-imolation, and it has never been documented that she was beaten or attacked or diagnosed with any severe diseases. I don't know whose ass you're pulling this shit out of, but I think a little CUNT like you need to just STFU !!!!!

  • Troll still name calling and bad language. No response for the troll while it talks like this.

  • Well said mauddib. You know what people start talking like that they just have nothing intelligent left to say, but rather than say nothing they act like children.

Wisdom comes in knowing that when you have nothing to say, say nothing. Your troll friend here would do well to learn that.

  • Thanks, yea you get trolls like this who demean themselves talking at a level that any 6 year old could achieve. They let themselves down and those they pretend to speak with (this one claims to be an atheist, i have yet to see an atheist act like him on you tube though).

Still, one can just hope he gets some real arguments and learns to present them in a fashion that doesnt reduce himself to the gutter.

  • Still trolling. Still insults. Still bad language. Still no points made. Next.

  • More childish language. Still no points. Still no reaction for the troll. Next.

  • Nothing from the troll today, still waiting for a point.

  • Yea, your trolling wont work on me either, thanks.

  • Nope, more trolling will also not work on me.

  • No, this trolling will not work on me either.

  • More bad language and insults. Still no points. Still just trolling. Next.

  • Real mature.

  • As I said, she did as much if not more in her own way. It is just your own hard on for leprosy that is clouding your ability to quantify the supreme acts of others, acts you can only sit back and comment on and will never achieve.

  • You know comparing the self sacrificial actions of people is self defeating yet you still do it. You have a hard on for one particular sacrifice and so subjectively no one else can compare. Thankfully the world doesnt operate with your measure of what is self sacrificial. Youre welcome to it, I am just glad the rest of the world doesnt subscribe to it.

  • Back to trolling, no points and insults. No response for the troll.

  • Still trolling, still no points, still with the insults, still no reaction. Next.

  • More trolling, still no points, next.

  • Still can only troll. Still can not make a point. Next.

  • And yet more trolling, yet more insults, still not a point made. Still waiting. Next.

  • Has troll boy realised the error of his ways and gone off to find a point to make?

  • Not what I said, try again.

  • Comment removed

  • I imply no such thing. Keep your words out of my mouth. I know what I mean by what I say, I do not need you to lie about it.

Think before you speak, you will stop being so wrong so often. You will stop having to remove your own messages because even you can see how bad they are, and you will stop getting more down thumbs that anyone ive seen.

  • Yes I do understand them. Clearly you do not which is the problem here. But rather than trying to you prefer to talk like a school child at me.

  • "She put into practice what she championed "To do good or to be good, god and religion are not necessary." An incorrigible optimist and activist even at the age 89 she had already received a number of National Awards including the equally prestigious Jamnalal Bajaj National Award, and also the Janki Devi Bajaj National Award for her outstanding contribution to Comprehensive development and social change."

I think her memory deserves an apology, do you not?

  • Comment removed

  • Yes and yes.

Clearly you dont however, which is why you come out with name calling and comments you then have to remove because even you know how bad they are!

  • Unrelated: Dune is the best book I've ever read.

Even the prequels/sequels/spinoffs by his son and Kevin J. Anderson are extremely good.

Butlerian Jihad was phenomenal....some of the content in that book was haunting.

  • "One moral thing that a believer can do that a non-believer cannot do-Spend 12 years with a Leper colony..."

Very very false and secularist and atheists have both done such things. Just because YOU have not heard of them does not negate their existence and you rubbish their efforts by this comment.

  • Further the question asked was to show an action that a non-believer COULDNT do. Not HASNT done. So even if you were not wrong, and no one has ever done such a thing, this still does not answer the question. Secularist and non-believers are more than capable of performing such an action, you have provided no reason why they could not.

Nice try though, but try again.

  • "I am an Atheist"

So am I and I have to say that not only are the points you have made here wrong, but the manner in which you have conducted yourself, the language you use, the level of maturity you display and your attitude to others are an embarrasment not only to yourself but to anyone else who calls themself an atheist. I wish to distance myself as an atheist from you publically here and now and I thank goodness there are few like you in our ranks. Keep racking up the down thumbs.

  • Yes, I distance myself from you and repeat you have let yourself down with the way you presented yourself in the thread above, and you let down anyone who is on your side of the the fence. The other users here have dealt with you perfectly and have not even entertained any of your comments where you have just posted bile.

  • I rest my case. As Hazel said, "Real mature"

  • Again, very mature.

  • You are no such thing, as I said you are just an embarrassment to yourself and others who are on the same side.

  • Again, real mature. Keep trying.

  • Real mature again.

  • Yeah still real mature.

  • Uhuh, mature as ever.

  • Looks like the troll is gone nozz. Maybe he learned a lesson here. We can only hope.
