He was lying at the end. Penn meant he was either maintaing the top cards or the buttom cards intentionally when he was doing the shuffle. Shame he lied.
@smjsychj He wasn't maintaining the top cards or bottom cards when he was doing the shuffle...He was tracking them through the shuffles and when he had located them he produced them...So there were no false shuffles and not any card was kept intentionally in the same position though the shuffles... (For the 1st part of the demonstration)
That single handed one, I am sure everybody can see that 4A's are just on top. The first two handed one, unfortunately the camera angle covered him up when Penn and Teller walked up to the front. From 7:10 to 7:16. And at 7:17 he is already fanning out the deck. I think he palmed 4A's in his hand and put it on top of the deck. And then fals cut and stuff. There is another card magician doing roughly same trick on fool us, with eyes closed and shielded. You can see the palming action better.
I don't know how the second trick was done, but I did see a couple false cuts. I also saw that he was spinning the cards at some points in the trick. That normally indicates that the magician is memorizing the bottom card (see mismag822's tutorial on the "Identical Twins" card trick).
i know next to nothing about magic and saw the card guy's fake cuts and position holds in the deck. and i have no idea how it works, but the cards popping out and getting thrown back in were clearly some sort of move.
2nd half of the trick: he palmed the last ace when he put his hand behind his back. He then pulls the remaining aces from the top of the deck. There WAS a false CUT for the last ace (the first two were nothing but flashy moves where the aces aces just stay on top), but certainly was not a false "shuffle". The first half of the trick, no idea.
The last guy didn't fool them at all! I think they simply misunderstood "half deck false shuffle". What he does, quite obviously, is memorise the location of the aces and bring them to certain positions in the deck. Penn called this a pseudo-false shuffle, the performer did not.
could someone inbox message me the name of the song in the first performance, not the ghost and stuff one, but the song during the actual performance. thanks
@arthuronfacebook It's easy, I think that they want too tricks in the performance with box. Don't forget that it's a TV show, they need too the classics tricks for the audience :P
@CoonarStreetmagic The first 2 are blatantly just taken from the top after not mixing the cards at all. He then splits it into 3 and and puts the top pile on the bottom as you said, but he doesn't square the pack and hence can see where the previous top card is still and so he just brings it to the top again and flips it over.
At 7:24 the trick is shown to everyone! 5 cards in between every Ace and 4 for the Ace at the end. Love that. NOW I known how he did it - He just made sure the cards were always counted in place. he counts them as he goes, practices for hours to make it look like the cards a removing - i can assure you those 5 cards and Ace never move. But he has to see where the Aces are first of course so he fans them out and memorises their positions..
He keeps his finger in the place where the aces are hidden at all times, but he is so good at moving the cards that there is the illusion that he is shuffling, but if you look closely he only shuffles once each time and the card is already placed by that time at the top. A friend showed me this.
That diagram must have had a picture of the guys bottom in the false section underneath and the guys knees are scrunched in. Had to be that easy. You wont see a fat guy do the trick, you have to be very slim thats why they use those slim ladies in the box normally, its not just about eye candy, they have to be very agile.
I'm thinking he's a gifted mechanic. He's like a Vegas dealer and can "feel" card width, and is able to produce a specific number of cards on any pull. So if the first ace is 19 cards in, he just does the mental math, keeps cutting the cards in specific thicknesses, and leaves a key card on top. Mechanics with showmanship and no real slight of hand during the trick. Technically different than P&T's theory.
Don't know if this has been gone over cause I didn't read all of the comments, but the first trick was really easy. Its just a double bottom or a false bottom. He pulls the bottom in with his knees.
i paused the video when that guy that fooled pen and teller spread the deck. and toward the right suspiciously all the aces are 6 cards away from eachother and the last ace on the left is 5 cards away. idk what this does but its just what i have seen
The first part of the card-guys trick, finding the aces, was amazing, the one-handed part was easy to see-through though, imo, that was fake shuffles, he simply stacked the aces on the top of the deck.
This presentation isn't new to the gambling world. this guy is talented (the second one). He did retain cards in the shuffle and I noticed that as I do that as well I can tell a false cut. He shouldent of argued he should have just said thanks and leave.
I could be wrong here but I think Benjamin Earl is full of shit... at 9:10 he doesn't actually cut the deck; he takes the top half, circles his hand around, and places it back on top to give the illusion of a cut - the ace was on top of the deck the whole time. Same at 9:25. At 9:15 notice how the next ace was also on top of the deck under the A of diamonds. Notice how he leaves cards sticking out during this part so he can remember where one half is and place it back on top to reverse the cut.
@ryanDV87 Yeah I think any idiot can see that, but how did they get from their random locations in the pack to being in the exact positions Benjamin needed them to be?
@ryanDV87 I mean, obviously via some tricky hand movements etc, but that's not "figuring it out" that's just assuming since it's the only logical answer.
All I'm saying is that he's full of shit when he says there are no false shuffles. I have no idea how he does the first part; but in the second part, once he squares up the cards he places the three aces on top of the deck and uses a number of false shuffles to keep them there.
@ryanDV87 Agreed, gnackattack doesn't know what they are talking about. The deck is ordered (five cards then ace, five cards then ace, five cards then ace, not impossible to track).
For the deck of card trick, the pack is already rigged. Penn and teller are the stooges. He then uses very clever and delft false shuffles, very talented. Think about it, since when would a fresh non-sneaky pack of cards arrive shuffled in that order!
It is amusing that he denies the pack is rigged and half-shuffles occur to Penn and Teller given the context. They both know that this is the case.
In any event, they fooled me, i had to re-watch the trick to see how it was done.
@JohnnyFiveMagic You have no idea what you're talking about. If Penn and Teller were stooges, then they would automatically know how it was done and he wouldn't win.
Second, what do you mean "in that order". What order? The cards look random enough to me when he spreads them out.
And third, you didn't "see how it was done", what evidence can you present that your completely illogical suggestion is true?
@gnackattack Don't worry, It's not your fault that you are not as clever/observant as me. At 7 m 20 s, Going from left to right there are: 5 cards followed by an Ace, then 5 cards followed by an ace, then 5 cards followed by an Ace. For the final Ace it is placed 4 cards from the right. This is NOT a coincidence it is ordered - how did it "magically" happen :)??
Surely Penn and Teller two magicians wouldn't lie to us :)! The deck could have been switched, in any case it was ordered.

@Slashtap3 its a simple box trick, hiding his body underneath and using fake feet. at 2:42 u can see his legs over the mat, the one thats exposed behind his head is solid, he uses his left arm to pull his legs in. the table is thick enough for his to sit between. half on top half on bottom so its not obvious.
The secret to the first trick must be lying in 2:45 to 2:47 you can see there is something poping up behind this "thin" black material which should be totally flat yet it isn't.
For those who are wondering about the James More trick the first one in the video.
the feet were mechanical they were not his feet you can see the same movements over and over in his feet and as someone said before the top cover is elastic and u can barely see it change shape as he tucks into it with his body.
oh also you can see some mechanical stuff in there around 2:39
Damn why? why I can't get rid of the feeling when there is a magician with that sort of table you know that it is the place where everything goes to. Wish I could wipe this memory and enjoy it more :-(
@ronald010ify When performing Teller never speaks. It's his gimmick. He's also a trained mime and contortionist. I've heard him do readings on the radio. He's capable of speech, but it's kinda funny and fits his personality that he doesn't.
He's a dick when performing; it's part of the act. But when interacting with human beings he's very kind and humble, he simply doesn't put up with BS.
its so simple the way the box is slightly raised off the table and the looks thinner then it actual is he could easily squeeze under the table and the feet are fake of course,
actually quarry is kind right, the he almost never really shuffles the top cards, he only did it twice and when he did it he marked the top card (the ace) with his finger, by moving the deck a bit and then picking that card
That last guy is flashy but his "one handed" is obviously sloppy, He's just drawing from the top and then fingering the top feigning a slip up simply relying on people not noticing. As for the start He just tracked the aces, his first shuffles are with the deck face up too. He's not fooling Me.
@quarry1212 In the next part of the video there is a brief segment where Penn & Teller go over the performance backstage, and they say there were some false shuffles in there. Still, it looks to me that at least some of the shuffles did move the top card, though you're right that a lot of the shuffles appear to be made to look more thorough than they really are. Just my 2 cents.

actually quarry is kind right, the he almost never really shuffles the top cards, he only did it twice and when he did it he marked the top card (the ace) with his finger, by moving the deck a bit and then picking that card
Borelo 8 months ago
That last guy is flashy but his "one handed" is obviously sloppy, He's just drawing from the top and then fingering the top feigning a slip up simply relying on people not noticing. As for the start He just tracked the aces, his first shuffles are with the deck face up too. He's not fooling Me.

fake shuffles can move even the top cards

@quarry1212 In the next part of the video there is a brief segment where Penn & Teller go over the performance backstage, and they say there were some false shuffles in there. Still, it looks to me that at least some of the shuffles did move the top card, though you're right that a lot of the shuffles appear to be made to look more thorough than they really are. Just my 2 cents.
