Lol it is so confusing thathe finds her ugly indeed.
I heard that Joss was offered a different role but they assigned her to the ugly wife instead. I guess one of the directors didn't find Joss pretty? Or maybe they just didn't want to offend and actualy ugly person by giving an ugly person the role lol.
I don't think it was because he found her unattractive. I believe it was because of his leg. An open oozing wound is not good for turning people on in bed.
I think the marriage likely failed because Henry had unrealistic expectations. All he had was a picture into which he could pour his hopes for a perfect bride, dreaming of his ideal. She fell short. She was not trained as a British courtesan. She was a huge letdown to his fantasy. Compared to the well-educated Katherine of Aragon, the devious and seductive Anne Boleyn, the sweet flirtations of Jane, or the vibrant youth of her successor, Katherine Howard, Anne of Cleves was... bland at best.
@Aelinore You are absolutely correct. After a while I bet Anne congratulated herself for a narrow scape. Henry was no prize either -even if he was the king.
Henry found her strict religious upbringing meant she was very shy and not at all, shall we say, "sexy" in the bedroom. He couldn't bring himself to touch her, probably she was terrified of him. Historians note on their first meeting, Henry, who was at that time rather middle-aged, quite fat and smelled terrible from a seeping leg ulcer, thrust himself on her, and she recoiled. Some say she spat out his kiss, or wiped her face, not realizing it was the king. It was all downhill after that.
Henry never argued with Holbein over the portrait, so it was probably realistic. She DID have a large nose, which is hard to see when facing forward. Contemporaries said she was ugly because Henry vehemently stated that she was. However, records of his complaints are more that she was a little too plump, had less than stellar hygiene (coming from a small province she was not as educated as an English courtesan), and was terribly dull. She couldn't speak much English, sing, dance, or play cards.
Anne of Cleeves wasn't unattractive. Modern interpretations of the relationship suggest that they just weren't attractive to one another. On the upside, getting an annulment probably kept her head on a little longer. :P
In reality, Henry found her extremely unattractive, he never consummated the marriage, and they were annulled soon afterwards. It doesn't really make sense in the show because Joss Stone is smoking hot.
I agree - Joss is "hawt!" It the first thing I thought when I learned she was cast in that roll.
According to writer Allison Weir, Henry thought Anne of Cleves smelled funny. (?). Her accent perturbed him, etc. I think, too, he was still pinin for Jane Seymour, whom, I think, he is buried next to after all.
It's bodice-ripper as history with Henry portrayed as a stud.

You know, I love King Henry, but sometimes he makes me so mad with how shallow he is.
He could have been a bit nicer to Anne Of Cleves.
I'm not sure how accurate those paintings were, but she didn't look that unattractive to me.
