I always loved Clapton's version but I gotta say, and this is coming from a BIG Clapton fan, this sounds just as good, if not better, to me. This Japanese dude really know how to rock!
That "Japanese dude" is the original writer of the song, Ryuichi Sakamoto. Along with his band YMO, he originally produced the song in 1978 and officially released it in 1979. The version in this video is a 1987 cover version of his own song.
Awesome, but do you have or know where to find the media bahn live behind the mask from 1987, not 1986? As the 1987 one is the best of all I think, with awesome vocals. Fowler in purple.
A huge prize for you for giving us Bernard Fowler's name. Realy, thank you. One day, someone says RyuIchi Sakamoto made a lot for the rise of nu-soul as a genre.
No my friend, this is a cover of the cover by Eric Clapton (who totally slaughtered it in my opinion) But confusingly enough this cover of the cover is done by the guy who wrote the orignal in the first place...
Even without the added MJ lyrics, Sakamoto's 1986 version already sounds way too different from his original 1978-79 version. This should be obvious from the fact that his 1986-87 version is almost completely acoustic rock, whereas his original versions were entirely electronic synth-pop. From all the cover versions of "Behind the Mask" released, it's quite ironic that it was the original writer's own cover version that sounds the most different from the original version.
I wouldn't know if this is Sakamoto or not, however having spent some considerable time in japan I can say the vocalist is definately japanese. I am also very familiar with both Clapton's and Phillinganes versions both of which are bluesy compared to this. Just listen to the opening chord sequence , no european musician would naturally use that progression unles he wanted an oriental feel
The lead vocals on this song is by Bernard Fowler. Bernard Fowler's experience has spanned all genres of music ranging from gospel, rock, R&B, jazz, funk to latin.
He has appeared on tours and albums, singing and displaying his versatile and eclectic talents with some of the best-known artists of the 20th Century: Herbie Hancock, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gil Scott-Heron, Sly & Robbie, Material, Bootsy Collins, Herb Alpert and many others, as well as his own Peech Boys, Tackhead and Nicklebag.

This is Ryuichi-solo version. He released mini CD "Behind The Mask" in 1987. He invited 3 vocalist.
1.Behind the Mask with Bernard Fowler
2.Risky with Iggy Pop
3.Field Work with Thomas Dolby
You should serch by using " Media Bahn Live Behind " if you want to watch Bernard Fowler vocal live version.

How sad, I think the Michael Jackson additions really hurt the original. It's almost an admission of defeat that Sakamoto recorded this version!

But who is it? ... Doesn't sound like Sakamoto ... Sounds American though.
MystikWolf83 3 years ago
This version was recorded by Ryuichi Sakamoto himself in 1987.
Played by Sakamoto's "Neo Geo" tour musicians, and Sakamoto played keyboards.
He emphasized his R&R emotion at that time, while he composed the musial score of "The Last Emperor" in same year 1987!
He recorded R&R version of "Field Work" at the same time (original version was the collaboration with Thomas Dolby in 1985).
