@lonepantherkmt And you must be a Liberal uneducated fuckwit, cannot even spell and like a typical libtard, attack people when you disagree with their views.
the timeline from 'nothing, no pcs' to 'making money with pcs/visicalc' is three or four years - for crying out loud, we've had ipods longer than that now! beware of a false impatience with the past when one's youthful years blind you to how fast or slow they actually proceed... ;0 - 'stupid ol' nerds, why didn't they get rich quicker? it took three years to invent the whole industry!' lol! ;0
Letting other people get rich off of your invention while you got bumkis didn't make the world a better place. As long as money was going to be made off of it you should have made it.
But if that's what you have to tell yourself to sleep at night for being a couple of the greatest fools in history, well then...
I guess those VisiCalc guys had a different attitude in the days when the money was rolling in. Since they screwed up and rested on their laurels, suddenly it is 'yeah but we're communists at heart'.
He is so intent on make this video about power, money and competition. There are certainly those aspects going on.
However, take this part for example. Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, the visicalc guys, etc: they were all about doing something great and improving lives. This element is basically completely ignored by Cringley because he wants to make it about other things.
let's put all the cards on the table, Cringley is a huge tool, ok!?!
With that being said, there is some truly great things in this video that are a pure result of the 60s mindset. Although not the same today, don't make a generalization that today's world can't do that. It might be harder to accomplish, but it is very possible.
These two guys at the finish explained to me why people today are doing things: to get rich and not only for the passion and make a difference in this world. Today is all about money and that's what really matters. I feel so sad about it because there's no genius like in 70's and 80's in technology, sports and arts. Just make junk things or scandals, be part of any reality show and suddenly you became an icon. C'mon, let's wake up!!
I think it's interesting that computers started out as big simple calculators, then went through a silly honeymoon period of geek hobbies like playing music and running train sets, and then went BACK to the serious original intentions of the calculator stuff with the spreadsheet.
I wonder what took them so long to find that. Maybe like big kids, they were just too excited with the lights and sounds of a new toy .

At an age where many people try to get laid or drunk for the first time, Steve Jobs created modern history.
