What made this country great was land. Blacks had very little to do with exploration towards the frontier. And truth be known, we wasn't such a strong nation as you put it. We were economically weak in the late 1800's, to 1920's. WWII is what made us strong so fast.

Good question on the Grand Canyon. Before Mount St. Helens erruption, all geologist agreed that the grand canyon took millions of years. After that erruption, they had to rewrite text books. A small grand canyon was created in seconds. The blast was so powerful, the heat and speed showed layers of rock that if one didn't know better they would have thought it took millions of years to make.

Carbon dating has proved to be unreliable, and can't be used for ignious rock for instance.

I think with how quickly society and the government has changed that older people may be inhibited by the fact that their perceptions were shaped at an earlier date when the government wasn't quite at the level of corruption that it is now.
