Nice explanation - very good presentation! I think the green line has lower gain than the red one. I believe the mirrors are the main difference. At least one of the IR lines has very high gain, and is hard to compete against in longer laser tubes.
Mirror alignment is simplified by having one or more of the mirrors slightly concave. Tubes like this one do not use two flat mirrros.
