yeah...the largest organism (single entity) is either a fungus or a stand of quaking aspen...size changes yearly, so it's a push and pull contest...sequoia are non less beautiful because of that...
Actually as i know the largest living organism (by biomass) is the Pando in the USA. It's said to be 60-80000 years old and weights more than 6000 tonns, and covers many acres. I think this beats the sequoias :D. These trees are awsome anyway. It would be nice to see one in real life. Unfortunatelly here in hungary they grow "only" 40 meters tall.
what is UNIVERSAL FACT: the Armillaria ostoyae of the Blue Mountains of Oregon is the largest organism on earth. It's like me saying the phrase "The blue is dog" and then everyone saying, "no, no, no" it's "The dog is blue" when in fact the dog wasn't even blue to begin with.
This tree is the largest, most massive living thing on earth. I've been to Sequoia 2 times, once in 1980 and again in 2004. This guy is correct with everything he says on camera. The bark is 3 feet thick. Been struck by lightning hence the gaps.
@Blue3Devil Look up Sequoiadendron on wikipedia. Scroll down to the list of "Largest Trees". You'll see General Sherman at the top spot. The largest tree from Mariposa Grove is the Washington tree at #18.
I'd paste the link directly on here, but I keep getting a posting error.
@FrenchToastMafiaz No, it's not. The tallest tree in thre world is in Humbolt county (376 ft.) and is not a Sequoia but rather a Coast Redwood (a close but slimmer cosin). By the way, it has no name and it's location is kept from the general public - for obvious reasons.
@rtselby - Please take a lesson in logic before posting and throwing insults at people. Based on YOUR comment, since it's the largest organism in the world, that MAKES it the largest Sequoia tree.

@wrafe FOR REAL... on youtube theres all this conflict over politics, religion, war and everything else- thats bad enough but then a dude can't even just share an experience he taped next to an insanely huge tree without somebody finding a way to be a dick about it - riselby you suck
you almost destroyed the whole wide world by touching that tree. don't you know that if you jump the fence that that automatically equals the whole world jumped the fence? do you understand the logistical nightmare of bringing EVERYONE in to complete this task?
What would happen if he touched an old tree??? I seriously don't understand why that would harm the tree, the tree obviously is a lot larger than the guy and he is more likely to be hit by a falling branch than the tree dying of injury by him!!!
I think I would want to touch the tree too. Its ironic when we think what other dangers we are doing to our world forests and woodland. Touching a tree don't kill em.
Almost everyone who goes there goes past the fence to compare. It's not a big deal, the fence is just there to show a path. There is actually some steps at one side to use to get in there anyways
@photoopd1 No, Its not quite as high, and the truck is still wider, they cut holes through lots of redwoods, a car isnt that big when you look at the size of these trees.

well guys its like this there are billions of trees in the world. There are hundreds of thousands of trees that are over 2000 years old. I dont think jumping a fence and walking around a tree is going to hurt anything. U say there are 6.5 billion ppl in the world stampeding around that tree. Trust me I come from a long line of gypo loggers and we know how to take care of the land and respect it. touching or even walking around that tree will not harm it. Fuckin enviromentallists I swear you people really are fuckin things up for all of us.
problem is that alot of people visit this particular tree so if 50% of all the people visiting this tree climbing over the fence and approach it its fragile roots will bleed for people who wanna touch the biggest tree on earth then go off the path and hike to the ishi giant, franklin tree, boole tree or to the washington tree then nobody would complain about your activities! And if it is that fucking fragile, maybe nature needs that tree to go away so a new and stronger one can take it's place.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@wrafe Hey ahole (that would be you, wrafe), do the world a favor and don't procreate. The world has enough slobs who don't give a damn about the environment. It's not our job to enlighten a tool like you if you're too lazy and selfish to educate yourself before damaging a natural wonder (and videotaping himself for authorities to see). Try to jump my fence and see what happens. I hope a tree falls on you.
@wrafe Sequoias have ridiculously shallow root systems (in proportion to their height) and the fences are there to prevent the cumulative damage by thousands of people that would affect the roots if they were not in place. You can rest assured you did no harm to this giant.
@wrafe Please don't listen to the idiots trying to make a point about if you jumped the fence or not, what's done is done, and you did'nt do anithing else than admire this wonderful tree and actually touch it ,im so glad you did it with respect and thats all that matters
@wrafe yeah, i'm sure animals have walked all over that area in the past 2000 years. The difference is that there are 6.5 billion humans, and a big "LARGEST TREE IN THE WORLD" sign next to this tree just to draw all of them to it. And obviously the park decided it was necessary for the tree's health to build a giant goddamn boardwalk around the entire root system. So why are you better than everyone else? how come you get to jump the fence just for your worthless 20,000 views?
@fackinjacksack - I'll admit that it wasn't the wisest thing to do. I'm also not a dendrologist and would admit that there could be a bigger impact to what I was doing at the time. I was excited to see these trees (from Ilinois) and my mind set was to give my friends and family this awesome perspective video (don't care about the number of views). What I do it again? Probably not.
BTW, take it easy on the exaggeration. 20K views does not equal 6.5 billion people stampeding near it.
God knows how deep and long his roots are. In 2000 years this bad boys fought bad weathers, hundreds of generations of animals and bugs and stuff you couldn't even imagine.
Yet you are here, complaining they built a little road with a little sign so that people can see it and that someone decided to touch it LIKE IT'S A FUCKING KITTEN OR SOMETHING. It's not like a 50-tons bulldozer drives around it all day, crushing the earth.
@NassimosReturn The root system of red woods are actually quite shallow. They can be uplifted surprisingly easily. A few of them survived this long, yes. Maybe because people respected them in the past, or maybe because random dolts from all around the world, even illinois, didn't go around trying to impress their people by making perspective videos, I don't know. Either way, they are a lot more fragile than they seem. Before you respond with another diatribe, look into it.
@wrafe thanks for going up to it because you are right it was impossible to tell how big it is until you did. thats fucking incredible! and yes you are right, theres no way someone getting close to it can hurt that gig bastard. the parks are just afraid of some idiot setting it on fire or something. good video.
The biggest tree in Taiwan died because too many people trampled near its base, since most of that tree's roots were shallow. The sequoia is very similar; most of its roots are less than 5 feet below ground, and agitation of the soil results in lost moisture.
@Kingzoid I feel I have to share my knowledge. Your comment on how shallow the roots are, I don't think so. For one, a sequoia and redwood (and yes they are from the same family) draw most of the water in take from for that rolls in from the west, that being 70 to 75% of it moister, the rest is drawn from the ground. And second a tree that tall and that enormous would need to have deeper roots to keep its self from falling over. I know this, because I have a PHD in horticultural science
@KiKuMan92 I understand your rebuttal. However, I see no alternative explanation why the Taiwanese tree was not as robust in the presence of visitors. Also, the climate in the Southern Sierra Nevada is not the same as the Pacific Northwest. It's certainly true that redwoods derive their water consumption from air moisture intake, but the same cannot be said for their mountainous cousins.
Also the 5-foot thing - I did not make it up. I learned this from the Nat'l Park people. The plaques at the park also say that sequoias derive most of their water consumption from seasonal snowmelt, and that makes soil disruption very sensitive. The other way to reason is that the density of smaller plants around the vicinity of sequoias is relatively small. This means that something just below the ground is sucking up all the water. I encourage you to visit the Nat'l Park yourself.
@MaciejMezynski what the fuck are you spazzing about a fucking bold dozer could not take that tree down you really think this guy could???? man your fucking stupid.
2200 years, but in nevada a tree arrives at 4600 years, and in Svezia (italian name, I don't now how is in english) a "living rest" of tree have 8000 years
I don't mind hoping over the fence, but people should not be allowed to touch it!! This really get me upsets to see people touching it. Sorry folks but I get very emotional when it comes to General Sherman.
The fence is there to protect the largest living thing in this world. The roots of sequoias are extremely shallow. People were hopping the fence when I was there too. It's a shame that people can't follow simple rules. There are thousands of other trees just as big in the forrest that you can go right up to and touch and have your picture taken with.
I'm not like the other morons who are gonna freak out about you hopping a fence to show us that. That's absolutely amazing...I really want to take my girlfriend to this park now, but the problem is we live in North Carolina =__= You standing beside the tree just really put it into perspective. And you can't take away the privilege to look at a tree, Macdaddy, just because someone hopped a fence. I know I for one would sneak in to look at it anyways.

It's not our job to enlighten a tool like you if you're too lazy and selfish to educate yourself before damaging a natural wonder (and videotaping himself for authorities to see). Try to jump my fence and see what happens. I hope a tree falls on you.

@django772 You got it buddy. Anything else I can do for you?
wrafe 1 year ago
@wrafe I would say learn how to punctuate properly but you obviously have bigger problems.
django772 1 year ago
@wrafe Sequoias have ridiculously shallow root systems (in proportion to their height) and the fences are there to prevent the cumulative damage by thousands of people that would affect the roots if they were not in place. You can rest assured you did no harm to this giant.
billyjoeboomboom 1 year ago

So why are you better than everyone else? how come you get to jump the fence just for your worthless 20,000 views?
fackinjacksack 1 year ago
@fackinjacksack - I'll admit that it wasn't the wisest thing to do. I'm also not a dendrologist and would admit that there could be a bigger impact to what I was doing at the time. I was excited to see these trees (from Ilinois) and my mind set was to give my friends and family this awesome perspective video (don't care about the number of views). What I do it again? Probably not.
BTW, take it easy on the exaggeration. 20K views does not equal 6.5 billion people stampeding near it.

@fackinjacksack
IT'S THE DAMN LARGEST TREE IN THE WORLD.
Dumbass
NassimosReturn 11 months ago

Kingzoid 1 year ago
@Kingzoid I feel I have to share my knowledge. Your comment on how shallow the roots are, I don't think so. For one, a sequoia and redwood (and yes they are from the same family) draw most of the water in take from for that rolls in from the west, that being 70 to 75% of it moister, the rest is drawn from the ground. And second a tree that tall and that enormous would need to have deeper roots to keep its self from falling over. I know this, because I have a PHD in horticultural science
KiKuMan92 1 year ago
@KiKuMan92 I understand your rebuttal. However, I see no alternative explanation why the Taiwanese tree was not as robust in the presence of visitors. Also, the climate in the Southern Sierra Nevada is not the same as the Pacific Northwest. It's certainly true that redwoods derive their water consumption from air moisture intake, but the same cannot be said for their mountainous cousins.
Kingzoid 1 year ago
Also the 5-foot thing - I did not make it up. I learned this from the Nat'l Park people. The plaques at the park also say that sequoias derive most of their water consumption from seasonal snowmelt, and that makes soil disruption very sensitive. The other way to reason is that the density of smaller plants around the vicinity of sequoias is relatively small. This means that something just below the ground is sucking up all the water. I encourage you to visit the Nat'l Park yourself.

You should have held your arms out.
That would be 6 feet or a bit less and we'd get a better sense of scale.
Good on you for hopping the fence though.

how old this tree ?
nawaf757 3 years ago
2200 years, but in nevada a tree arrives at 4600 years, and in Svezia (italian name, I don't now how is in english) a "living rest" of tree have 8000 years

actually the tree is 2,800 years old.

I don't mind hoping over the fence, but people should not be allowed to touch it!! This really get me upsets to see people touching it. Sorry folks but I get very emotional when it comes to General Sherman.
Harshcore811 3 years ago
Let people embrace nature within reason, otherwise if everything is outer bounds, people will soon loose interest in protecting the environment.

juteraoo 3 years ago
The fence is there to protect the largest living thing in this world. The roots of sequoias are extremely shallow. People were hopping the fence when I was there too. It's a shame that people can't follow simple rules. There are thousands of other trees just as big in the forrest that you can go right up to and touch and have your picture taken with.
Billy0099 3 years ago
I'm not like the other morons who are gonna freak out about you hopping a fence to show us that. That's absolutely amazing...I really want to take my girlfriend to this park now, but the problem is we live in North Carolina =__= You standing beside the tree just really put it into perspective. And you can't take away the privilege to look at a tree, Macdaddy, just because someone hopped a fence. I know I for one would sneak in to look at it anyways.
