@bigdawny Convoy ships can score a bunch of points for their team if they successfully complete a lap around the convoy course. It isn't easy, though, so protecting the transport is very important.
@trainmandan05 Quite right. We use CO2-powered pneumatic cannons firing low-velocity ball bearings. the standard .177" bb is the smallest size that we shoot, but it is indeed one type of ammunition used in this club.
@HedgehogHappieness Yes they do. Because we expect our ships to sink, most club members make preparations ahead of time to speed recovery. Most ships are equipped with an emergency marker float for recovery, easy-to-access electronics for quick drying, and other preparations. One ship I know of sank eight times in one day, and my ships can literally sail back to port after sinking.

@jackknife001 NO. all cannons must past strict safety and construction standards, AND must be mounted in your own combat warship. No ship, no gun. Don't even try it.
@mom352 Well, a 1/4" diameter ball bearing is 1/4" all around, so you'd need at least a 1/4" tall magazine. It's pretty common for people to build magazines that fit two or three layers, however. For 1/4" ball bearings, that'd be about 1/2" to 3/4" deep.
@1m2345678910 Yes you could, provided you follow all the club's construction and safety rules. In fact, I would love to see you come to one of our battles. We are always on the lookout for potential new members.

Wood does float, but the ships are hollow, and filled with dense materials like motors, batteries, and lead ballast. When filled up with water, they sink very quickly.

In RC Naval Combat, "mines" consist of a 10-foot string of fishing line supported by floats about every foot. Ships that sail through the "minefield" get entangled and lose propulsion. Mines are only used under special circumstances, such as to protect docks and shore batteries.
Each ship is armed with CO2-powered cannons, firing projectiles from .177" bbs up to 1/4" diameter steel balls. These cannons are quite capable of punching holes in the thin balsa-wood "armor" that the ships are plated with.
No more than most other serious R/C hobbies, and quite a bit less than others. You can build a decent battleship for around $1000, if you know what you're doing.

Guerra, if you're interested in joining this hobby, I would highly recommend that you google search the "RC Naval Combat" website, and introduce yourself on the forum there. You'll get much more comprehensive, detailed, and accurate answers than I can provide.
The local club shown in this video is in San Jose, California, but there are other local clubs all around the world. visit the RC Naval Combat website to find out more info.
You can either build a new ship, or buy a used one. Most skippers prefer to build new ships, although many new members find it easier to buy a used ship and refit it.
Depends on how much you're willing to invest, and how much you want to get out of it. A bottom-line destroyer can be assembled for around $500. Most battleships and cruisers can be built for $800-$1000.
Depending on how you arm it, DKM Tirpitz starts at "most battleships" and goes up from there. Unless, of course, you've already got all the tools and raw materials you need and lots of free time. Fabricating your own parts can save a lot of money.
In most cases, patching is the preferred method. Once or twice a year, re-sheeting is a good idea, to prevent the balsa wood from getting too hard. Building a whole new hull only happens when you want a different ship.
I can only think of one possible instance. A light cruiser suffered a CO2 regulator failure, which triggered an accumulator explosion, which shattered its keel and almost detached its bow. The skipper realized that he needed to dramatically re-arrange the internal components to prevent similar issues in the future, and at that point, building a whole new hull was a better option. The hull itself was still serviceable, but it was gutted to help in construction of the new one.
hey, i have a question, when you build the hull, how do you do that? do ou buy a plastic ship model and cut the pieces you need to removoe out of it, or du you just build your own model completly out of glass-fiber or whatever?
can u imagine depth charges or mines? probably some sort of cherybombs or something, because there r rc subs shooting torpedoes now. THAT WOULD BE SO COOL
can u imagine SAFETY HAZARD? the bb cannons we use don't inflict permanent damage to the ships, and they don't permanently hurt humans either (it just stings a little). Any sort of pyrotechnic, explosive, or chemical weapon is neither temporary nor safe.
You do have to pay annual club dues and insurance, to maintain the pond and take care of other club business, and protect your house and other valuable items from the lawyers in case of accidents. The dues are pretty cheap, however, and I spend more money on gas to drive to events than I do on the dues and insurance.
Each ship is armed with CO2-powered cannons, firing projectiles as large as 1/4" diameter steel balls. These cannons are quite capable of punching holes in the thin balsa-wood "armor" that the ships are plated with.
While physically possible, it isn't legal. Making your ship unsinkable isn't just unfair, it's not fun, because knowing your ship could get sunk is half the thrill! The other half, of course, is knowing that your opponent's ship could get sunk :)
why don't they observe realistic battle formation and recreate historical battles? how about the Russians versus the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese war for example?
Unfortunately, if we tried realistic battle formations, the ships would be firing at each other from 50+ feet apart. we'd need a separate pond for each fleet! If you're interested in the Russo-Japanese war, do a google search for "distant guns". The Storm Eagle Studios website has something you might find interesting.
you can still recreate formations from real battles at a short distance from each other. in the russo-japanese war the Japanese fleet did a stupid turn around in front of the russian junk fleet, making itself an easy target. you can do the same with rc's even at 2 feet from each other..
Here is a suggestion y dont u attach a fishing bobber with some line ontop of the boat. i wouldnt try that if the boats are powered with props but if they arnt you should try it. you should put a nail on the front so you can ram the other boats.
Where do I get such boats? I build them! Or I buy used ships. There are several companies that sell all the major components, like hulls, cannons, electronics, etc. To find out more information, visit:
A balloon full of helium isn't quite the right solution for an automatic re-floating device, but people have investigate using similar devices. The general conclusion was that such mechanisms take up precious internal space that could otherwise be used for batteries, ammo, or other components that contribute to staying afloat longer. And since water doesn't damage the electronics anyway, it's not really worth the effort of developing such a system. If you want to, I'd love to see what you do.
If a ship sinks, I swim out to get it. Most ships are equipped with an emergency float that marks where the ship sank, but sometimes I have to search for 30 minutes or more. Once a ship is recovered, the skipper will flush the electronics with rubbing alcohol. Once the alcohol evaporates, the electronics are as good as new. Most ships can be ready to sail again in 30 minutes. Since we have an hour break between battles, there's plenty of time to restore a ship to fighting trim.
Do a google search for "RC Naval Combat". You will find several websites with information about clubs, ship construction, discussion forums, and used ships for sale.
Pricewise, a ballpark figure is about $1000. Some ships more, some ships less, depending on your level of skill and access to quality tools. It also takes a significant time investment: Many rookies take 6 months or more to complete their first ship.
To my knowledge, there has only been one ship that was ever truly lost. That ship sank in Florida in a gator-infested pond (not the smartest place to battle) and the skipper declined to challenge the gators for his ship.
Other ships have been lost for up to three days, but they always come back eventually (even if it takes SCUBA gear). With over ten thousand combat ships sunk since 1980, I'd say that's a pretty good record.
Every submarine I have seen shoots the same projectiles as every other ship. We've experimented with elongated "torpedoes", but found that they had the undesired effect of plugging up any hole they make.
Usually we battle with even teams (blue flag team and no-flag team), but the last battle of every season is a Last Man Standing, cage-match style. Several of my other videos show
All of the cannons are powered by CO2, the same stuff used in paintball markers. They are strictly tested for penetration power, so no cannon is capable of piercing skin. I've been hit numerous times and the worst I've gotten is a bruise.
They how could they pierce through the hull of the ships? And could they like use titanium for the hull so that it is un sinkable? what if the ship sinks? will it damage the batteries, motor, etc inside the ship?
Typically hulls are made out of fiberglass or are made with other materials. Using something such as Titanium is too much work to form a hull, is too heavy, is very expensive, and the material is "hard" to come by when a harder alloy steel could be used with the same effects. But to answer your question:
1) Titanium would probably prevent penetration.
2) The electronics are protected, and although the pellets penetrate the hull, they don't go all the way through as the hull slows down projec
Sure! I would love to build and battle tall ships. Tall ships would present an interesting challenge to maneuver, as well as shoot and sink your opponent. The only thing stopping me right now is that I wouldn't have any opponents to fight. But if someone would rise to the challenge, I'd be all over it.
Submarines are no more expensive than any other ship, and ships (including submarines) are always repaired after a battle. However, submarines are very difficult to build due to their small size. To my knowledge there are only three functional combat submarines in the world, and none of them are currently for sale.
its also harder to fight with a sub, since they dont have torpedos or anything. on my sub, i had a deck gun made by a guy i know. and the part that sucks is i have to surface to shoot. but if your submerged, its almost impossible for the battleships to get u.
I repair mine, and it's usually really cheap to do so.
They have submarines available that are really hard to sink (unless you buy a "depth charge" addon which is really just a gun on the stern that shoots a ball directly down to damage the hull and thus cause it to sink).
If you buy a ship, it's usually as easy as just running out and picking the sinking hulk up. If you buy a sub, well, they'll be harder to deal with.
Yes we repair them :) My cruiser was sunk three times and had more than 50 holes shot in it by battleship-caliber guns this year. I only lost a cheap $8 servo and a two-year-old $25 bilge pump. Everything else survived and should be good for at least another year or two of fighting. Getting my cruiser sunk a few times sure beats smearing a few $300 RC planes across fifty yards of grassy field :D
i was wondering, for depth charges, it would b cool if u could get small explosives(penny bomb type) and find a way to time them and place em on the back of the ship, then have a trigger to release a bomb and mayb hit the sub :) just a thought btw
It comes back to the thought of would you want a warship that youve built hit with an explosive that would do more damage than a ball bearing. I know the one I am building I would never want something explosive to hit her takes too much time to build one.
The main hull is either plywood ribs deck and keel, or fiberglass with many large penetrable windows cut. The outside is sheeted in thin balsa wood, so that the cannons can penetrate it and sink the ship without needing enough power to be dangerous to humans.
Can you tell for me where you get those ships? me and my friends would like to start this funny hobby, but we dont know how. Also it would to be nice if you could tell how you make those sink, where you get ammo and motors + some more things.
HOW ?!?! ... HOW ?!?! did I go from a redbull kite-snowboarding video to this ????

Stinkysplewdap 2 years ago
Lets see...
patching: 1 to 2 hours of work
re-sheeting a hull: 3 to 5 hours of work
building a whole new hull: 100+ hours of work
In most cases, patching is the preferred method. Once or twice a year, re-sheeting is a good idea, to prevent the balsa wood from getting too hard. Building a whole new hull only happens when you want a different ship.
kotori87 2 years ago
Thanks, has there ever been an instance where re-sheeting or patching has'nt done the job and a new hull of the same shape had to be macined?
Stinkysplewdap 2 years ago
I can only think of one possible instance. A light cruiser suffered a CO2 regulator failure, which triggered an accumulator explosion, which shattered its keel and almost detached its bow. The skipper realized that he needed to dramatically re-arrange the internal components to prevent similar issues in the future, and at that point, building a whole new hull was a better option. The hull itself was still serviceable, but it was gutted to help in construction of the new one.
kotori87 2 years ago
hey, i have a question, when you build the hull, how do you do that? do ou buy a plastic ship model and cut the pieces you need to removoe out of it, or du you just build your own model completly out of glass-fiber or whatever?
Cult1022 2 years ago
My ship is the battleship Scharnhorst. You can see me swimming out to it during the middle of the video, in the calm part.
kotori87 2 years ago
you should build a bigger lake. have some airplanes and subs. that would be sweet.
brreed93 2 years ago
can u imagine depth charges or mines? probably some sort of cherybombs or something, because there r rc subs shooting torpedoes now. THAT WOULD BE SO COOL
Templarzealot89 2 years ago
can u imagine SAFETY HAZARD? the bb cannons we use don't inflict permanent damage to the ships, and they don't permanently hurt humans either (it just stings a little). Any sort of pyrotechnic, explosive, or chemical weapon is neither temporary nor safe.
kotori87 2 years ago
Exactly that! My little brother tells me to "explode" my models, but I say him: exploded models = no fun!

This looks fun! Do you have to pay to join?
DevynYoshi 3 years ago
You do have to pay annual club dues and insurance, to maintain the pond and take care of other club business, and protect your house and other valuable items from the lawyers in case of accidents. The dues are pretty cheap, however, and I spend more money on gas to drive to events than I do on the dues and insurance.

Yeah! Shoot the ducks!
lt1fan94 3 years ago
Big Gun Commandment number 7: thou shalt not shoot the waterfowl, except in self-defence.
Come on, guys. The ducks don't sink, so it's a waste of ammo, and the water district that owns our pond will kick us out if we shoot them.

j0ehellm0n 3 years ago
Each ship is armed with CO2-powered cannons, firing projectiles as large as 1/4" diameter steel balls. These cannons are quite capable of punching holes in the thin balsa-wood "armor" that the ships are plated with.
kotori87 3 years ago
is it possible to build these like a boston whaler ? (foam filled)
EducatedSwampRat 3 years ago
While physically possible, it isn't legal. Making your ship unsinkable isn't just unfair, it's not fun, because knowing your ship could get sunk is half the thrill! The other half, of course, is knowing that your opponent's ship could get sunk :)
kotori87 3 years ago
why don't they observe realistic battle formation and recreate historical battles? how about the Russians versus the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese war for example?
modernmariorc 3 years ago
Unfortunately, if we tried realistic battle formations, the ships would be firing at each other from 50+ feet apart. we'd need a separate pond for each fleet! If you're interested in the Russo-Japanese war, do a google search for "distant guns". The Storm Eagle Studios website has something you might find interesting.
kotori87 3 years ago
you can still recreate formations from real battles at a short distance from each other. in the russo-japanese war the Japanese fleet did a stupid turn around in front of the russian junk fleet, making itself an easy target. you can do the same with rc's even at 2 feet from each other..
modernmariorc 3 years ago
Here is a suggestion y dont u attach a fishing bobber with some line ontop of the boat. i wouldnt try that if the boats are powered with props but if they arnt you should try it. you should put a nail on the front so you can ram the other boats.
killerorio 3 years ago
where do u get such boats that you can fight with? This looks like much fun, and i would love to try it.
Superbowl96 3 years ago
Where do I get such boats? I build them! Or I buy used ships. There are several companies that sell all the major components, like hulls, cannons, electronics, etc. To find out more information, visit:

y dont you tie a balloon full of helium to the boat and when it sinks it wont go all the way down...??
pc4x4 3 years ago
A balloon full of helium isn't quite the right solution for an automatic re-floating device, but people have investigate using similar devices. The general conclusion was that such mechanisms take up precious internal space that could otherwise be used for batteries, ammo, or other components that contribute to staying afloat longer. And since water doesn't damage the electronics anyway, it's not really worth the effort of developing such a system. If you want to, I'd love to see what you do.
kotori87 3 years ago
well if they sink do you test them in shallow water or if they sink oh fucking well there gone
FatherGrigoriHlfLf2 3 years ago
If a ship sinks, I swim out to get it. Most ships are equipped with an emergency float that marks where the ship sank, but sometimes I have to search for 30 minutes or more. Once a ship is recovered, the skipper will flush the electronics with rubbing alcohol. Once the alcohol evaporates, the electronics are as good as new. Most ships can be ready to sail again in 30 minutes. Since we have an hour break between battles, there's plenty of time to restore a ship to fighting trim.

were can i find one and how much money will it cost
PaTmAn130 4 years ago
Do a google search for "RC Naval Combat". You will find several websites with information about clubs, ship construction, discussion forums, and used ships for sale.
Pricewise, a ballpark figure is about $1000. Some ships more, some ships less, depending on your level of skill and access to quality tools. It also takes a significant time investment: Many rookies take 6 months or more to complete their first ship.

k thx, btw those are so awesome

were there ever any ships that were actully lost and could not be found?
DevynYoshi 4 years ago
To my knowledge, there has only been one ship that was ever truly lost. That ship sank in Florida in a gator-infested pond (not the smartest place to battle) and the skipper declined to challenge the gators for his ship.
Other ships have been lost for up to three days, but they always come back eventually (even if it takes SCUBA gear). With over ten thousand combat ships sunk since 1980, I'd say that's a pretty good record.

i saw a submarine in there dose he shoot the balls or dose he have like torpedos or something
pickett101films 4 years ago
Every submarine I have seen shoots the same projectiles as every other ship. We've experimented with elongated "torpedoes", but found that they had the undesired effect of plugging up any hole they make.

Usually we battle with even teams (blue flag team and no-flag team), but the last battle of every season is a Last Man Standing, cage-match style. Several of my other videos show

(oops! posted before I finished!)
Several of my other videos show footage of the 2006 Last Man Standing event.
kotori87 4 years ago
what are you shooting??????
nightstalker3400 4 years ago
Each ship is shooting steel ball bearings ranging in size from .177 inch diameter to .25 inch diameter.
kotori87 4 years ago
how do they shoot it? with gun power? Can it pierece through skin?
aeroscope 3 years ago
All of the cannons are powered by CO2, the same stuff used in paintball markers. They are strictly tested for penetration power, so no cannon is capable of piercing skin. I've been hit numerous times and the worst I've gotten is a bruise.
kotori87 3 years ago
They how could they pierce through the hull of the ships? And could they like use titanium for the hull so that it is un sinkable? what if the ship sinks? will it damage the batteries, motor, etc inside the ship?
aeroscope 3 years ago
Typically hulls are made out of fiberglass or are made with other materials. Using something such as Titanium is too much work to form a hull, is too heavy, is very expensive, and the material is "hard" to come by when a harder alloy steel could be used with the same effects. But to answer your question:
1) Titanium would probably prevent penetration.
2) The electronics are protected, and although the pellets penetrate the hull, they don't go all the way through as the hull slows down projec
jadefalcon0 3 years ago
Can you do this with tall ships?
catholic23 4 years ago
Sure! I would love to build and battle tall ships. Tall ships would present an interesting challenge to maneuver, as well as shoot and sink your opponent. The only thing stopping me right now is that I wouldn't have any opponents to fight. But if someone would rise to the challenge, I'd be all over it.
kotori87 4 years ago
how much do the subs cost and do you repair them?
codenamebailey 4 years ago
Submarines are no more expensive than any other ship, and ships (including submarines) are always repaired after a battle. However, submarines are very difficult to build due to their small size. To my knowledge there are only three functional combat submarines in the world, and none of them are currently for sale.
kotori87 4 years ago
its also harder to fight with a sub, since they dont have torpedos or anything. on my sub, i had a deck gun made by a guy i know. and the part that sucks is i have to surface to shoot. but if your submerged, its almost impossible for the battleships to get u.
mbcNOOFS 4 years ago
do you repair them or go buy another one?
codenamebailey 4 years ago
I repair mine, and it's usually really cheap to do so.
They have submarines available that are really hard to sink (unless you buy a "depth charge" addon which is really just a gun on the stern that shoots a ball directly down to damage the hull and thus cause it to sink).
If you buy a ship, it's usually as easy as just running out and picking the sinking hulk up. If you buy a sub, well, they'll be harder to deal with.
Friendo1231 4 years ago
thank you so much
codenamebailey 4 years ago
Yes we repair them :) My cruiser was sunk three times and had more than 50 holes shot in it by battleship-caliber guns this year. I only lost a cheap $8 servo and a two-year-old $25 bilge pump. Everything else survived and should be good for at least another year or two of fighting. Getting my cruiser sunk a few times sure beats smearing a few $300 RC planes across fifty yards of grassy field :D
kotori87 4 years ago
i was wondering, for depth charges, it would b cool if u could get small explosives(penny bomb type) and find a way to time them and place em on the back of the ship, then have a trigger to release a bomb and mayb hit the sub :) just a thought btw
scalpine 4 years ago
you could do it with a electric ignition system, a waterproof fuse, and something to push it off the back.
mbcNOOFS 4 years ago
It comes back to the thought of would you want a warship that youve built hit with an explosive that would do more damage than a ball bearing. I know the one I am building I would never want something explosive to hit her takes too much time to build one.
Milner62 4 years ago
lol yeah, just a thought though
scalpine 4 years ago
The main hull is either plywood ribs deck and keel, or fiberglass with many large penetrable windows cut. The outside is sheeted in thin balsa wood, so that the cannons can penetrate it and sink the ship without needing enough power to be dangerous to humans.
kotori87 4 years ago
they fire anywhere from .177 to 1/4 inch steel balls. and as far as I know their either made of Balsa wood or thin fiberglass.

how and or where do u get those ships want to start doing this it is sweet

Can you tell for me where you get those ships? me and my friends would like to start this funny hobby, but we dont know how. Also it would to be nice if you could tell how you make those sink, where you get ammo and motors + some more things.
Also this is great vid!

do the guns puncher the hull of the ships? Is that what makes the ships sink.
