Just out of curiosity, what does "field grade" mean? You mentioned in a previous video, and I understood it as describing the condition of the weapon, but what other grades are there as well? Well made video and very informative.
Most water based dyes make finish look blotchy or unnatural and it also raises grain so you have to sand again. Oil based stains are more consistent and look natural. To fix a small crack CA (cyanoacrylate) is better due to it's water resistance and is less likely to be spotted after applying finish. Save money by using bulk 1 gallon WD40 to oil and remove any remaining grime, besides it has many uses in the home. Looks like a nice rifle you have there enjoy shooting it.
