It is the feeling i get when i play it , i do not ... erm how do i say this...right lol !
I agree with you ! ^^
It matters if i get the feeling i want to play this more if i form a bound to the game , if there is some sort of spark in my head.Hell since i was a toddler i always thought this way.
i have never looked at it like as a critique ! I always think this is someones world...they created it in a game for us to find out , the game cant be half assed in summary :)
Do any of the people saying minecraft has bad graphics actually remeber something called an Atari 2600? nine times out of ten the character you were controlling was a square block, but the games were still great, and still are now.
if u play games for the graphics only u dont deserve to play any game because a game isnt made by is graphics its made by the spunk and the experience of the gameplay
What he is saying is that the graphics matter bacause they need to fit the game. Imagin minecraft with good graphics thrown onto squares. Does that make sense to you?
yea the graphics are the best on minecraft but one of my friends say its got bad graphics but they still play it......with me i play any game that has a good story mode and graphics
I will play an 8-bit game no problem. I will play Halo 3 no problem. Even though MegaMan 2 and Halo 3 obviously have different graphics, they both have amazing elements of gameplay. Order of importance for me:
Gameplay
Story
Soundtrack.
Note I do not even put Graphics on there. Now, I won't play a game that has the graphics of a 2-year olds' drawing, because If that were the case I would not be able to play or understand what the hell is going on. But in the long run graphics don't matter to me.
Minecraft isent just about the graphacs. its fun runing away frm creepers, killing zombies building houses... with the limited amount of brick types adds chalange to the game other then servivng , and we all know games without chalagne tend to bore ppl realy fast...
well i say each point he you say is exactly because if a game has great grafics i would play it or a great story but you cant seperate them all when insinc with everything well thats a great game but each factor has a big affect on the game because well now not many people would want an old doom game because horrible grafics not good story well no story so you cant say one dosent matter
p.s. if some dosent make sense it means i trailed off k
You are right. A game should be judged by how well each element blends together. Let's be honest, minecraft's graphics aren't visually stunning. But that doesn't mean they are a negative aspect of the game. Without the block-y and pixel look of minecraft, the game would not be as good. That is why you can't judge a game on it's graphics alone. A game's visuals must meet the style of the game. A gritty FPS wouldn't be as good with minecraft's graphics and vice-versa.
But sometimes the graphics matters a lot. Life a FPS... there is no FPS without the four factors. If a FPS don't have one factor no one like that game.
I play a lot of games... different categories...
CoD... Minecraft... IAO... Left 4 Dead... Portal 1 and 2... Half life 2... Mario... Gunz...
It's not my maternal lenguage english, but try to undestend what i'm saying.
It's true what are you saying. The Graphics + Sound + Story + Gameplay = Experience
But there is game that have graphics 8bits... the sound sucks... there is no story... the gameplay sucks too... like Mario. Someone tell "Mario Sucks" and it's not true. Mario Bros it's a exellent game. I played as a kid.
I would like to make a point that GRAPHICS and AESTHETICS are seperate things. Graphics refer to the technical power of a game, that's what I believe is the correct interpretation in the gaming industry. Graphically minecraft is sub par with todays standards in the industry. It is however a very good looking game aesthetically - It's bright, colourful, very unique in its appearance.
@Perilix Everyone keeps making this point, and I disagree. The graphics are what the player is looking at. Saying that you like the aesthetics but the graphics are bad is a cop out. Either you like the way a game looks or you don't, and any waffling on that point is missing the forest for the trees.
@deadworkersparty How exactly is it a cop out? You can still appreciate and love a game, even though you could see the graphics being sub-par on a technical level. I love how Minecraft looks but it still doesn't take away from the fact that there are a lot of games out there with much more "superior graphics".
@Perilix The fact that you put "superior graphics" in quotes proves my point; the level of technical achievement is irrelevant to everyone except pedants. All that matters is whether or not a game's graphics are appealing. If you like the way a game looks, why bother with putting in a caveat that it's "sub-par" technically? It's trying to have it both ways, that you're hip enough to like good visual design, but still savvy enough to say it could be better. In short, a cop out.
I think gameplay matters more than graphics... because i love minecrafts gameplay but its graphics are bad but i still like it, ive met a couple people who hate minecraft just cause it has bad grapics.
@Mooner171 i loved cod black ops befor but now i think minecraft is better i love how the gameplay works but i also love the grafics in cod and i have played a game with a great story and couldent stop playing but if a game had them all and sound, music ect it would make a great game so if you say you dont care about one not true you may just love an other aspect more but you still mite like a game with that factor so if you cant say you dont care you probly mean you like anouther more.
For me, I think your trying to say that Art matters. Graphics is more like how much shaders you can stuff into a screen. Now art is what you see. So when people say minecraft's graphics sucks, it does. But the minimalist pixel art looks great none the less. An other example would be Terraria, it's graphics won't break the hardware bank like Crysis would. And it's pixel art style looks great.
If I like to change my texture packs in minecraft, graphics must have some kind of influence on me. I would still rather play a game based on how it plays rather than how it looks, but a pretty game is just a bonus to me. Gameplay and story (if there is one) comes before anything else in a game, but that isn't to say anything else isn't important.
Graphics and Asthetics are different thing. Minecraft has CRAP graphics, but it works asthetically. The graphics suit the game, and that is why it looks good even though the graphics are crap.
"I will play any game regardless of its graphics" Well if you have a good game it doesn't matter if the graphics are pink and full of rainbows and with an art style inspired by Lisa Frank with Faeries, Dolphins, and Unicorns. Oh and don't forget about nu-wave 80's music playing in the background.
I went into this video expecting the usual "I want hi-def rawr" zombie argument but this is actually very well-reasoned and spot-on, I *mostly* agree with this. However, I do think that some games really do break this mold with exceptional gameplay (for instance, Dwarf Fortress).
@Toksyuryel I agree with most of what he has said too, but I'm pretty sure that by good graphics he does not mean advanced graphics; so Dwarf Fortress has very good graphics to some people. I think he is saying it's good if you like it :)
@bjcsupertortoise I think most would agree that they've simply gotten used to Dwarf Fortress's "graphics". They are by no means good in either a technical sense or the stylistic sense advocated by this video. Even the creator acknowledges this. The purpose of what "graphics" there are currently is simply to make the game playable, the interface is just a rush job that is planned to be fixed later on down the road (MUCH later on down the road).
I have no problem judging every component differently. There are games that just plain suck if you take one aspect of it.
But I don't mind any one of them being crappy, as long as the overall feel is great. Some flash games are silly and boring, until you turn on the music and effects and it just takes the whole thing over the top.
Bottom line: You can judge the parts, but the sum migh be something much more.
Then there are games whose programmers spend all their time perfecting graphics at the expense of gameplay (like many Hollywood movies are now all about pyrotechnics and special effect and only a semblance of plot). IF they do not have other elements, they rarely last long.
I think it is the matter of what the game is about and what kind of games one is interested about. There are lot of people playing FreeCiv who do not care about the fact that there is no top-notch animation
To me, Minecraft is a building game with extras. It attracts people who want to build things (if only to blow them up later). The blocks with textures are the basic element that make that relatively easy but the apparently the average player still builds - at least for protection.
it just depends on what type of game it is, minecraft for example has only 16x16 textures and limited sound effects, but they still fit the game perfictly. more complex games require more complex textures and effects.
as for the story in games, it also depends on what game it is, take minecraft for example.. it doesnt provide a story but leaves it up to the player decide what his/her story will be.
I completely agree with you Spencer. I think that there is a misunderstanding though I think that people confuse GOOD graphics with realistic graphics like for example with minecraft it's not that it has bad graphics it's that it has its own style that's not the realistic style and I think that's what people mean by it has ''bad'' graphics.
I like what your saying I always thort the graphics in minecraft was to enhance the game ( one side comment you have a longwinded way of saing nothing ) still your ideas are good your delivery needs work tho hope it helps.
Everything matter in games, the sounds, the graphics and the story are what most people focus on while playing to decide if the game is great or not, but i would say that you should try to take every aspect of the game into thought before you say a game sucks after playing for a seconds and only see bad graphics. In other words, don't judge a game by it's cover.
Games now are trying to be real when there not and I have to stop playing them because it hurts my eyes when I play them but minecraft is so easy on the eyes.
I agree with you It's not that MineCraft graphics are "bad" they are just very simplistic, but thats what is so magical about the game. Once again MinecCraft also has no story yet I can spend hours upon hours playing it. In my opinion tho that is due to the fact of how I view it, I see it as I'm creating my own story with no guide lines no invisible walls that stop me from going that way or killing that.guy or thing.
And as for the "order of importance" well im out of room Ill continue if asked.
I think that graphics only matter in some games, such as Left 4 Dead (which may be a bad example since spencer dislikes L4D). If Left 4 Dead had horrible graphics then it would not give the player the same feeling of actually being in a zombie hell and it would be much less appealing. But other games, such as pong or a game like that does not need amazing graphics, story, or sound, they just need a good gameplay.
@itarethetroll While the music does its job of not being intrusive to the experience, I disagree in saying it's anywhere close to what ties it all together. The simple, peaceful melodies do a good job of complementing the nature of the game, but Minecraft was Minecraft before C418 came into the picture.
@itarethetroll Well if you really enjoy the music, did you know you can buy the entire soundtrack through Bandcamp? It's only 4 bucks and has bonus tracks, so I'd definitely recommend it.
graphics do matter, else none of the studios out there would try to do better that their concurrents.
The thing is that today, games tends to be too focused on graphics and letting aside the gameplay and other parts of the game.
I personally prefer to play disgaea compared to final fantasy for example, as the first focuses on giving a good time while playing while the second try to have outstanding graphics.
I agree, but gameplay makes the game best to me. Graphics and sound are not necessary, but make it very much enjoyable. Story is very great, but if you had a game with bad gameplay and wonderful graphics, sound, and story, but it would be more of a movie than a game. However, graphics and sound are sometimes necessary for me to be compelled to play the game.
Spencer, I do indeed like to pick out specific elements, but I give the game an overall grade as if I was a reviewer. I would put all of the elements on a scale from 1-10 and grade each element. Like if sound was 5, but graphics, story, and game play where 10, I would like the game very much. Also, here
Graphics and visual style are two separate things. Graphics barely matter, but visual style is one of the most important aspects of a game. It's how games like the original Halo with beautiful wide-open spaces but comparatively crappy graphics won out against boring- looking indoor corridor shooters.
well, I think it's not so much about separating the game elements. For me the sound/music has the major impact on a game. But that's because it's the sound that affects me more. For some people it's the graphics, or story.
But as a general rule (yes separating things now), I would HAVE to say it's the gameplay. Definitely. You can't play a game with impossibly awful gameplay, no matter how beautiful it is. But a great well-flowing gameplay can make a not so pretty game turn out to be awesome.
@obscurecult I don't understand why people feel it's necessary to separate the elements, as if they're being forced to choose among them. Modern games have graphics, sound, and gameplay as a bare minimum. The reflexive need to break games down to their component parts is detrimental to progress in game criticism.
@deadworkersparty Hm yea I understand what you're saying. Like, when you get a game, you get a WORLD, full with graphics, sound, story and gameplay, and as the experience itself is of the whole thing, so it should be the understanding of the game and criticism.
Still, I think the industry itself is guilty of separating elements, as there's always games strongly merchandized for one of it's elements (usually graphics, but sometimes story or gameplay).
When people say 'graphics don't matter', the sentence can be read two ways. First, the way it's literally read, which is what I think you picked up on most. But I think what people were leaning more towards, was the other way of reading it, the sense that a game doesn't have to chug out HD 1080p graphics in order to be a good game. The graphics of a game should ALWAYS, fit the style the game intends to use, regardless of physical quality. Minecraft is the perfect example of this.
I think Minecraft has good graphics too. But there are other games (like Crysis) that have technically good graphics, but it is really boring. Had Crysis not had the good graphics, nobody would have cared. Minecraft is unique because it has good graphics (artistically) and good gameplay. In fact, when Gamespot did their GOTY voting, they would have a category for "Technical" and "Artistic" graphics.
Gameplay has to mix with graphics to make a proper game. An action game with a lot of backstory would mean that you have to have a static world and be able to identify objects easily. A world made out of blocks would not mix well with this.
But a game that doesn't NEED quick-paced action and the ability to identify enemies from miles away, but instead needs a dynamic world that is easy to edit, a blocky world would be perfect. And that's why the minecraft formula WORKS.
That's what I meant yesterday. What you called experience, and I called atmosphere, is a greater whole formed by the combination of elements like story and graphics, which gets better the better these elements fit and work together to create something awesome. Graphics matter, story matters, but a good combination can be formed with different distributions of importance to these elements, or even without some of them (Minecraft has no story for example).
The pixellated graphics is what most people see as bad graphics but pixellated graphics make minecraft so much more creative... and no pc in existence would be able to handle minecraft with top notch HD graphic... pixellated graphics also bring back that hint of nostalgia most new gamers see as bad... but you are perfectly right: you should judge the game as whole, not in seperate elements
I really felt that Minecraft's graphics were great since early Alpha. I've never thought about how terrible the graphics is until I hear rages from the internet.
I completely agree with your assessment of games needing their own visual style. Even games that are, shall we say, "graphics intensive", if they lack a unique style, they just end up looking like every other game in that genre. Call of Duty and every other modern or WW2-shooter demonstrates how to do it wrong. Something like, say, Borderlands, demonstrates doing it RIGHT.
If I like everything about a game except the sound. Am I not allowed to say that everything is good about this game but the sound? When you analyzing a game it is important to split the game up in several components.
"For me.. I can't think that way when I am playing a game. when I sit down to play a game I am not consciously dividing the game up into its component parts and judging each of them seperately"
I agree, personally I go for the experience as a whole. Minecraft has a good balance between visuals and game mechanics. Those blocks might not look as pretty as the terrain in a modern FPS, but you can't build a home out of heightmap data. When I see something cool in Minecraft, like a nice overhanging cliff or elaborate cave, well it's almost like it's for me - like I can decide what to do with it. We get freedom in Minecraft that we just don't get in other games.
I find the utter lack of continuity between what you're doing on screen an what you're saying makes it difficult to pay attention to what you're saying.
Aaaand I love good graphics. A great implimentation of story, or at least writing/dialogue, was Shadow Madness. Horrible graphics, even for its time, and the story wasn't EXACTLY something akin to Beyond Good and Evil, but I loved going to every NPC and talking to them because of the great stuff the game threw at me. I still can't believe I played through that game in a couple of weeks. D:
The only thing I would dislike about graphics I believe is something that poses a problem to my enjoyment of the game, mainly in a mechanics sense. Such as clipping, he 3D model not working right, things like that. I've had it happen in some games I've played, and it made the experience less enjoyable, if only for those parts. I guess it's not a big deal really, but I don't put much stock in what constitutes as the most important thing for a game. I love a good story.
First of all, I love MC and it's visual style and I agree with most of what you said, except for one thing.
You said, that you notice Sound only, when it's really good or really bad. Well, when you show MC to people not familiar with it, they always notice (and comment on) the graphics first. So in that regard, the graphics ARE bad. Just like the graphic of NES games is bad.
But, and that's what's important: Good games with bad graphics wouldn't get better with better graphics, but some of the good games with good graphics would get worse with worse graphic. I'm looking at you, almost every FPS of the last decade or so.
The only thing I hate about the graphics is when I've been playing a lot of a newer game with better graphics, then go to play an older game with "worse" graphics. I say "worse" because it's not necessarily worse, it's just that I was used to the better graphics and thus the older game looks worse even though it's not. For example, Half Life and Half Life 2.
Minecraft is amazing, I dont really care about the graphics or the sound of games. The only thing I look for in a game is Gameplay. Thats why I play games like: Pandora Saga.
personally the way i see it is that graphics don't hold water because a good game can have terrible graphic and a bad game can have amazing graphics and when you refer to graphics in your vid i think what you mean is graphical syle or at least that would seem more fitting from my prespective
last video you said story was important, this video you say "meshing" matters. make up your mind. there clearly is an order of of things which are more important then others.
Just a thought i wanna get out there. Mine craft has a very unque graphics style. I have not played such a interactive and thouroughly enjoyable game as it before in my life. Imagine how hard it would be to make a game like minecraft without the block method. You would have to break java and melt your computer basically. All in all though not once have I complained about graphics in any game I enjoyed.
The only thing I can ever think about is whether I'm enjoying the experience as a whole or not. It's never really been about any specific aspect of that jazz, although I do believe a healthy culmination of these categories are important. My opinion on gaming is if your not enjoying yourself or the challenge if any, then you're either doing it wrong or the game isn't good.
I won't like or dislike this vid because Some thing I agree with, and others I don't. I don't consider myself "Hardcore" I just don't care that much about graphics. But I agree with how much the visuals etc make the game.
For me since story is the most impotant thing it does still mean the other aspects of the game still need to be good, if a game has actual bad graphics i think that makes it hard for me to believe the story or even care about it in a way, if you know what i mean, kind of hard to explain.
ok my opinion is that if I am having fun with a game it's done well. If I have the time to think about what I like about the game,it's good, but they could do better. If I am rating the games different elements, it seems more like a half-asses effort of a game to me. For games like minecraft, now that you mention it, I think sure there is little to no story, but it's so open ended and the graphics are so stunning yet simplistic that the game feels better than I can describe to play.
I have to agree with what you say, the way everything mixes together in a game is probably the most important aspect of why one would play the game in the first place, not only the graphics or only the sound.
Basically, guys, he's trying to say that the graphics and the type of game needs to match. It's like proportions on a person or the measurements of a building.
@ItsKaisho That's not at all what I'm saying. I'm saying that the visuals of a game are an intrinsic property to that game, and neither the game nor visuals can be fairly judged taken separately from one another. Different argument altogether.
@deadworkersparty I think that's kind of how I saw what you were saying though. I guess, in a sense what I said was different. But, honestly, it's basically saying that everything needs to be taking as a whole, that's what you're saying but at the same time aren't you saying everything needs to match, in a sense? I mean, it needs to be whole but you notice if something stands out that represents it as "not whole" in a sense. So, doesn't that say you want everything to match with one another?
@ItsKaisho Not necessarily. I'm not convinced that graphics do need to "match," so to speak. When I hear that the graphics need to match, I interpret that to mean that visually a game needs to fit into an expected style, and I don't think I agree with that. Some of the more entertaining visual styles have been those that are completely unexpected. I think we only say a graphic style matches after the fact, once we've grown used to it.
@deadworkersparty That's true, because a game like team fortress which is a first person shooter has very cartoon-like graphics as opposed to the expect realistic graphics. I guess I can compare it to how I've viewed signature art. Most people prefer rectangle as to I often prefer non-rectangles and signatures that still work but are different and others may find different but I feel like they can still work as a whole.. Is that the better understanding?
If the game relies on graphics it make a good game better but minecraft is a game with good plot : build but the block art is really good graphics any way look at the blocks and see for your self
I guess the type of game and the intended audience all have a certain graphics style that is appropriate. Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress and - what I've played - pixel flash games all have unique graphic styles that are suited for their gameplay.
I think that the mesh is important but anyone element can dominate the game if it is so much better than the rest of the game. EX: I made a game with zombie in it- I only play for the sound yet normally the sound means nothing to me. SO I dont think that you can describe what makes a game good or bad with words.
Minecraft has great graphics. Want something poor? Play Doom compared to today's standards. Also an interesting note is Minecraft can't play well on old computers, it's too, amazingly enough, graphics intensive for older computers to play.
Personally I think it's a package. A bad game for me is something that has nothing redeemable. I think Call of Duty World at War is a bad game, and Modern Warfare was worse. But I find Minecraft, MIrrors Edge, Half Life 2, and Team Fortress 2 the best.
The graphics and the structure of minecraft and other games is what makes that game what it truly is. With out minecrafts boxy look and almost arcade, lack of a better word, looking graphics in my opinion would take away from the creativity of a game like minecraft. The type of graphics minecraft has allows the player to express themselves and take on block combine it with others to create something that actually looks good.
You are wrong, graphics are all about high resolution textures, lighting, shading, etc. Minecraft have a great ART, the graphics itself aren't impressive, but the art of the game is astounding, the feeling and emotion of the low resolution textures, blocks, etc.
Graphics can have short term appeal, sure, but once you're sucked into the atmosphere of a game, it is not going to make the game any more or less fun if it's pushing more polygons.
I think the only thing that's bad when it comes to graphics is when a game developer favors graphics over other elements as game play and story etc. People have forgotten that now since the current console generation has last for so long, but as soon as a new generation comes out we're going to see a flurry of games with pretty outsides and rotten insides again.
if you compare graphics between games offcourse only the newest games will seem to have good graphics but as you say its not about compareing the games and its not just graphics, its all in all the feeling you get when you play the game that matters, good vid btw
Graphics and graphic styles are all subjective as their based off of perception and to some extent art. So, do graphics matter? Yes. Can you quantify whether a game has advanced graphics. Yes. Can you objectively say that a game which uses higher end graphics is better than a game which doesn't. No. Perception of good graphics is all subjective.
@agudm1 Not entirely. Execution matters. It doesn't matter how appealing a game's art style is if there's tons of clipping, weird graphical bugs or just poor execution.
@deadworkersparty Definitely, execution and implementation need to be flawless regardless of High or Low end type graphics.
To me, the style of graphic (high end/low end) and how it ties in with story/purpose of the game is crucial as it deals with Immersion as well as the upholding of the "magic circle" within digital media.
TLDR Every aspect of the game is important, each part of the game influences (or should) the other areas. I agree that a game cannot be stripped down into individual parts
@hackstertheskater Really? Name a game without graphics, other than text adventures. Near as I can tell, it's pretty hard to have a game without graphics.
graphics are important, but not as important as story and gameplay. there are too many games, that are just supposed to look good, but the story and gameplay falls apart.
limbo is an example, where "simple" graphics can look stunning. also braid. and i dont need bloom and hdr in super meat boy.
for me, a game has to be fluent. i need to be able to dive in and just forget about controls and such. graphics are nice, but not so important.
Any game that has "good graphics" also has a high polygon count. minecraft has a very low polygon count, thusly it has low res textures. If you want high res textures, go play Eden for iphone. : /
Absolutely ANYTHING is possible in Minecraft.. With an hours build, or a week to a few weeks build.. however you think.. anything you can think of is possible.. If you can think it... IT IS POSSIBLE. If you disagree with me, Well you obviously haven't played the game nor have seen anything AWESOME built. It is a truly awesome game.. Thank you Markus Persson. You are one smart cookie. Thanks.
The reason why I play Minecraft is because the graphics give me the feeling I am playing a relaxing, simple game. I think the graphics are a big part of the reason why I play Minecraft. Crysis wouldn't be THAT awesome if it had the graphics from James Bond Goldeneye, for example. Whether you like a game or not, GRAPHICS WILL ALWAYS HAVE A BIG ROLE IN YOUR OPINION.
@nullsah I meant to mention Dwarf Fortress. It absolutely has a graphical style that many players come to love. It isn't traditional graphics by any stretch of the imagination, but people absolutely get a great deal of satisfaction from being able to read the code.
@deadworkersparty I'm not sure I agree. On one hand, ASCII is 100% functional; on the other, is it really possible to design a thing utterly devoid of style? It's pretty confusing to think about.
But what do you think about retro games, like for the snes?
I think that is what our problem is when the average xbox/ps3 gamer says the only thing that matters is the graphics. All of those people will be missing out on many gems because of their refusal to play some games with "unrealistic" graphics.
What people don't understand is that there is a difference between "Visual Graphics" and "Art Style". Minecraft has it's own "Art Style" that is different from the "Art Style" from Crysis. I do believe both have excellent Visual Graphics though.
I kinda agree, but still in my opinion if you play any certain game long enough you kind of get used to the graphics and start "not seeing them" for most of the time. I mean think about all the people who still play roguelikes or dwarf fortress with only ASCII graphics ;)
There is such a thing as 'bad' graphics, only ill designed ones. I think alot of the time when people talk about good graphics, they mean it in the sense it looks more lke real life, which alot of the time is not what the designer wants to put across. Minecraft for example, is'nt desgined to be like this world, it's not too serious, it shows a fun twist. I agree that for a game to be good in this sense, it has to be well designed and implemented to give the desired effect overall.
Minecraft has pretty standard opengl (or a java opengl equvialent) witch means it's pretty powerfull, the HD texture mods show that minecraft graphics are at the very least standard. The graphic style (witch is 8-bit inspired with cubes) was decided by notch's due to his limtations as a 3d modler/texture artist and for minecraft it works. The fact of the matter is, spencer is right graphics matter but only for the game type it's for not to the extent that everything must be super realistic.
Your server is simply AMAZING! I agree with what you are saying. It's better to have a even mesh of elements. Say you had a game with terrible graphics, but the sound was to die for; the game would just not play as nicely as if the sound were lower quality to match the graphics. This applies even more the other way around (awesome graphics, terrible sound).
In my opinion, graphics are one of the lowest points to work on, early on in the development of the game.
Content, story, etc should be main priority. goodGraphics are essential to public success, but shouldn't be considerd the talking point of any game :)
For yesterdays conversation i was gonna say that minecraft was a great game even without any story to it wat so ever.
As for the graphics i think that graphics do add a lot to a game it makes it more realistic and makes it more believable and i like putting high def texture packs when i play minecraft instead of the regular texture. thats just my two cents.
Also i love these daily spencers you do a great job of getting your fan base to interact with you nd i like that :)
Minecraft has excellent graphics for the type of game that it is. Where as if Crysis has the graphics of minecraft, it would Not be an excellent game.
How i think of a game...

But in the long run graphics don't matter to me.

p.s. if some dosent make sense it means i trailed off k
demolish238 8 months ago
You are right. A game should be judged by how well each element blends together. Let's be honest, minecraft's graphics aren't visually stunning. But that doesn't mean they are a negative aspect of the game. Without the block-y and pixel look of minecraft, the game would not be as good. That is why you can't judge a game on it's graphics alone. A game's visuals must meet the style of the game. A gritty FPS wouldn't be as good with minecraft's graphics and vice-versa.
Capiche2234 8 months ago
But sometimes the graphics matters a lot. Life a FPS... there is no FPS without the four factors. If a FPS don't have one factor no one like that game.
I play a lot of games... different categories...
CoD... Minecraft... IAO... Left 4 Dead... Portal 1 and 2... Half life 2... Mario... Gunz...
See....

Perilix 9 months ago
@Perilix Everyone keeps making this point, and I disagree. The graphics are what the player is looking at. Saying that you like the aesthetics but the graphics are bad is a cop out. Either you like the way a game looks or you don't, and any waffling on that point is missing the forest for the trees.
deadworkersparty 9 months ago
@deadworkersparty How exactly is it a cop out? You can still appreciate and love a game, even though you could see the graphics being sub-par on a technical level. I love how Minecraft looks but it still doesn't take away from the fact that there are a lot of games out there with much more "superior graphics".
Perilix 9 months ago
@Perilix The fact that you put "superior graphics" in quotes proves my point; the level of technical achievement is irrelevant to everyone except pedants. All that matters is whether or not a game's graphics are appealing. If you like the way a game looks, why bother with putting in a caveat that it's "sub-par" technically? It's trying to have it both ways, that you're hip enough to like good visual design, but still savvy enough to say it could be better. In short, a cop out.
deadworkersparty 9 months ago
I think gameplay matters more than graphics... because i love minecrafts gameplay but its graphics are bad but i still like it, ive met a couple people who hate minecraft just cause it has bad grapics.
Mooner171 9 months ago
@Mooner171 i loved cod black ops befor but now i think minecraft is better i love how the gameplay works but i also love the grafics in cod and i have played a game with a great story and couldent stop playing but if a game had them all and sound, music ect it would make a great game so if you say you dont care about one not true you may just love an other aspect more but you still mite like a game with that factor so if you cant say you dont care you probly mean you like anouther more.
demolish238 8 months ago
If you think Minecraft has bad graphics, first of all, go **** yourself, then get a HD texture pack!
Internet1001001 9 months ago

StyrofoamTuph 9 months ago
Graphics and Asthetics are different thing. Minecraft has CRAP graphics, but it works asthetically. The graphics suit the game, and that is why it looks good even though the graphics are crap.
T360RAliBean 9 months ago
"I will play any game regardless of its graphics" Well if you have a good game it doesn't matter if the graphics are pink and full of rainbows and with an art style inspired by Lisa Frank with Faeries, Dolphins, and Unicorns. Oh and don't forget about nu-wave 80's music playing in the background.
Rev0lutionary 9 months ago
I went into this video expecting the usual "I want hi-def rawr" zombie argument but this is actually very well-reasoned and spot-on, I *mostly* agree with this. However, I do think that some games really do break this mold with exceptional gameplay (for instance, Dwarf Fortress).
Toksyuryel 9 months ago
@Toksyuryel I agree with most of what he has said too, but I'm pretty sure that by good graphics he does not mean advanced graphics; so Dwarf Fortress has very good graphics to some people. I think he is saying it's good if you like it :)
bjcsupertortoise 9 months ago
@bjcsupertortoise I think most would agree that they've simply gotten used to Dwarf Fortress's "graphics". They are by no means good in either a technical sense or the stylistic sense advocated by this video. Even the creator acknowledges this. The purpose of what "graphics" there are currently is simply to make the game playable, the interface is just a rush job that is planned to be fixed later on down the road (MUCH later on down the road).
Toksyuryel 9 months ago
I have no problem judging every component differently. There are games that just plain suck if you take one aspect of it.
But I don't mind any one of them being crappy, as long as the overall feel is great. Some flash games are silly and boring, until you turn on the music and effects and it just takes the whole thing over the top.
Bottom line: You can judge the parts, but the sum migh be something much more.

Then there are games whose programmers spend all their time perfecting graphics at the expense of gameplay (like many Hollywood movies are now all about pyrotechnics and special effect and only a semblance of plot). IF they do not have other elements, they rarely last long.
elfbiter 10 months ago
I think it is the matter of what the game is about and what kind of games one is interested about. There are lot of people playing FreeCiv who do not care about the fact that there is no top-notch animation
To me, Minecraft is a building game with extras. It attracts people who want to build things (if only to blow them up later). The blocks with textures are the basic element that make that relatively easy but the apparently the average player still builds - at least for protection.
elfbiter 10 months ago
it just depends on what type of game it is, minecraft for example has only 16x16 textures and limited sound effects, but they still fit the game perfictly. more complex games require more complex textures and effects.
as for the story in games, it also depends on what game it is, take minecraft for example.. it doesnt provide a story but leaves it up to the player decide what his/her story will be.
Thekontako 10 months ago
I completely agree with you Spencer. I think that there is a misunderstanding though I think that people confuse GOOD graphics with realistic graphics like for example with minecraft it's not that it has bad graphics it's that it has its own style that's not the realistic style and I think that's what people mean by it has ''bad'' graphics.

Everything matter in games, the sounds, the graphics and the story are what most people focus on while playing to decide if the game is great or not, but i would say that you should try to take every aspect of the game into thought before you say a game sucks after playing for a seconds and only see bad graphics. In other words, don't judge a game by it's cover.
sirspawnalot 11 months ago

But other games, such as pong or a game like that does not need amazing graphics, story, or sound, they just need a good gameplay.

graphics do matter, else none of the studios out there would try to do better that their concurrents.
The thing is that today, games tends to be too focused on graphics and letting aside the gameplay and other parts of the game.

Eldonman101 11 months ago
Spencer, I do indeed like to pick out specific elements, but I give the game an overall grade as if I was a reviewer. I would put all of the elements on a scale from 1-10 and grade each element. Like if sound was 5, but graphics, story, and game play where 10, I would like the game very much. Also, here
Story
Graphics
Gameplay
Sound
SwammiSalamii 11 months ago
Graphics and visual style are two separate things. Graphics barely matter, but visual style is one of the most important aspects of a game. It's how games like the original Halo with beautiful wide-open spaces but comparatively crappy graphics won out against boring- looking indoor corridor shooters.
MarshmallowRadiation 11 months ago
well, I think it's not so much about separating the game elements.
But a great well-flowing gameplay can make a not so pretty game turn out to be awesome.
obscurecult 11 months ago 6
@obscurecult I don't understand why people feel it's necessary to separate the elements, as if they're being forced to choose among them. Modern games have graphics, sound, and gameplay as a bare minimum. The reflexive need to break games down to their component parts is detrimental to progress in game criticism.
deadworkersparty 11 months ago 7
@deadworkersparty Hm yea I understand what you're saying. Like, when you get a game, you get a WORLD, full with graphics, sound, story and gameplay, and as the experience itself is of the whole thing, so it should be the understanding of the game and criticism.
Still, I think the industry itself is guilty of separating elements, as there's always games strongly merchandized for one of it's elements (usually graphics, but sometimes story or gameplay).
obscurecult 11 months ago
When people say 'graphics don't matter', the sentence can be read two ways. First, the way it's literally read, which is what I think you picked up on most. But I think what people were leaning more towards, was the other way of reading it, the sense that a game doesn't have to chug out HD 1080p graphics in order to be a good game. The graphics of a game should ALWAYS, fit the style the game intends to use, regardless of physical quality. Minecraft is the perfect example of this.
TheWyo 11 months ago
I think Minecraft has good graphics too. But there are other games (like Crysis) that have technically good graphics, but it is really boring. Had Crysis not had the good graphics, nobody would have cared. Minecraft is unique because it has good graphics (artistically) and good gameplay. In fact, when Gamespot did their GOTY voting, they would have a category for "Technical" and "Artistic" graphics.
SoFarSoGoodSoWhat14 11 months ago
My opinion is identical to yours.
nomnomSam 11 months ago

I completely agree with your assessment of games needing their own visual style. Even games that are, shall we say, "graphics intensive", if they lack a unique style, they just end up looking like every other game in that genre. Call of Duty and every other modern or WW2-shooter demonstrates how to do it wrong. Something like, say, Borderlands, demonstrates doing it RIGHT.
eltanan 11 months ago
If I like everything about a game except the sound. Am I not allowed to say that everything is good about this game but the sound? When you analyzing a game it is important to split the game up in several components.
"For me.. I can't think that way when I am playing a game. when I sit down to play a game I am not consciously dividing the game up into its component parts and judging each of them seperately"
I do not believe that statement.
MrSanji168 11 months ago
I agree, personally I go for the experience as a whole. Minecraft has a good balance between visuals and game mechanics. Those blocks might not look as pretty as the terrain in a modern FPS, but you can't build a home out of heightmap data. When I see something cool in Minecraft, like a nice overhanging cliff or elaborate cave, well it's almost like it's for me - like I can decide what to do with it. We get freedom in Minecraft that we just don't get in other games.

Horrible graphics, even for its time, and the story wasn't EXACTLY something akin to Beyond Good and Evil, but I loved going to every NPC and talking to them because of the great stuff the game threw at me. I still can't believe I played through that game in a couple of weeks. D:
galenloire 11 months ago
The only thing I would dislike about graphics I believe is something that poses a problem to my enjoyment of the game, mainly in a mechanics sense. Such as clipping, he 3D model not working right, things like that. I've had it happen in some games I've played, and it made the experience less enjoyable, if only for those parts. I guess it's not a big deal really, but I don't put much stock in what constitutes as the most important thing for a game. I love a good story.
galenloire 11 months ago
First of all, I love MC and it's visual style and I agree with most of what you said, except for one thing.
You said, that you notice Sound only, when it's really good or really bad. Well, when you show MC to people not familiar with it, they always notice (and comment on) the graphics first. So in that regard, the graphics ARE bad. Just like the graphic of NES games is bad.
CorakYT 11 months ago
@CorakYT
But, and that's what's important: Good games with bad graphics wouldn't get better with better graphics, but some of the good games with good graphics would get worse with worse graphic. I'm looking at you, almost every FPS of the last decade or so.
CorakYT 11 months ago
The only thing I hate about the graphics is when I've been playing a lot of a newer game with better graphics, then go to play an older game with "worse" graphics. I say "worse" because it's not necessarily worse, it's just that I was used to the better graphics and thus the older game looks worse even though it's not. For example, Half Life and Half Life 2.

For me since story is the most impotant thing it does still mean the other aspects of the game still need to be good, if a game has actual bad graphics i think that makes it hard for me to believe the story or even care about it in a way, if you know what i mean, kind of hard to explain.
PenginUchuu 11 months ago
ok my opinion is that if I am having fun with a game it's done well.

Basically, guys, he's trying to say that the graphics and the type of game needs to match. It's like proportions on a person or the measurements of a building.
ItsKaisho 11 months ago
@ItsKaisho That's not at all what I'm saying. I'm saying that the visuals of a game are an intrinsic property to that game, and neither the game nor visuals can be fairly judged taken separately from one another. Different argument altogether.
deadworkersparty 11 months ago 8
@deadworkersparty I think that's kind of how I saw what you were saying though. I guess, in a sense what I said was different. But, honestly, it's basically saying that everything needs to be taking as a whole, that's what you're saying but at the same time aren't you saying everything needs to match, in a sense? I mean, it needs to be whole but you notice if something stands out that represents it as "not whole" in a sense. So, doesn't that say you want everything to match with one another?
ItsKaisho 11 months ago
@ItsKaisho Not necessarily. I'm not convinced that graphics do need to "match," so to speak. When I hear that the graphics need to match, I interpret that to mean that visually a game needs to fit into an expected style, and I don't think I agree with that. Some of the more entertaining visual styles have been those that are completely unexpected. I think we only say a graphic style matches after the fact, once we've grown used to it.
deadworkersparty 11 months ago
@deadworkersparty That's true, because a game like team fortress which is a first person shooter has very cartoon-like graphics as opposed to the expect realistic graphics. I guess I can compare it to how I've viewed signature art. Most people prefer rectangle as to I often prefer non-rectangles and signatures that still work but are different and others may find different but I feel like they can still work as a whole.. Is that the better understanding?
ItsKaisho 11 months ago

JouninAkisa 11 months ago
I think that the mesh is important but anyone element can dominate the game if it is so much better than the rest of the game. EX: I made a game with zombie in it- I only play for the sound yet normally the sound means nothing to me. SO I dont think that you can describe what makes a game good or bad with words.
GhamTk 11 months ago
Minecraft has great graphics. Want something poor? Play Doom compared to today's standards. Also an interesting note is Minecraft can't play well on old computers, it's too, amazingly enough, graphics intensive for older computers to play.
Personally I think it's a package. A bad game for me is something that has nothing redeemable. I think Call of Duty World at War is a bad game, and Modern Warfare was worse. But I find Minecraft, MIrrors Edge, Half Life 2, and Team Fortress 2 the best.
OriginalAlphathewolf 11 months ago
The graphics and the structure of minecraft and other games is what makes that game what it truly is. With out minecrafts boxy look and almost arcade, lack of a better word, looking graphics in my opinion would take away from the creativity of a game like minecraft. The type of graphics minecraft has allows the player to express themselves and take on block combine it with others to create something that actually looks good.
ConnMovieMakers 11 months ago
You are wrong, graphics are all about high resolution textures, lighting, shading, etc. Minecraft have a great ART, the graphics itself aren't impressive, but the art of the game is astounding, the feeling and emotion of the low resolution textures, blocks, etc.
InsYami 11 months ago
to me the only time story doesnt matter is in sandbox games. Gmod, Minecraft, parts of GTA
stickfigure101 11 months ago
@stickfigure101 GTA IV's brown and bloom completely ruined it for me ;/
Jesusability 11 months ago
Graphics can have short term appeal, sure, but once you're sucked into the atmosphere of a game, it is not going to make the game any more or less fun if it's pushing more polygons.

minecraft would not be minecraft if it wasn't blocky
JPMHUDProductions 11 months ago
I think the only thing that's bad when it comes to graphics is when a game developer favors graphics over other elements as game play and story etc. People have forgotten that now since the current console generation has last for so long, but as soon as a new generation comes out we're going to see a flurry of games with pretty outsides and rotten insides again.
PJmorrisify 11 months ago
If the graphic really piss people off that much get an hd texture pack
pingpong1138 11 months ago
the graphics arent bad when you consider how big the worlds are
garrettjonesca 11 months ago
Graphics do not matter. The only things that matter are the art style and how the game presents itself.
RecoveryZ3R0 11 months ago
if you compare graphics between games offcourse only the newest games will seem to have good graphics but as you say its not about compareing the games and its not just graphics, its all in all the feeling you get when you play the game that matters, good vid btw
Maund001 11 months ago
Well first you need to define "good".
Graphics and graphic styles are all subjective as their based off of perception and to some extent art. So, do graphics matter? Yes. Can you quantify whether a game has advanced graphics. Yes. Can you objectively say that a game which uses higher end graphics is better than a game which doesn't. No. Perception of good graphics is all subjective.
agudm1 11 months ago
@agudm1 Not entirely. Execution matters. It doesn't matter how appealing a game's art style is if there's tons of clipping, weird graphical bugs or just poor execution.
deadworkersparty 11 months ago
@deadworkersparty Definitely, execution and implementation need to be flawless regardless of High or Low end type graphics.
To me, the style of graphic (high end/low end) and how it ties in with story/purpose of the game is crucial as it deals with Immersion as well as the upholding of the "magic circle" within digital media.
TLDR Every aspect of the game is important, each part of the game influences (or should) the other areas. I agree that a game cannot be stripped down into individual parts

How cant gameplay be on the top of the list. There is no game without any gameplay
hackstertheskater 11 months ago
@hackstertheskater Really? Name a game without graphics, other than text adventures. Near as I can tell, it's pretty hard to have a game without graphics.
deadworkersparty 11 months ago
@deadworkersparty umm he wasnt saying anything about graphics, jsut gameplay.
FoxCat5531 11 months ago
@hackstertheskater What if the user creates the game play with the elements on the game? (Cant word this how I would like too.)

Graphics do IMO play a large roll in games. They're generally kind of like a mold for the game itself, e.g:
Games in which you have to be alert in to be able to play, often has good and intense graphics (COD:MW2, BF:BC2, Crysis, etc).
Chill and relaxing games on the other hand, often has bad graphics, such as GTA:SA, Pokémon, Minecraft, etc.
RudenZtam 11 months ago
Excellent points, well made. Nice one, Spencer!
Astragali 11 months ago
graphics are important, but not as important as story and gameplay. there are too many games, that are just supposed to look good, but the story and gameplay falls apart.
limbo is an example, where "simple" graphics can look stunning. also braid. and i dont need bloom and hdr in super meat boy.
for me, a game has to be fluent. i need to be able to dive in and just forget about controls and such. graphics are nice, but not so important.
AllNameAreGone 11 months ago
Yay! I was noticed!
And I do agree, but the individual parts I notice in the order I gave.
Kickerofthetar 11 months ago
Any game that has "good graphics" also has a high polygon count. minecraft has a very low polygon count, thusly it has low res textures. If you want high res textures, go play Eden for iphone. : /
rerere284 11 months ago
I cannot stand people who won't even try a game because of "bad graphics"
I have a friend who won't play Deus Ex because of this, his entire opinion of the game is based on screenshots.
SirJc1113 11 months ago
Minecraft made blocks rock.
Its so simple and friendly to the eye.
If the graphics fit, use them.

Thanks.
19NoNuM85 11 months ago
The reason why I play Minecraft is because the graphics give me the feeling I am playing a relaxing, simple game. I think the graphics are a big part of the reason why I play Minecraft. Crysis wouldn't be THAT awesome if it had the graphics from James Bond Goldeneye, for example. Whether you like a game or not, GRAPHICS WILL ALWAYS HAVE A BIG ROLE IN YOUR OPINION.
jaycarmine 11 months ago
I agree with you completely

Two words: Dwarf Fortress.
nullsah 11 months ago
@nullsah I meant to mention Dwarf Fortress. It absolutely has a graphical style that many players come to love. It isn't traditional graphics by any stretch of the imagination, but people absolutely get a great deal of satisfaction from being able to read the code.
deadworkersparty 11 months ago
@deadworkersparty I'm not sure I agree. On one hand, ASCII is 100% functional; on the other, is it really possible to design a thing utterly devoid of style? It's pretty confusing to think about.
nullsah 11 months ago
But what do you think about retro games, like for the snes?
I think that is what our problem is when the average xbox/ps3 gamer says the only thing that matters is the graphics. All of those people will be missing out on many gems because of their refusal to play some games with "unrealistic" graphics.
guitarskills2 11 months ago
What people don't understand is that there is a difference between "Visual Graphics" and "Art Style". Minecraft has it's own "Art Style" that is different from the "Art Style" from Crysis. I do believe both have excellent Visual Graphics though.
HomieT23 11 months ago
I kinda agree, but still in my opinion if you play any certain game long enough you kind of get used to the graphics and start "not seeing them" for most of the time. I mean think about all the people who still play roguelikes or dwarf fortress with only ASCII graphics ;)
crescendx 11 months ago
There is such a thing as 'bad' graphics, only ill designed ones. I think alot of the time when people talk about good graphics, they mean it in the sense it looks more lke real life, which alot of the time is not what the designer wants to put across. Minecraft for example, is'nt desgined to be like this world, it's not too serious, it shows a fun twist. I agree that for a game to be good in this sense, it has to be well designed and implemented to give the desired effect overall.
1arrow24 11 months ago
Minecraft has pretty standard opengl (or a java opengl equvialent) witch means it's pretty powerfull, the HD texture mods show that minecraft graphics are at the very least standard. The graphic style (witch is 8-bit inspired with cubes) was decided by notch's due to his limtations as a 3d modler/texture artist and for minecraft it works. The fact of the matter is, spencer is right graphics matter but only for the game type it's for not to the extent that everything must be super realistic.
quickshot14 11 months ago
Your server is simply AMAZING! I agree with what you are saying. It's better to have a even mesh of elements. Say you had a game with terrible graphics, but the sound was to die for; the game would just not play as nicely as if the sound were lower quality to match the graphics. This applies even more the other way around (awesome graphics, terrible sound).
Yuke1 11 months ago
It's not how many pixels, it's what you do with them.
Skelables 11 months ago 7
I think that no matter what happens the graphics in Minecraft should stay the same lol
BasementStudios2 11 months ago
In my opinion, graphics are one of the lowest points to work on, early on in the development of the game.
Content, story, etc should be main priority. goodGraphics are essential to public success, but shouldn't be considerd the talking point of any game :)
AthelStanVideos 11 months ago
For yesterdays conversation i was gonna say that minecraft was a great game even without any story to it wat so ever.
As for the graphics i think that graphics do add a lot to a game it makes it more realistic and makes it more believable and i like putting high def texture packs when i play minecraft instead of the regular texture. thats just my two cents.
Also i love these daily spencers you do a great job of getting your fan base to interact with you nd i like that :)
DemonofRazgriz92 11 months ago
Games only matter if you enjoy it, thats why it's a game.
smoothyfps 11 months ago
Minecraft has excellent graphics for the type of game that it is. Where as if Crysis has the graphics of minecraft, it would Not be an excellent game.
redtail0202 11 months ago 53
@redtail0202 and that's why the importance of different element in difference games will always varies.
Like in a fps, the most important would be gameplay, graphics and sound.
That's not true for minecraft, it's just gameplay, it's almost like a puzzle getting the elements right.
