I saw this movie 30 years ago and the only scene I remember is this one. It put a lump in my throat then as it does now. His beautiful voice stole that movie!
just watching the wanders with Erland van Lidth in it. amazed to read he actually sang this song. just goes to show you dont have to be beautiful like most require these days to be a singer to make beautiful music.
a sad shame people in the music business go for looks more than singing ability now
I was playing this tonight on my new Fender Accoustic Guitar My beautiful lady got me for xmas. When I finished, the phone rang. It was my father telling me that Gram just passed away in the hospital at 97 yrs old. Although I weep, and it is our loss, comfort comes in the thought that she suffers no more and is with the good lord! Rest in peace Gram, we all miss you already!
I've just come up with a new game! I call it ' Williams Or Wilder'. Think of a film in which either Robin or Gene has been in, and decide if the other would do a better job if cast in that film. This idea may grow, it may flounder, but if it works I won't make any money! Bastards! Question 1: Robin Williams as Willy Wonka?
I met Erland in 1976, at the MIT dormitory East Campus. I was a freshman, and he lived in the floor above me. (he was 4th West, I think). He was a computer science major; I was proceeding towards a chemistry degree. He was an amateur wrestler: The story was that all he needed to do was to SIT on his opponent: Match over!
@jimdbell I just read about him, wow such an amazing persion, he juggled wrestling, opera, film and computing. So amazing, RIP Big Man and you too Mr Pryor (he never ceases to make me laugh)
This actor should have been a singer. Maybe he didn't get a break. His voice has a haunting sound that could have been a top seller with the write music. I hope he's still singing, and would like to hear more from him.
i didnt even know he was dead. r.i.p 'groceberger'. you were part of an 80's classic and had a an angelic voice. sing those angels right outta heaven man! p.s - i know it was you singing in the movie - some people are just idiots.
I wonder if there's a soundtrack to this movie, and if so where to get that cd? I've looked on the net but all deadends. This is one of the most beautiful version of this song ever made. This one falls into the legends with songs like Danny Boy and Tir na Noir.
when this film was made there was kind of a sound engineer/recording technitian strike/dispute going on.
so while they could not record him singing it "live" on set they had to use a recording of him singing it prior to film recording.BUT it IS him singing it just not live on set.
I like the stunned face of Gene Wilder when Erland starts to sing. And as Richard Pryor croons the song...It`s the best movie song I`ve ever heard! There`s no doubt, Erland van Lidth de Jeude was one of the greatest singers.
definitely one of my favorite films of all time, and i didnt realise grossberger actually sung this part himself till i looked it up today, im well impressed, its so beautiful
His actual voice wasn't used for the song, "Down in the Valley", in the film. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 1980, he wasn't able to record the song himself, so they used the pre-recorded track to which he had sung the song during the filming in the final print of the movie.
wot a talented geezer- a qualified opera singer, computer genius and an actor- starred in "warriors" "stir crazy" and "running man". Died not long after finishing running man- RIP big fella
