In my head the Upstarts did 'I'm An Upstart' on TOTP - or is that only in my head?
Also, the vinyl copy of Liddle Towers weighs as much as a decent frying pan. AU were for me the last of the few - after this lot it all went a bit right wing, shame.
It really fucks me off seeing old school bands like this. Where are the new ones? They've all been killed off by fucking Cowell and other wankers commercialising the music industry to death.
You star for posting this. I climbed over fences and ran for home to see this on TOTP. I felt so angry then and still do now well into middle age! Grumpy old me warning!!!!
Do any Upstarts fans know of a show in the late 70s or early 80s where they played live and Mensi wore a white top, maybe Riverside? It was a youth show and they played either one or two tracks.
Thomas Mensforth Junior was a very good pal of mine at this time. He ended up hating pursey cos pursenatcher ripped them off.....best band ive ever seen live !
well they were mates with jimmy pursey..he perhaps helped produce them or something but i think mensi did the lyrics..who else would've been angry enough
...that is mad. Saw Angelic Upstarts at Tops of the Pops the day of this video. Gary Numan and the Flying Lizards too I think...can't remember who else. We were only young....ended up in the BBC bar later and had a drink with the Angelic Upstarts....not very punk rock appearing on TOTPs tho lads!!
Just watching on german TV a "Best Of" of TOTP. They're showing shows before the date i was born. Thought i would see some good old rocksongs, if i watch it. And than i see this great Oi!-song. Never heard the name Angelic Upstars. And i'm so glad to know them now. Have to search for a CD.
God damn it and two songs later they showed Sham 69 -You're A Better Man Than I.
Oi at TOPT, how great! Didn't even know that Punkbands played at TOPT.
Every time I hear this I'm reminded of how the anger i felt then is exactly the same as the anger I feel now. Nothing has really changed as I have the same enemies now as I had then. OPEN THE CAGE...............
saw em live in doncaster in 81. the council put on a free gig for the yoof! local punks copped a battering from skins from all over the region. I was only 12 but loved it!!! loved skins and Oi but not right wing shite. now living in Oz and just answered my daughters question of 'what was the first gig you went to see dad?!!!'' Quality
@ozcooky wa hay i was there battliing with the skinheads id forgotten about it i was only 18 my self it was funny i had to hide on a bus but the upstarts were ace i remember the drummer wading in with the drum stool getting stuck in u wouldnt see cold play doing that hey me girlfreind of the time blew me out for fighting back beat that any way fanx fir reminding me ha ha lucky bleeder living in oz
This really shows my age, but this was first album I ever bought, and still love it. Have teenagers into newbie pop, if only they could get into this my life work would be done!!
Saw these in the Rock Garden Middlesbrough in 78 or 79 Good gig esp when he chopped the pigs head up. Good fight with the geordies after the gig too..ohh memories
I saw the Upstarts a lot of times in Leeds in the 80's an Mensi was a great bloke, but I cant remember this from TOTP? Mind you TOPT was a pile of shite, thank fuck its gone.
Somebody needs to post "Liddle" on here, and totalstranga, try to get your your hands on "Teenage Warning" you dont need to be a teen to enjoy the music, just turn uo the volume and go mental.
Police killed Liddle Towers, drunk and disorderly was his crime and to make it worse he should be doing time but he's DEAD! he was drunk and disorderly and now he's DEAD!
It's "I think at worst he should be doing time" not what you put. That just doesn't make sense!!!!!
Police killed Liddle Towers, drunk and disorderly was his crime I THINK AT WORST he should be doing time but he's DEAD! he was drunk and disorderly and now he's DEAD!
Saw them at the Great Yarmouth Garabaldi in 79 on the teenage warning tour it was a great nite as remember but then again I was only 14 and a nite spent wanking over porno mags seemed like a great nite..... it still does sumtimes :-)
i remember being 13 and listening to the upstarts along with the cockney rejects they always played the olympic auditorium in the 80's ,any english lymie were all spit on anyway, cool, fuck the slippers and i'll keep my pookiePUNKSNOTDEAD! genius indeed dont be a bloody ranker i mean wanker
32 years old and I'd never heard/seen these guys before now. I only knew that they were like Sham 69 from what I'd read. But this is excellent and if I was a teen again I'm sure I'd LOVE this band. Also reminds me a bit of Slade for some reason
@totalstranga mensi (the singer) was certainly influenced by slade they did`nt play as fast as sham but their sound was tougher and mensi was genuine blue collar he worked in the mines for a while
when I was 13 I though that this record was a work of genius: a sort of proficy of a teenage uprising. Now that I'm 42 it just seems a bit sad, and not as I remeber. Oh well, where's my pipe 'n' slippers.
They were from South Shields, so that makes em Sand Dancers. Mensi is a Sunderland fan, not Newcastle United. Sunderland ppl are called Mackems, not Geordies.

I was just a wee snapper of a lad then. Upstarts were playing Bollingbrook Hall and other local venues(South Shields). I mised out cos of a bunch of wankers called Red Alert who kept sending bomb alerts to the coppers !
Been an Upstart since i can ever remeber. Still got my John Pel seesion tape of the (original Upstarts). Shsme theyre no more RIP AnGeliC UpstartS ... Im Still "Out of Control" Oh and Belly (Keith) is still shit scared of his own past / shadow !!! Ha Ha
I can't believe it. When I was a young "punk" in 1979, this song used to scare the piss out of me. Mensi has a powerful, yet frighteningly serious vocals. Thanks for this post...it's a shame Mensi is calling it quits. Long live the Angelic Upstarts!
