  • I like how he says "I don't have any friends on here yet" and he almost sounds like he's about to cry.

  • Do you think Jolicloud will be more successful than Chrome OS?

  • @theif519 quite possibly, but I think Chrome OS will have more marketing behind it, so it's got a better chance.

  • I'm trying out version 1.2 on my desktop in it's own partition. It installed easily, I added apps that I liked and rebooted. Instead of desktop icons I have solid bars of color across where the icons would be. Checking Jolicloud support, I found and used their restore utility. Unfortunately, it made no difference. Maybe I'm the only one having this problem, or there is no fix for this.

  • puttin on my AO1

  • Has the poor battery life been fixed? How does it compare to XP? Last I heard XP got much better battery life than Linux.

  • @asdfxyz1 that really depends on the hardware itself, and the drivers the manufacturer has made available. For some people, they actually get better battery life with Linux than they do in Windows. for others, not so much.

  • @asdfxyz1 intall it, try it, if it sucks just uninstall it...

  • I was very interested to find Jolicloud on the Chrome Web Store. Not all the apps work obviously, but it's nice to have a "try before you buy" approach.

  • can you change the jolicloud theme? and why dont you dont you just put all your favorite netbook operating systems on your netbook?? lol

  • @chickenpotpie1216 With version 1.0, you couldn't change much of anything. With 1.1 (there's a video review of it on my channel) you can change the wallpaper, but not really anything else.

    Sadly, I don't have a netbook anymore. :(

  • @thisweekinlinux oh that kinda sucks, but if its open source, couldn't someone more tech savvy than myself make it more customizable? and what happened to your netbook, you put windows on it? ahaha linux humor

  • @chickenpotpie1216 I'm sure it's technically possible, I just haven't tried it personally, or read about anyone who has.

  • thanks buddy

    you're awesome man

  • Jolicloud or Ubuntu Netbook Edition? what do you think..

  • @tazz1418 you'll have more software options with Ubuntu Netbook, but I like the Jolicloud interface. They're both free, they both have live CD/USB options. Try them and see which one you like. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux thanks for the response, I'll try them both and let you know it went.

  • @tazz1418 Awesome! If you're up to it, it would be cool to see a video about your experiences. :)

  • They need to upgrade JoliCloud to at least Ubuntu 9.10... it's not supported by Ubuntu now

  • @74ryanwolf Jolicloud 1.1 is available now, and its' based on 10.04

  • woot, a new version 1.1 is almost out!

  • i would like to see some of these social features in ubuntu, but in the meanwhile it works great, totally recommend it!

  • omg this ia beautiful.. im trying it now!!

  • Comment removed

  • i downloaded it on and with the windows installer it takes a long time but i like to use jolicloud on a dualboot and it is way better then then a virtual machene i got it on a dual boot 2 weeks ago

  • @TechForNoobies it ran pretty smoothly for me within Virtualbox, so I'd assume the same for VMWare.

It's actually already available on their site.

If you want to run it in a VM, you can just download the iso and do it that way. Probably best if you want to test it before actually installing it somewhere.

  • @TechForNoobies I ran it in a VM, and tested it on my netbook a while back.

  • @xXkazumaruXx Good to know, thanks! :)

  • After using jolicloud for a week, I am going back to ubuntu. It has a lot of bugs. Though this can be solved, there are few issues with the main concept itself : Just open an app there, say youtube.. You won't be able to Go backward, you will have to right click everytime.. they altered the function of the 'menu' button near right-ctrl to display the gnome menu.. The app-sync is nothing but bookmarks (but in python)..

It would be good if its like launching desktop apps with python interface.

  • @mohanr2222 Hmm, interesting. Thanks for mentioning that. Have you asked about it on their Get Satisfaction page? They might not realize it's not working correctly.

  • @thisweekinlinux I would have mentioned if it was a bug.. Or a problem with jolicloud team's programming. this prob came along even with mozilla's Prism and Chrome's "app shortcuts".. Its a prob with the concept.. So I didn't open my mouth about this in the get satisfaction page.. Cuz they might feel bad.. :(

  • @mohanr2222 ohhh, I see. Sorry, I must have misread your earlier comment. I see now, you said it was a problem with the concept, and not jolicloud specific. Hmm. Perhaps there's a different backend they could be using?

  • @thisweekinlinux Currently they are using something called nickel (as mentioned in getsatisfaction pages and the jolicloud website, though the "about" page of the browser actually shows it as "chromium jolicloud"). It is a tweaked version of chromium. So if at all there is another backend they could use, They won't shift to it due to compatibility issues and the programming effort spent on nickel..

  • @mohanr2222 well that's rough. it's been a while since I used Jolicloud, but I guess I must have missed the issue about going backward. I'll have to load up Jolicloud in a vm again and see what you mean.

  • @thisweekinlinux What i mean is.. "prism apps don't have navigation buttons" And jolicloud uses the chromium version of prism.. So you can just check ur chrome browser ( i can see tht u use chrome). Create an application shortcut and you will find that there aren't any navigation buttons..

  • @mohanr2222 Oh, I see... hm. For some reason I haven't really done that before.

It looks like Alt + Left/Right arrow works on it, so that's an option for going forward/backward, but not a great one.

  • Hi guys. I am dying to try a linux distro on my netbook which is lenovo s-10 2. I am confused either to go for ubuntu netbook edition or jolicloud. Can anyone give suggestions please!!! thanks in advance

  • @ahsan366 That depends on what you want to do. At the end of the day they're both based on Ubuntu, so they should perform similarly. Ubuntu Netbook Edition should have more software available, but Jolicloud has a nice look and feel, with a long list of "cloud-based" apps you can "install" (sort of like bookmarks you can put on your desktop).

If you have the bandwidth and the time, try them both!

  • Wait I mean his OS

  • @charmil72 It's fedora :P

  • it looks just like Ubuntu Netbook remix... I can't see the difference... only the cloud based apps...

  • @chaemil72 well, it's a new interface, html5-based. At the end of the day it's definitely just Ubuntu with a new interface and package manager (sort of).

  • you use incompetech loops too!

  • @KingofComputing I do indeed. Kevin MacLeod is amazing!

  • it sounds so fucken good but looks abit gay

  • @MrJ0mmy I've seen that word a few too many times in my comments lately, and using it in a demeaning way is not very nice.

I'm definitely a fan of Jolicloud, and I agree that they could make some improvements to the default color scheme, but I kinda like it. easy on the eyes.

  • The German Wikipedia Site says that it's based on 9.10.

  • @Exdozolie Interesting. I got an email from one of the Jolicloud employees after I did the review, and he said it's based on 9.04 with some packages from 9.10 and 10.04.

  • can i add any application that is in Ubuntu repositories? If i want Osmo can i get it?

    another nice video.

  • @ctsfiddler in theory, you should be able to install applications from the default Ubuntu repositories. Keep in mind though, the default repositories included are from Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty), so you might have to either add PPAs or update the repositories, and I'm not sure if that would break the system or not.

  • weeeell, i'll subscribe to you, I'm a linux enthusiast, and I love to see reviews and cool software

  • @emucosmos thanks so much!

  • ahh i see altitude on ur desktop :P

  • @juanharu13 you do indeed. :)

  • Do u think it's a good OS for daily usage?

  • @Peppe1585 That depends on what you do daily. A lot of people do mostly web-based things and some limited Office-style things. For that, it's awesome. For more in-depth things, like gaming, video editing, etc. perhaps no.

  • Thanks for the review.

  • It's seems interesting, I'll installed in my netbook. Thanks for so interesting review

  • @Tebibyte240 awesome! Hope you enjoy it.

  • Looks impressive, good review and great background music...

  • @sirpecangum thanks a ton!

  • O.K is Joli cloud only made for net books only or could it be used on a good old fashion lap top? It would be nice if these distributions would follow Linux mint's example and inform people what laptop brand can install I'E Joli cloud with no problem.

  • @Freespire44 it's intended for netbooks, but it might work on laptops. They have a compatibility page here: jolicloud. com/product/compatibility

  • I made a C.D copy of jolicloud and, I have to admit I'M very impressed. however even though it could easily install on my Dell INSPIRON 15 I'M some what Leary that it's WIFI setup could work with the dell inspiron 15 Wifi card. Right now I'm using crunch bang Linux 9.04 and it works great for Wifi all I have to do is one click, and a whole list of wireless net works appear ,and TA DA I can surf the net from Strar Bucks etc.

  • I might try this on my netbook but I still really prefer to have a regular OS on it. This may have been because I only tried Ubuntu netbook remix 10.04

The distro looks somewhat more interesting than what I tried before. Will most likely try this and MeeGo aswell.

  • @roflschofel awesome. I'm still up in the air as to what to put on my netbook. Too many awesome netbook distros...

  • html5 <3 :3 i bet you could add newer ubuntu repo's and ubuntu tweak i mean it is an ubuntu deb system :)

  • @nolanhester1 I'd say that's a definite possibility. From what they've told me, it's running Jaunty/Debian packages, but they've added some Karmic and Lucid as well.

  • html 5 <3 does it have a terminal available? i would hope so, you could probably add ubuntu tweak hehe

  • @nolanhester1 there's definitely a terminal, Alt + F1.

  • @cjclaxon I made a video on the subject here youtube.com/watch?v=87VQx6hvJm4

  • i still cannot figure out how to uninstall applications....chromium is greyed out...

  • @logitek256 I was able to uninstall applications, but I didn't try uninstalling Chromium. I just tried it, and it looks like Chromium just can't be removed. It's the default browser, and the main way all the web apps open, so I'd assume that's by design.

  • @thisweekinlinux - I see...so that is why the icon is greyed out? But even Adobe Air is greyed out... I was thinking the reason was the upgrade..infact I didn't even know I there is a remove when you right click on an application....

  • @logitek256 I didn't have Air installed, so I'm not sure about that, but I would have to assume it has to do with not allowing the user to pull out items that other applications depend on.

  • SEXYSEXYSEXYSEXY WANTWANTWANTWANT

    'Nuff said.

  • Downloading!

  • audio is ahead of video ( video and audio are not sync) you should work more on your video editing.

  • @thoven78 I've actually been doing this for 7 months now. YouTube has had an issue for the past few days that's causing some videos to be out of sync. I've got the file locally, and it's spot on.

  • @thisweekinlinux

OOPS, what happened. I watched this a few days ago and it was all in sync, now it's out of sync a few seconds.

Not complaining, it's cool, just kinda odd, cause out of sync issues should occur when first uploaded, not like after it's been up a bit. Seems odd and a bit too "random."

  • @KeibearsProperty I don't have a clue at this point.

  • sweeeeet. I never heard of that one. Downloading now :)

  • @Linux4UnMe good luck with it!

  • Must be kinda weird seeing yourself in camera the entire time =P

Anyway, this beats chromium os by a long shot! I kinda like the lack of a desktop, I never look at mine much anway =P

  • @Fennecfox10 it was a little at first, but after doing this for 7 months, it's not too bad. :P

  • the thing that i didnt understand is if i need to be notified to get the 1.0? because in his web they have the pre release version 0.9.1 XD

and i click in upgrade in my jolicloud and say Upgrade to Jolicloud 1.0

    Oops, we're done for today.

Please check this page again tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

    lol!

  • @royalfiend :P It's entirely possible they're allowing more people to upgrade to 1.0 now. Good luck with it!

  • @scouser73ubuntu thanks a lot. It's a very fun distro to work with

  • @ZERONiCEhacker714 depends on the netbook. Mine is a little underpowered, and a full gnome desktop is a bit rough on it. Something with LXDE or XFCE would be good, but this would also work.

  • @cjclaxon Yup, I'm on Fedora. :)

    Thanks a lot!

  • Awesome review... Me and friends here in the Philippines are going to check that out... Thank you very much for all the videos that you're sharing... Muchas Gracias Senior...

  • @baternajmbb thanks a lot!

  • Ahhhh I see your running Fedora now rather than ubuntu Karmic. Given redhats contributions to the opensource community I cant say that I fault you. Nice review. Looks pretty neat.

  • @Shakez76 :) Fedora is a very decent distro. I tried to get Arch on the desktop, but had some issues because of my ATI card.

  • Heh, you switched to Fedora 13. Nice.

  • @shinobi815 Yup, and I've been decently pleased so far.

  • looks awesome : )

  • this is linux?

I want to try this OS in a virtual machine, but when I download it ,it was exe,but I need iso, help me please,I want try it...

  • @KuzenkoIvan Indeed it is. From their website, on the download page, there's a Jolicloud Iso link on the left you can click.

  • @thisweekinlinux thanks))

  • also, you're holding up quite well for your age (born 1899), i envy you. :D

on a more serious note, could you please give me a link to the jolicloud gtk theme, or at least tell me its name? i really like it, but wouldn't want to go though dl'ing and installing the whole os to get to it. thanks in advance.

  • @bamdadkhan hm, I guess I didn't give them my birthdate. good thing. :P

From what I can tell, the theme is called Jolicloud. Not sure where you can actually get a copy.

  • @thisweekinlinux thanks, i'll do a more thorough search, and maybe extract the theme from the live image as a last resort. :)

  • look like google os,little bit)

  • @KuzenkoIvan a little. perhaps where Google is going to go. a mix of cloud and local apps.

  • there are two things i really can't stand: 'social' networking (twitter, facefook etc.) and cloud computing. :D at any rate, nice review. :)

  • @bamdadkhan that's the great thing about Linux: if you don't like something, you don't have to use it. :P

  • @thisweekinlinux true, i never said otherwise, and meant no offense. i didn't even say it's a bad distro or something. i was only stating an opinion, that's all; e.g. you can dislike what's on TV, even though you're not forced to watch it.

furthermore, i think these kind of remarks are dangerous, for they can recursively lead to saying 'if you don't like a certain way of life, feel free to die'.

but instead of arguing, i'll take the easy route and quit stating my opinion on your videos. ;)

  • @bamdadkhan nah nah, no offense taken. :P I just meant that if you don't like the way something works with Linux, you can either use something else or fix it to make it work how you like!

You're more than welcome to your opinion, and I'm glad to hear it.

  • @thisweekinlinux it seems the internet is really a place for misunderstandings. i'm glad that's sorted out. and yes, we agree on that, that's why i'm happier every day to use linux/bsd. :)

  • @bamdadkhan agreed entirely. It's so hard to catch the meaning behind what someone types. :)

  • Cool OS for netbooks/tablets. And the video was nice, too :)

  • @LinuxHUN :) thanks a lot

  • Do you think this would work well on a laptop

  • @zikalify I think they have a supported hardware list on their site, but in theory it should. it's just Ubuntu with some tweaks to it.

  • Hmmm... I'm thinking about getting a tablet, as a sales tool, for meetings and presentations, this just might have to go on it.

    Thanks for another great review.

  • @PaulRayIsMe I could see it being awesome on tablets!

  • Very impressive! I really like the 'appliance' look and feel. Non-tech-savvy people would like this a lot I think. It's got all the normal stuff integrated or easily available... and it's not like it's going to be a developer's main machine.

  • @librano agreed entirely. I could see it being awesome for tablets as well. Something very simple, with a decent amount of functionality.

  • yuhuu, i've got it;D since yesterday and it works great!

Thanks for that dammnet great os!

  • @LikeLinux I was really impressed. :)

  • Looks very nice! Youre on Fedora.. Sweet! Great one, Jordan. I hope you will do a Fedora video one day..

  • @UbuntuHelpGuy I am indeed on Fedora. :)

I keep meaning to do a Fedora 13 video, there are just so many other things going on.

  • im posting using the youtube app for joilcloud this OS looks awesome and runs nice in this shitty XDD im ussing a toshiba satellite M105-SP1012!

pd: im tried to use a emesene installing from terminal and it crash XDD

  • @royalfiend awesome! Jolicloud is so much fun.

emesene wouldn't run? weird, but I guess understandable. It looks like they take suggestions for apps to be added to their directory.

  • hey, thanks for the review its looks awsome, im in the market for a net book what would you recomend for a jolicloud machine?

  • @mikewolfel I don't have a lot of experience with newer netbooks. I've got an Asus EeePC 1000HE, and it performs decently with most distros. A bit underpowered though.

I know some newer netbooks are coming with dual core processors and nvidia ion graphics, that would probably be the best way to go.

  • I'll Stick With Meego

Oh! And Another Question how do I install rpm's in meego since it is Fedora based I want Skype LOL

  • @StrangeRandomChannel I believe it's just "sudo rpm -i PACKAGE"

  • Uhhhh Is That Fedora Your Running? GRRRRRR

  • @StrangeRandomChannel Yup, definitely Fedora.

  • Superb review, Jolicloud looks like it have huge potentional, it seems better than Ubuntu Netbook Remix tbh! =)

  • @SmartestViking Thanks!

It's a little weird that it's such an old version of Ubuntu, but I think that just adds to the potential.

  • The UI is kind of ugly, it is like a bad version of iPhone OS

  • @bashmohandes eh, to each his own. it's a very soothing grey color. Not flashy, but it wouldn't be a big deal to make it flashier. It's html5.

  • Hey twil have you tried running this on a 1.6ghz netbook? I mean, I'm eligible for the upgrade but when I had tried earlier versions of jolicloud my netbook was awfully bogged down by the OS.

  • @crunchy3neo I haven't yet, but when I have a little time I'll try to install it on mine.

  • @thisweekinlinux I ended up installing it, and I agree with your review. It's pretty high-quality and fast

(MUCH MUCH Better than the pre-release version)

  • OMGIZZLE FEDORA!!!

I'm a big fedora fan myself. Ubuntu is getting a little too mainstream.

  • @weweboom :) I hadn't intended to end up on Fedora, it just sort of happened, but it's working really well for me.

  • ...its pretty cool,,

  • Ive heard that it could be run online, where you could see the applications you have, and install / remove applications. It also syncs the app through your computers. I see that you are using Fedora in this video. :) I hope to be there at the live show tommorrow (over there I think it already is Sunday) and I can't wait for the Intro to linux terminal Part 2 on Monday (My brother has also subscribed to you "viking350" and he can't wait for the part 2 coming on monday also!) :)

  • @russjr08 I saw something about that, being able to manage your apps through a website, but I haven't found it yet.

I am indeed on Fedora now. Slightly better performance than Ubuntu had.

  • wow, that distro looks very good and very easy to use. it seems that linux and the linux community is really heading in the right direction. they are really doing some great stuff :)

  • @ambrosini89 agreed entirely. One of the big things I think we need is some really nice new interfaces.

  • i will test this OS on a toshiba laptop i will tell you later how it works XD

  • @royalfiend nice, thanks!

  • Sweet! It looks nice. And I'm noticing you're on Fedora 13. ;D

  • @KingHerring indeed I am.

  • i love you twil

  • @MalcolmLC thank you. :)

  • I wish I had a netbook to try this out on. Oh well..

  • i mean if have gimp, photoshop, some kind of word procesor, emesene, video, music and web browser apps i need to have it in my pc, but it looks like a Ipad linux OS

  • @royalfiend I'm not sure if all of those things are available. Photoshop definitely isn't. Gimp might be. Sumo editor is a cloud-based photo editor.

I couldn't agree more about the iPad style linux OS.

  • Off topic, but you should check out SUSE studio. It makes a distro customized based on what you want it to have.

  • @JaxDragon1 I have indeed looked at it. It's been a while though. Perhaps I should give it another look.

  • why is not a desktop OS? i want it for my desktop D:!! or what did you recomend it

  • @royalfiend for me, it wouldn't be a desktop interface, just because it doesn't have all the apps I use regularly. However, if you mainly deal with the web, it's awesome.

  • ZOMG That looks awesome!

  • Wow! This looks spectacular! It's hard to believe it's even a desktop operating system, as the interface resembles a mobile device, as you said.

  • @itsbrad212 I couldn't see using it on a desktop myself, but if your needs are limited, definitely.

  • @thisweekinlinux I like it, but I wouldn't use it personally :P I'm the type of person that has to do *everything* themselves when it comes to an operating system or I feel like I am trusting my computer to somebody else. It gives me the sense of control that I want.

  • OMFG!! its looks awesomeeee i want IT!!!!!!

  • @royalfiend I was incredibly impressed. Not a huge number of apps (Ubuntu default has like 30k apps in it), but it has what most people are going to need for mobile systems.
