  • She's it is very similar to Jolana Disco

  • nice opening pulloff lick !!!

  • Amazing tone, Amazing playing ! :)

  • @rocknroll605 Thanks so much!

  • That's a sweet old ax! Nice playing, too.

  • @TheSanityInspector Thank you...thank you very much!

  • I'm surprised at the thick tone of the Fender amp. What model is it? Super Sonic? And yes, the SG VS. Les Paul is correct. Don't mind the knit pickers.....they have nothing better to do!

  • @grindinglicks Man I miss this guitar! It's the 60 watt model but I'm running an Avatar 2x12 cab and all 3 of the speakers are Hellatone 30's (aged Celestion G12H30 70th Ann)...I love this "rig" too...thanks for watching!

  • @madguitar5 You don't know the history of the SG or the Les Paul, so you should be quiet before you embarrass yourself anymore

  • @Glockenator ur knowledge probably comes from Wikipedia u dork

  • @plytoenail which is funny because the info on wikipedia on this subject is actually correct, therefore if he got his knowledge from there, what he knows is correct...

  • @madguitar5 Gibson honored Les Paul's request, and the new model was named "SG", which stood for 'Solid Guitar'. Even though Les Paul's name was officially deleted in 1961, the SG featured Les Paul nameplates and truss rod covers until the end of 1963.

  • dude back in the day the "SG" was a "Les paul"

  • I agree. Nothing like a 45-year-old piece of mahogany. That's where most of the tone comes from in these old guitars. I don't need a vintage one - I just want a well-made LP-copy that uses 60-year-old woods. I love the old Specials in particular. The old Gibson P-90's were about as perfect as perfect gets. Great for neck-p/u stuff where the PAF might be a bit too-muddy or dark. That's the sound I'm looking for (which is why I like those Gibson hybrid-LP's with the bridge-HB and a neck-P-90).

  • @gangtwanger Great comment and insight! Although I want a real GIbson and not just a guitar built out of old wood...to me at least, I believe it's a marriage of the wood and original finish as well as the old pickups...but I love a Humbucker in the bridge and a P-90 in the neck...I just look for beat up ones that don't have the collectible value but have the sound...I don't even mind a broken headstock as long as it was repaired correctly. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @madguitar5 Don't you know anything about the history of these guitars? Can't you read the headstock where it actually says Les Paul model? I guess not...so learn something here (and if you don't believe me call Gibson or Google it)...the traditional Les Paul shape was discontinued in 1961 due to poor sales and the newly redesigned Les Paul was introduced...but Les didn't like it so the name was changed to SG somewhere in 1963...by 1968 demand for the original shape caused Gibson to reissue it.

  • @greengtrs Haha i lol'ed at what a dumbass madguitar5 was.

  • @greengtrs

Gibson honored Les Paul's request, and the new model was named "SG", which stood for 'Solid Guitar'. Even though Les Paul's name was officially deleted in 1961, the SG featured Les Paul nameplates and truss rod covers until the end of 1963.

  • @jeff666p I've told the story (what seems like) a million times (here on various replies to comments)...if you want the person who posted the comment to know the truth (and see your reply), then you have to reply directly to their comment...you're not telling me anything I don't already know.

  • @greengtrs Yes that is true, but today that model is called "SG Junior". Doesn't matter what the history is, we all know it, the fact is that this guitar is a SG JUNIOR.

Google "SG Junior" and then google "Les Paul Junior" and see what comes out of it :-)

  • @MichaelGaard You are missing the point...I am calling this guitar what it was named (by Gibson) and the difference is several thousand dollars more in value between an "SG" Jr. that says "Les Paul" on it and one that doesn't. This one said Les Paul on it so I named the video accordingly and have to deal with people who feel the need to question me about something Gibson did. Maybe you should try correcting Google or Gibson...maybe re-write the GIbson history books while you're at it ;-)

  • @greengtrs Hehe it's true it was named that at the beginning. And yes, in that sense it's correct to call it a Les Paul Jr. I just read a comment of you correcting someone, and actually you're both right.

    But funny comment ;-)

Really nice playing though!!! And great looking SG/LP/Gibson/Axe guitar.

  • @MichaelGaard Thanks! I think I was a bit too sarcastic (in my answer...sorry...), but I was tired and tire over this issue...I'm not a stickler over specs...if it feels good and sounds good, that's all that really matters to me...thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Hey dude, why was your Gibson SG buzzing ???? Great Video btw

  • @bryansouza Thanks! P-90's are single coil pickups...big fat single coil pickups!

  • @bryansouza the camera is not so good the guitar got no buzz

  • @SuperDsffdsf Oh, ok. :)

  • That's the sound right there. P90s rule. That guitar is all sorts of awesome.

  • @giantrobot9000 Thanks! I miss this guitar dearly...

  • @Guitarvirtuoso666

aha - thanks for the reality check -

Just listening to a Badfinger vid, and both guitarists used SGs - and of course, a perfect pure guitar tone for all their songs

The gibson basses had a nice tone too, Glen Cornick with J Tull produced some lovely deep full tones with EBL and thunderbird bass - I considered buying a Gibson hollowbody bass and didn't, but I regret it - the sweetest richest tone I ever heard -

    OK, play on, & cheers

  • sounds nice

  • looks like a 1970 sg

  • SupernalOne, yes not only does Gibson divert all their best wood AWAY from regular production guitars to make 'Custom Shop' guitars, they resort to downright cheapening strategies like drilling 'weight relief' holes into guitars like the Les Paul Standard.

So now, you get a brand-new COSTLY Gibson with denser mahogany that has no tone, and the neck is too heavy for the (weight-relieved) body.

But I've seen some nice early-SG reissues from the CS. Gibson know it's a captive markup - er, market!

  • why can't/doesn't Gibson and/or Epiphone just duplicate the old, successful formula for guitar making? Or do they and charge arm + leg for the result?

  • @SupernalOne Oh they can...they just charge a fortune for them and make them in limited batches to keep the demand and price up...usually only via a Gibson Custom Shop offering...usually in limited quantities...they can be great...but I'll take a real/old/beat-up (but still playable) guitar any day...probably costs about the same these days and you get history/vibe with the used one...not to mention investment value...

    Thanks for watching!

  • @greengtrs

Fender and Gibson screwed themselves royally when they went into the "custom" market rather than sticking with their mainstay standard models. The QC of all of their products became suspect because they were trying to cover all bases rather than putting out real guitars.

Weren't guitar techs supposed to do mods on guitars after you bought them? I do my own. I don't like the upgraded trems or pups companies are sticking on their guitars. PRS is lost in it.

  • @greengtrs people should invest in guitars not stocks

  • @SupernalOne

Always keep in mind that demand has risen over the years and that Gibson now works under a much greater stress then back in the days. Handcrafted ultra precision on the standard models isn't possible anymore for such a big company, although sometimes the guitars are really bad..

Also keep in mind that guitars do get better by age, it has to do with the woods... It's normal that older guitars play and sound better:)

  • I love it. I also want to kill u for it. Ehh, my flaud

  • It sounds absolutely stunning. What a beautiful guitar.

    Faved

    Robin :o)

  • This is one of the few Gibsons I would actually buy. Damn! I wish I had one

  • i had an epi sg junior and sold it. pretty sad that i did that. i'm jealous. but i did get an epi les paul junior soon after and modded it and it sounds awesome.

    good vid. you sound good

  • Hey

What is the best sounding P90:

    1. Dogear like yours?

    2. Soapbar?

    Thank you all.

  • Lovely sounding guitar! I've always been addicted to early single P90 Gibsons. I play my '62 SG Junior at all my gigs for certain songs, for others I use my '68 strat. Both are in my uploaded videos of live gigs. I hope you will still have one to play after you sell that one? I guess, if you deal in vintage guitars, you will always have one to play!

  • I'd kill for a vintage SG

  • thats the original les paul but les paul said he didnt want his name on it so they changed

  • @thebuckshot1 It's not the original Les Paul. They had the standard, then this came out.

  • best guitar in existance

  • i have the same exact guitar... got it for xmas last year, best one so far lol.... love it too lol

  • That's my guitar! The first decent electric I ever owned was an SG Jr almost like this one - think it was a '64 or '65. Slightly different pickguard, and it had a simple tremolo bridge. Cost $150 new at the time. One of the greatest guitars I ever owned. I wish I had never let it go, and not just because they are worth big bux now.

  • 100% pure tone monster!

  • What are you playing at 0:25?

  • these pop up ads are getting on my tits, nice guitar.

  • @steptoesaunt Amen to that

  • See my answer to the original post...but click on them (the ones on my videos at least)...lots!

  • click on them (especially mine...over and over...I make about 1 cent each time you do...tell all your friends...help me make a living at this...I've got 2 little kids who need to eat and every little bit helps)!

  • This sounds absolutely great

  • It felt great too...this is one of my top 10 regrets (guitar related at least) as far as great ones that I've let go over the last 35 years.

  • @greengtrs

why man why? not only is there something unbelievably badass about a single pickup guitar. its also an SG shaped p90 guitar, there is honestly nothing in existence that is more badass. if clint eastwoods man with no name played a gutiar, hed play that fucking guitar.

  • @greengtrs What are the full ten? I'd like to hear 'em!

  • beautiful guitar

  • I used to go see a band where the guitar player kept one of these for doing "cinamon girl" by Neil Young, you can just here that tone coming out here.

  • I keep telling people it's a les paul, but everyone always argues it's an SG... well, it turns out Gibso did finally agree to call them SG's after the first year. Mr. Les Paul was having a hard time with the double cutaway.

  • @ratso11 yepp like i said its a 62 gibson les paul jr.... i got my serial code and everything :)

  • sweet stuff my man, I have the same guitar, dont know what year it is though because the owner before me refinished it and now it doesnt have a ser, number, im pissed ha ha wish i still had that sweet cherry colour

  • Hey if it's a refin already, then there's no harm in refinishing it again...and maybe you will uncover the serial #. The dates or codes on the pots can also give you an idea of the date. Does it say Les Paul on it? If so that gives you a range of '61 - '63. I wish I still had this guitar...

  • that first chord you played sounded like that 70s show

  • Never thought about that but I guess it does...that's where my influences are mostly from....the 70's...not the show...but the era...the show was pretty cool too...

  • Great sounds man, beautiful guitar.

  • ya i have the same exact one its sweet annyone know what the selling price of them are haha

  • Man, my g-pa gave me his SG when i turned 18!! its exactly like that except mines a 64, so unfortunately its not an LP Jr, but an SG Jr.. i read some previous comments and im sorry to hear what happened and im sorry you had to sell the guitar, but youre right, you were blessed enough to have this beast pass thru your hands! its the best 5lb guitar i will ever play!

  • I think the saying goes " a rose is still a rose by any other name"...these are amazing guitars...I just had an Epiphone Olympic from 1960 which WAS a Gibson Melody Maker...except for name...it was built in the same factory by the same people with the same materials (just like yours). Thanks for watching and enjoy that guitar...keep it forever if you can!

  • great playing mate, that SG would be pretty rare yes?

  • Thanks...and yes...it is relatively rare...but almost 2395 were made in 1962 and 2151 in '61...by 63 they were supposed to be called SG Juniors but they would have still had parts with Les Paul on them that they would use up. Thanks for watching!

  • For one, the guitar is plugged straight into the amp and there are no effects, not even reverb,,,just tube amp...read the description...and I've listened to those albums hundreds of times...but I'm not into copying other people and trying to get their sound...this is what I was inspired to play that day...and I'm sorry that my playing and style on this particular video offends your musical sensibilities or snobbery. Why don't you post a video response of you playing here...show what you "know".

  • i'll make a bet with you, if you get tired of that guitar you have to give it to me. xD

  • I sold this one a long time ago...and I still miss it...but I was blessed to at least have it pass through my hands.

  • you should die for selling a guitar like that!!!!

just kidding, but, how could you sell it?!

  • Well this is what I do to put food on the table for me and my kids (I'm a single dad with none of the court ordered child support I'm supposed to be getting...men go to jail for that kind of thing...). But if I could have kept it I would have...it was just not in the cards for me to keep it then. But to answer your question...I let it go out of necessity...to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table...which is more important.

  • oh sorry, i didn't know that

  • It's all good. God blesses us in funny ways...I had to sell off almost my entire collection (of what was left that my ex didn't steal) to pay for the divorce and to make ends meet and that is when God gave me the courage to go ahead with this business which I had thought about...now I get to play more cool guitars than I ever have...stores just don't generally get to pick and choose like I do...and they (most big ones anyways) sell bad ones without thinking twice...I really love what I do now.

  • Aleluya

  • no way, you run your own music store?

  • Yes...or at least (God willing) the very humble beginnings of one...I've been doing this for about 2 1/2 years now and it's poverty level after all is said and done, but at least I am my own boss (and can say Merry Christmas to my customers and not just the newer and more "politically correct" Happy Holidays).

Please think of me when you are looking for your next guitar, etc.

    Thanks for watching!

    God bless!

  • yeah man, keep rocking!

    Peace

  • where is your store

  • Very nice. I just got back my old 62'/63' Junior I sold to my brother 25 years ago. A little worse for wear and tear(he got his degree from Berkely in Boston with it) but it has held up well and no breaks or cracks. They sound great don't they? Very resonant guitar.

  • I just got my own 65ish Melody Maker back yesterday...I love simple old Mahogany Gibson's!

  • I have a 61' Melody Maker as well, the guitar has been heavily modified but sounds great. It has a nice full size neck but isn't to thick. Falls into your hand. That old wood DOES sound beautiful. One of my all time fave guitars. I have an old 64' Epi Olympic too, has one pickup and resonates like a piano. Sigh, going to play now....

  • Wow, look at that nut, now that's how tell it's bone

  • wow

  • i love the sound! I use Daddrios nickel strings (not plated) hears agoI used to use London Sound but they are no longer available. Use Pure nickel strings, pickups love em.

  • too much distortion and random echords

  • That's what I felt like on that particular day in May, 2008. Feel free to play whatever chords you like with as much distortion as you like too! Me...I don't really care...I just play...I try not to think about it too much anymore...just whatever comes to mind at any given time...like I say in my tags...whateverIfeellikeplaying...

With a name like Shredster3000, I would think you would be more forgiving of echords and distortion...and these guitars are not really great for clean sounds anyways.

  • little strings have no dynamics this guitar should have good strings but then again with this type of sound it really does not matter

  • I may not have given this guitar the best demo regarding dynamics (just my mood that day I guess), but that is a function of the player and his hands and control, not the gauge of strings...and you should be able to take a good tube amp, set it so that on 10 (on the guitar/playing hard) you get a high gain sound and them be able to use dynamics and control to go all the way back to almost totally clean without switching channels. I used to use heavier strings until I checked my ego and listened.

  • I use Dean Markley Blue Steel strings... their great for 1 gig, but after that they wear out very fast.

  • thats all you need ... why would you want them to last longer than that? strings were not supposed to last a long time (though thats changed now) this new coated crap sucks... stick with slinkys every gig and just spend 5 bucks and get a new set

  • very true.

i tryed some coated slinkys on my tele

broke after 2 days (not even giging).they fucking nearly gashed my hand open when the top E went!!!

so i thought "fuck it" and learned the harp.... sort off

  • dude i would use ernie ball strings they sound beautiful on sgs give .11 guage they sound nice

  • I love puppies that talk shit. Hell , I eat that shit up. The 62" les paul jr. is probably the most rockin guitar ever made. I have been playing one on stage for 35 years. save your money bitches!!

  • I own one of these 62 les paul jr's , It paid my way through college 76'-80' you couldn't pry it from my hands if you tried. Still playing in bands in Frisco with it today. Yes...these guitars rock like a motherfucker. Save your money bitches!

  • Aw, man that's a sick guitar. I don't even wanna know what it sold for...

  • Yeah it was! I'm still sorry I let that one go...

  • great tone, cool jam!

  • Thanks!

  • I don't know if you are kidding here or not, but no...this is what was called a Les Paul Junior for a few years...The original Les Paul model came out in 1952 and that's the traditional shape...He (Les Paul) didn't like the SG shape from what I've read.

  • yeah the sg had the les paul embossed on the head for a fair few months before they took it off, i bet their pretty expensive and rare to get

  • your best guitar!!!!!

  • It's up there...it's one of my top 10 regrets as far as all the guitars I've let go of over the past 2 years.

  • Yep,my dad has one of these, sweet guitar! Ive gotten to play it one or twice. 5/5 Piece of art.

  • Wow, everything about this video is great..Your amp, your guitar, and you playing...thanks...this really helped me decide on a fender supersonic...Question though, how durable is a Supersonic?

  • I thought I answered this one...maybe it didn't "take"...I don't do too much gigging (but I have done a little with it), and I haven't had to do anything to it at all yet and I bought it used! Thanks for the compliments!

  • Cool...I really dig the amp and I think I might get one...Thanks...

  • must find one of those that looks awesome.

  • nice, but its not a les paul its an sg melody maker

  • Go do some research...it's exactly what I said it is...i've had "SG" Melody Makers as well...aside from the fact that it actually says Les Paul Junior on the headstock (I know the video is not really clear enough to see, but it's there), the pickguard is a giveaway...but thanks for watching anyways!

  • Are you sure you know what you are talking about???? The guitar is clearly an early 60s "LES PAUL JUNIOR". That is what it was called back then, before they called it an SG.

  • I can see why Tim Sult uses one of these, they are the only guitars he needs on stage.

  • nobody could understand what id give 4 a guitar like this

  • the paper under your B string dont mute a little bit the string? i bought a jay turser sg standard replica and the big E string was too dep and always making a buzz when i play open, i dont repair but i choosed to fit a little piece of foil in the cavity.

  • Yes, the paper can mute the B string, but that is if it is an open B. If the B string is fretted, then the paper on B slot will have no effect.

  • that kind of repair need too much precision... i hate when a string is too deep in the cavity. we always need to use open strings.

  • I haven't done it yet myself but I've heard it's not all that hard of a repair to fill in a nut slot...you will need the special files and have to get it filed just right when you're done.

  • u a vintage guitar fan? me to i got a gibson les paul junior

  • me 3 i have a les paul special

  • how many guitars are you goin on now my friend? love to hear from you

  • how much?

  • It's long gone...

  • Man, you're going to sell that?? What a tone machine! Sounds fantastic

  • I have so many regrets when it comes to guitars that have passed through my hands...this one especially...oh well, at least I got to play it for a little bit...the kicker is that I practically gave it away. :(

  • thats so funny that it was called the les paul when it first came out cuz i have never even seen les paul hold an sg

  • He made them change the name because he didn't like it...it just took a few years to get done.

  • you played a song by kiss?

  • lol...not knowingly...where was it and maybe I can tell you what influenced me...probably more likely UFO though.

  • i like ufo too but at 0:54 and 1:29 it sound like a music of kiss.

  • sounds like ''in and out of love'' by bon jovi

  • yeah, sounds like god of thunder.

  • Anyone who owns a Gibson SG or a Gibson Les Paul should know the history.

and the fact that when the SG shape was first released, it was released as "the new les paul model". it was called a les paul for about 2 years before the SG name was finally used.

    Nice guitar :)

  • i love your tone!!!

  • I've forgotten more about guitars than you will probably ever know. Look at the headstock and tell me what it says there...Les Paul Junior...that means the name of this guitar is Les Paul Jr...I put SG in the title for fans of the shape who didn't know any better (you...).

  • srry i wasn't born back then

im sorry for calling you a dumbass im just a douche kid :]

  • yeah ! he ROCKS! and hes forgotton more about music than youll ever know (and guitars) ROCK ON !! Plus ,hes rite, your WRONG about the "sg" thing :they called em les pauls back in the day ........before you was ever even THOUGHT of (now we havta think of you NOW (OIY VEY) bye

  • You're right nothing sounds like old wood

  • Sweet!

  • great sound!!!

  • very nice!

  • Cool.great video like always.hmm i noticed.

    D'addarios must be your

    favorite or "lucky" strings.

    [=

    just kidding.

    nicely done.
