With the whole East Coast bias, I'm actually thinking if NBC would even dare to feature a real West Coast team in the winter classic or on a reg. broadcast. i.e. The Ducks/Kings/Canucks/Avs/Oilers­/Flames, heck, anyone in the western conference not in the Central Division!

It's ridiculous really. Of course, everyone wants to see Bruins Habs. I think they did it for a few reasons, the most important being... if they played Montreal, then whatever US network plays it (I think ABC) will only get money from American markets. Pretty sure they don't get ABC in Canada. So, instead of working out some kind of deal with a Canadian network, they are playing Philly, another US team with not much rivalry with the Bruins.

your right about televising the game in canada but way back in the day bruins flyers did have a huge rivalry. not as big as bruins habs but it was known to get very nasty

@crushblade I think the reason why they had the Flyers instead of the Canadiens in the Winter Classic was because Montreal had played in an outdoor game against the Oilers. It wasnt called the Winter Classic though. I guess there trying to let every team have a piece of the pie.

@crushblade NBC doesn't broadcast in Canada so if they picked a Canadian team they would lose an entire market. The picked Philly b/c it's a huge market, doesn't have a college football team to steal New Year's Day viewers, and because they were saving Washington to use this year. It's dumb as hell though. Montreal was the obvious choice, but you'll never see a Canadian team in the Winter Classic until the TV contract changes. That's why Buffalo was picked b/c they're so close to Canada.

@crushblade I think I saw something about TV terms, so people in Canada can't see it. (If you go to iTunes US, and buy the video copy of the game, it'll give you the CBC Canada version, and it is part of one of their non-live hockey programs - they must've stole the NBC copy live and broadcasted it under their name, or recorded it themselves @ Fenway and announce then air it another time. Maybe the Winter Classic is our edition of Canada's Heritage Classic. Continued in Next Comment

@crushblade The Winter has US teams, Heritage has Canada teams. Eventually, the Heritage will merge with the Winter, and be called the Winter Classic, so teams from both countries can be in one WC. I think this will happen soon, since in NHL 2K11 for iPad, you can have a Winter Classic with your choice of all 30 teams. So, on that iPad game, you can play a B's-Habs WC.
