Lukani -one of the gems of the "the Golden Era of Congolese music" stretching from the 1940s to the early 1990s. I remember growing up in Racecourse Estate Kariakor Nairobi in the 70s and early 80s on this great musical diet!
I was in Form One when this number was among the Top Ten (by Eddy Fondo of Voice of Kenya, (VoK) now KBC. The song was done by Verckys of L'Orch. Veve
This guy Verckys Kiamuangana is quite a legend! He had an unerring ear for quality evidenced by his tireless work in bringing in the new lingala 70's sound. In 1974 music legend James Brown, on his visit to Zaire to perform at the Muhammad Ali-George Foreman fight, dubbed Verckys Kiamuangana as "Mister Dynamite"!

He is Verckys Kiamuangana Mateta. He and Sam Mangwana are two different people! Kiamuangana was born in 1944 in Kisantu, Congo. In 1969 he left Franco's TPOK Jazz to form his own band Orchestre Veve. In 1972 some of his band members left to form Orchestre Sosoliso Trio Madjesi. He recruited Pepe Kalle. At age 25 Kiamuangana established his own studio in Kinshasa going on to create and produce great bands such as Orch Lipua Lipua, Orch Kiam, Orch Les Kamale, Zaiko Langa Langa, Kofi Olomide.
This song is by Orchestre Veve (one of Verckys' assets). Sam Mangwana has nothing to do with this song. At the time of this song, Sam M. was probably working for Rochereau or Franco.
Sam Anyuru thanks brother for this music. I had too very nice girl friends at the time of this music, and brings back all the good memories. How can we recapture this life again, or should we move on? Lovely memories.
I 've been looking for "Enguduka" for a long while.
Nobody in my surroundings seems to have the hit. I'll keep on looking and when I get it, I'll post it. It took me 14 yrs to bump into someone with "Lukani"
Veve was a band fronted by Verkys Kiamwangwana, who also supported other groups like Lipua Lipua, Kiam, etc. Lukani, to the best of my knowledge, was composed by Tusevos, who was member of Veve and the same group played the song. It is distictly Veve with not an iota of Lipua Lipua in it. All one has to do is listen to Veve songs and compare them to Lipua Lipua songs: there is a huge difference.
Sorry Sam, you keep saying it's Lipua Lipua but you are very wrong. This is a Veve song through and through. I had the actual 45 when it came out. Plus the sax and vocals are a Veve trademark. Thanks for posting it.
Thank you Sam Anyuru for this post. I love the music even though I don`t understand the Congolese language. The saxophone players were wonderful. I think the Congolese musicians are the best guitarists in Africa.

One of the best songs from Congo enjoyed universally. You don't need to understand the language to appreciate the quality of this song.

This song was legendary in the Congo's buildup to African music domination/
Every aspect of the song was artfully executed.

This song was by Orchestre Veve, not Lipua Lipua.

I agree 100% with Darubini2 that Lukani is a song by Veve. I doubt if Lipua Lipua has anything to do with Lukani.
By the way Sam, do you have "Engunduka Mawa" or something like that? I don't know who played it.
